Interesting Resolution Of Yarn

Exciting News!

You are looking at one of the winners of the New Mexico Department of Cultural Affairs 2025 Poetry Contest! My entry can be found here: https://nmculture.org/poetry/chama-locomotive (it had to be inspired by the art) There will be an in-person reading in April, date/time TBD. So grateful and happy for this opportunity.

Ain't What They Used To Be

Six months. That's how long this Hanes long-sleeved t-shirt has lasted before getting a hole in the underarm seam in the wash somehow. And I haven't worn it that often, because that's from September to March. What a piece of crap. Hanes. How disappointing.

Zine now open for submissions

Rogue's Elixir now open for submissions for issue 8! Prose, poetry or art due to harper.author@protonmail.com by March 28th. The theme for this issue, to be interpreted however you wish, is "Rabbit Hole". Literal, metaphorical, avant garde, etc., the choice is up to you. Zine is in B&W, so any color artwork will be converted to grayscale. payment is only that the contributors will be provided the PDF files of the finished zine for their own copy and a %50 off discount code for the ko-fi listing they can share. please address all questions to that email.

Other issues and other zines at the shop over on ko-fi.com/thorncake/shop

Treated Like I'm Stupid Gets Old

Boycotts and power

It felt good to participate in yesterday's economic boycott. All we bought was lunch at a small local restaurant and used cash. (which felt weird itself these days.) I commented on a BlueSky post about the boycott, "No-Buy-Fri sounds good to me going forward." I'm amused that my spontaneous term seems to be liked a lot rather quickly and even reposted. So, yeah, I can do that. NO-BUY-FRI!

Being disabled, I do rely on online shopping for quite a few items. But I've started A) not buying spontaneously so often, B) look elsewhere first for what I need rather than just going to Amazon, and C) looking up what I can get locally. The biggest thing I've found is a good 90% of things are not honestly anything I really need to have that fast. That 2-day or less delivery really was addictive. But I really can do without, and I'm lucky I have people to help if I did. I absolutely am not going to blast anyone else who may choose otherwise, because some people don't live somewhere that a lot of retail options are available. We do what we can.

Still Busy

Goodness gracious. Just over 300 accounts deleted and getting close to done. This is crazy! On the other hand, it does feel really good, like actual spring cleaning. Everything from surveys to shopping to brand newsletters, so much is just not clogging inboxes anymore. The hardest part will be cutting down on Amazon. I can't get rid of it completely for a few necessities on there not available locally, but I can certainly reduce it a LOT. You just don't realize how ubiquitous online signups are for for every little thing until you start cleaning it all up.

Tomorrow we get to go to Costco. Extremely useful and saves money on several things, but it's a very physically exhausting trip for me every time. I'll be looking to see if there are any other things I can get there that I might normally get on Amazon. I'd far rather give money to a company that gives a shit about its employees. BTW, if you ever see the Realgoods brand of frozen chicken tender, they are freaking delicious in an air fryer, I'm just saying. Nom Nom.

New Issue of Zine is Out

The latest issue of Rogue's Elixir, my zine is finally out! First one of this year. Also, use code BHM to get everything in the store for free this month. ko-fi.com/thorncake

Get anything in my zine shop for free this month!

Decided to throw a discount code into the Ko-Fi shop where I have my zines. Use BHM for 100% off, yes, that's 100%, through the end of February. They're all digital, so you'll have to print it, but instructions are easy. Check it out! ko-fi.com/thorncake/link/BHM

Writing

I've been getting some writing done; it feels good. Poems submitted to various places, a few revised, and editing of a flash fiction. I set Outlook (which I never use) to be a visual calendar for me to see when various submission windows are open. We'll see how that goes. There is no budget for task or calendar apps or programs, so hopefully this will help. I can't use my Google calendar as it's full of personal and health stuff and I don't want the two to cross. Now the main work is just finding places to submit stuff so I can block out the dates as "open".

Also, I've less than successfully been trying to to freak out about all the political things happening and how they could destroy my life. My therapist is giving my money's worth, ha ha. I did decide to create a "How to Protest Safely" free little zine and will see about putting it out in Spanish as well. The 8th issue of Rogue's Elixir is also coming out soon. Someone's just finishing up his short story for it. I've got the interior and cover art ready to go.

Words are powerful. Use them.

Photos now working!

Thanks to the assistance of Kristi H. here on Friendica, my post photos are now working. I've gone back to make sure the alt text is added to each, and I know how to going forward. So glad when I can make things accessible to more people. Hopefully I can pass on some help to someone soon.

Problem seeing photos here

OK, why am I not seeing the photos I put in my posts, actually IN my posts? The code is here in the post, but they're all under the Photos tab. Can anyone tell me what I need to do to make them show up in the post itself?
Thanks!
in reply to Kristi H.

You didn't by any chance tick the box under Settings > Display > Content/Layout > Hide pictures with empty alternative text?

When you upload and attach an image to a post on Friendica there is no nice interface for adding alt-text like there is on Mastodon. You have to manually add it to the BBcode:

[img=https://friendica.world/photo/preview/1024/9320632]Alt text description goes here.[/img]

If you upload the photos to an album you can edit the photo there and anything you put in the "Caption" field will become the alt-text for that image when you attach it to a post in the future.

in reply to Kristi H.

Well, butter my butt and call me a biscuit. I did have that checked, I thought it meant OTHER PEOPLE's stuff to be hidden. That explains why I was going over and adding the captions in the album after posting. I didn't realize that you have to put it directly in the URL here. I will be doing that from now on. Thank you so much for helping me figure this out, because I certainly don't want to post without ALT! I appreciate your assistance!

A Few Hobbies and Likes

This is by no means comprehensive, but here are some of my interests. Drawing, writing, reading, movies, art shows, readings, supporting my community arts center, Little Libraries, historical costuming, gadgets, D&D 5e (I'm on both Roll20 and D&DBeyond), most music except for metal, jazz, and rap with a particular fondness for Irish folk music, crochet, fountain pens, embroidery, scifi/fantasy, video games, board games, foods of many cultures, tea, cats, opossums, and I write and publish zines. There's more, but just trying to think of it all would take a while. I don't get out a lot because I'm disabled, but I have a rich online life and have made some really good connections so far.

Greetings, everyone!

It appears we have at least one hobby in common. I love electronics. I have a few Arduino and ESP-32 project kits and I love playing with robotics.

I am very new to the Fediverse though seeing you can categorize your posts I suppose blogging would not be as bad as on fb? I usually use my personal website for my blogging and then share the blogs to social media.

By the way if you are interested freehosting.com/ is the only truly free host I have found. They do not inject ads into your content either. I have paid a one time fee for a few extra addons to my account though other than the SSL (which I would recommend to everyone) you may not need one.

in reply to Unus Nemo

Good to know should I need that in the future, thank you. I don't really have a webpage and am trying to limit the new things I sign up for, ha ha. I've never really built electronics, but I'm capable of putting together a computer without help. But I do find gadgets and such fascinating. Nice to meet you!
