I’m not clear why Trump would care about releasing the Epstein Files:

1. Is he in the files? Yes, they’ve said so.

2. Did he go to Epstein’s island? In all probability. The White House has acknowledged him being on Epstein’s plane.

3. Is he a rapist? Again, yes. He has been accused by multiple women and found liable in court.

4. Is he attracted to underage women? Again, yes. He has admitted as much, multiple times.

What else is in there?

Extortion. Blackmail. Forcing politicians to bend to your will or else the Epstein files are released. I think the sole reason for the Alaska nonsense with Putin was to hand his mentor the evidence of his rapes. There are a lot of powerful people who want this kept under wraps, and that's precisely what empowers a lifelong racketeer.

Every time a Republican demands the release the Epstein files & then suddenly backs down, it seems like a game of Clue (or Cluedo, I suppose).

I always end up wondering which "card" the person was shown that made them back down. You know, which person did they find out was implicated that made them decide "oh. It would suck for me if that got out"?

Kyle is playing the works of the great songwriters and songs they inspired him to write, along with the tangents, rants and non sequiturs you've tolerated since 2007. Sharing this post kills fascists!

When Republicans in the 1990s validated and legitimized psychopaths at OK City, Waco, Ruby Ridge, and other places, just to vilify Democrats for rural Americans ("I'm not condoning their actions, but I understand their frustration with Clinton and his RADICAL agenda!"), what they ended up doing was enshrining these anti-American ideals into the core of their political party. theguardian.com/us-news/2025/a…

If you want to understand why Trump and his henchmen are attacking the independence of federal agencies, especially the Office of Special Counsel, you may find this, by me, helpful. heidi-says.ghost.io/a-closer-l…

If anyone's been looking to get rid of American social media or just looking for a good Canadian Pixelfed server, pixelfed.ca just launched.

It's run by Fedecan, a registered Canadian non-profit.

They also run lemmy.ca and I can personally vouch for the team being both great admins and terrific people.

Oh, no! Director David Lynch has died!
He is a major reason for my lifelong love of movies, after I saw Elephant Man as a kid. A decade later, while a film student, I hustled my way into a job as a PA on the New Orleans on-location set of Wild At Heart. There I had the dream job of fetching Mr. Lynch his fruit smoothies and driving Nick Cage from his hotel to the set. Watching Lynch work on set and direct his actors was a huge privilege. He was incredibly improvisational, sometimes shooting the scene multiple times, recruiting odd bystanders and inserting them into the set.
I only knew him for a minute, a long time ago, but I am really going to miss knowing David Lynch is in the world.

I won’t claim to be his biggest fan (and that’s on me) but as a filmmaker who rigidly stuck to his own vision, eschewed popularity and became one of cinema’s greatest auteurs in spite of that and who never seemed to put out anything half-arsed, he’ll always have my respect. The industry has lost one of its most creative minds and his loss will be felt by many. #RIPDavidLynch

welcome to 2025, a harbinger of things to come

it's not humorous, a #cybertruck burning in front of a #trump tower, because it's being investigated as #terrorism- there was an explosion, 1 dead and 7 wounded. no one knows if the explosion was generated by the cyberstuck or by a bomb, as of yet

however, this reaction from a witness: "It was like a boom-boom-boom, and it almost sounded like a rolling garbage dumpster"

Another slimeball location-data company sells your doctor visits to the police. Grotesque and dangerous contempt for privacy -- and women in red states will surely become prime targets.

Burn this industry to the ground, I'd say, but Congress would have to act, and Congress is hostile to your privacy.

Fine reporting, as usual, from @404mediaco

it seems though this is how the US government ends up accessing private citizen data. It circumvents all the legal restrictions that were put in place to protect privacy. Any company providing private user data to a 3rd party should be prosecuted - in my country we have a Protection of Private Information Act, and those companies would have been prosecuted already.

Avoid toll roads. In fact, just don't use your car because GM and others sell the location data, and license plate readers are everywhere. Don't even take the bus unless you can pay with cash. Of course, don't take a ride share.
And bring a change of clothes and wear a mask, because Ring cameras are ubiquitous.

Scathing.

The final COP29 agreement DOES NOT EVEN MENTION making a transition away from fossil fuels.

Our so-called leaders will *never* do what is needed. They’d rather burn the Earth and boil the oceans than turn away from capitalism.
