I'm on the upper balcony, looking out over The Hague. If you look close, you can see someone else looking out too.
There's lots to see. Beautiful buildings as well as ugly ones, smack in the middle of course.

I was sketching with a select group of urban painters yesterday, in the pub. A warm summer night in The Hague.
Everything is skewed 'n wrong, but that's what tripple beer does to you. And I like it. Fuck perspective!

I designed this book for our dear friend Jeanne. Art and Religion in the Renaissance contains four studies of Piero della Francesca, Lorenzo Ghiberti, and Lorenzo Lotto.
While we were at Jeanne’s, in Italy, I photographed the cover in Florence and later visited Bergamo to marvel at Lotto’s magnificent work. You no longer need to travel to Italy to experience these masterpieces—this book provides everything you need!

For my animated short film Lazy Dog, I am creating simple 3D models of each character, to pose and then trace. Only key poses, to speed up the hand drawn animation. This helps to get difficult perspective right quickly. Even distorted fish eye lens shots become relatively simple to do.
This clip has no audio. Not even music. 😀

I’m gradually becoming quite comfortable wit Linux Ubuntu—something I need, given the many alarming reports we keep hearing about big‑tech companies, including Apple sucking up to 'he who must not be named' recently.
Ubuntu proves to be a fully capable platform for me as both a musician and a filmmaker. And it is not difficult or scary at all. You start by running it from a USB drive and go from there. It's fun!

A lovely evening at the Rosarium in The Hague, sketching with my Urban Sketch buddy Bernhard. Meanwhile, a heron stood beside us, peering over our shoulders with a discerning, art-loving eye.

Yesterday, upon the stair,
I met a man who wasn't there.
He wasn't there again today,
I wish, I wish he'd go away!
This is one of my favorite short, creepy 'n fun stories. I got this poem from the movie Identity (2003).
It turns out this poem has a long history. Check it out:

Some people miss the event functionality of Facebook. I’ve found that Partey.io is a great, free alternative that’s very easy to use. It doesn’t require an account, looks great—and it even has confetti.
Alternatively, there's also an open-source, decentralized event tool that looks great. It may be a bit trickier to set up for the average user but definitely worth checking out, I’d say: mobilizon.org

I would like to know when a post is private or not. So, is this correct?:
When I use '!', the message gets posted directly to that group. It ensures that all group members see the post. If the group is private, the message will be visible only to group members. If the group is public, the message will be visible to everyone (including non-members and possibly search engines).
Is the use of @ or ! the same as choosing 'Limited/Private' on the Permissions-tab?
Thanks,
Kind regards,
Erik

I need to know when a post is private or not. So, is this correct?:
To mention an individual user, I type: @username@instance.tld
To mention a group (a subaccount used as a forum or a community) I type: !groupname@instance.tld
When I use '!', the message gets posted directly to that group. It ensures that all group members see the post. If the group is private, the message will be visible only to group members. If the group is public, the message will be visible to everyone (including non-members and possibly search engines).
Friendica Support just informed me:
Mentioning a user doesn't make the post private. If you want to have a post private, you have to change the permissions of that specific post (set to Limited/Private on the Permissions tab). The only exception are posts to groups.
So, if I mention a private group with an exclamation mark, the post will be visible only to people inside that private group.

Now, I was hoping to add some categories to my group (sub-account)—like in Discord, a list of topics of interest. For example: a culinary group could have the following categories: cooking, baking, sautéing, fermenting, vegetarian, fish.
It seems this is not possible. 'Circles' and 'Channels' aren’t suited for this, right..?

I am new to Friendica and want to learn to create groups. The Friendica wiki tells me:
To create a group, visit your Friendica “Contacts” page and select “Create a new group”.
But there is no such button. I just don't see it. There is only one YouTuber showing how to do it, but his cursor-clicks are off-screen, and the audio is terrible, so it's impossible to make sense of.
Am I the only one experiencing these problems? How can we improve our Friendica skills?

@Erik van Schaaik Not only a new profile. An entire new account.
On Friendica, creating a new group as in a Facebook group means registering a whole new login.
If you want to create such a group, I'd recommend you to do that on another Friendica node than the one you're on right now. For if you had a group on the node that you're on right now, and you wanted to moderate the group, you'd have to
But if your group is on another node, you can stay logged into both at the same time.

Thanks for your much-needed clear explanation of how Friendica groups work.
At the moment, it still seems a bit too cumbersome to me. But I might give it a try when I have more time.
In the meantime, I’m also looking into alternatives like Revolt, where you can create dedicated chat groups: rvlt.gg/qndZXnGD
Other ideas and alternatives on 'groups' are always very welcome. 😀
I'm not good with terminology, so I assume node is the same as server in this case.
You and I are on Friendica, which is part of the Fediverse, and we're both using the server friendica.world.
Wikipedia has an image illustrating how the Fediverse is connected:
Here's the list of public Friendica servers: dir.friendica.social/servers
If you were to look for another server for e.g. a group circle account, you'd choose one of the not-friendica.world ones. 😅
As far as u u can see you don’t need a new login, but a sub account to which you can switch anytime. You can have as many as you like, and they can be anything.
I would even say that Hubzilla’s channels are the same as these sub accounts.

1. Go to “Accounts” in the menu that pops up when you click on your profile picture.
2. Then click on “Manage accounts”. You should end up on youserver.url/settings/delegat…
3. Click “Register an additional account”
4. Fill in the name, nickname, and confirm with your main account password.
Voilà – you have a new account as a sub.account to which you can switch to at any time using the accounts menu.

I'm sorry, @Daniel de Kay , but I don't see an "Accounts" option in the menu that appears when I click my profile picture. Additionally, the URL that's supposed to show where I would end up isn't working.
I must go do some urban painting now (lovely analogue paper and paints!) but I will not give up, and I'll be looking back into this soon.

So, if I've understood it correctly,
a circle-group is basically one "person" that acts as a hub that everyone "in" the "group" shares messages with
so when one tags this "person" (by adding an exclamation mark — ! — in front of the "person"'s name), the "person" then forwards that message to everyone else that it has in "its contacts".
@jalanchee @jupiter_rowland @phle
It’s exactly the analogy used to explain federation. ActivityPub an actor sends notifications to all the inboxes of their followers. Just like email.
And the group is then a mailing list, makes sense.

The dialogues for 'Lazy Dog' are written in rhyme. It adds both a poetic and humorous quality, giving the story a song-like rhythm.
I’ve also jotted down some exciting ideas for the film’s music—more on that once I’ve had a chance to experiment. Ultimately, I hope to collaborate with one of the composers we met at the Third Character Event at Film Fest Gent.
