THE DECLINE OF MASONIC PRINCIPLES BY THE GRAND MASTER OF THE GRAND LODGE OF CHILE.

Freemasonry is a universal institution, whose main principles are set out primarily in Anderson's constitutions and the constitutions and regulations of each Grand Lodge, which obviously must not contradict Anderson's constitutions.

Through study, a Freemason should aspire to "become more thoughtful and self-assured individuals. Inspire and challenge them to practise the fundamental values we celebrate – Integrity, Friendship, Respect, Service – in their private and public lives. To consolidate our reputation as a force for good in our communities and in society at large and as a thriving organisation that people aspire to join." 1

"The virtue and dignity of human beings are exalted, promoting solidarity and social justice, and bridges are built to link thinking, speaking, feeling and acting for the benefit of humanity. It respects the particular religious and political beliefs of each of its members, who are completely free to embrace the beliefs that best contribute to their enlightened conscience. It exalts the virtue of tolerance, and therefore keeps partisan political discussions and all religious sectarianism out of its temples." 2

‘It is a society of men concerned with moral and spiritual values, promoting a lifestyle that unites like-minded men in a worldwide brotherhood that transcends all religious, ethnic, cultural, social and educational differences.’ 3

In short, a Freemason is a person who studies to improve himself, respects the laws of the country where he lives, has high ethical and moral principles and values, and tries to be a useful member of society.

At least, that is what is stated on paper or in the various principles outlined by the grand lodges around the world.

However, sometimes these principles that we Freemasons say we respect or try to imitate are tarnished by people who, while in Freemasonry, forget everything they studied and learned in order to use Freemasonry for their own purposes, which are not in accordance with what they were taught.

GRAND LODGE OF CHILE AND ITS GRAND MASTER SEBASTIAN JANS PEREZ

The particular case of the current leader of Chilean Freemasonry shows how low a man can sink. By failing to respect the Masonic values and principles he was taught throughout his Masonic career, he has strayed from all the principles and values he swore to uphold when he was initiated.

During his term of office, Sebastian Jans Perez has expelled members of the order for not agreeing with his ideas, forced members of the Masonic government to resign, such as Grand Dignitaries, Grand Orator, Grand Secretary, Grand Treasurer, etc., and expelled brothers without the right to a Masonic trial or a proper defence, using the Grand Lodge's council of officers to do so, thereby violating the country's political constitution. 4

How is it possible to expel members of your institution without respecting the principles you swore to uphold? Where is the brotherhood? Equality? And tolerance? Freemasons must respect the laws of the country where they live, yet the highest authority of Chilean Freemasonry openly and constantly violates the Chilean constitution and laws, as if the laws of the country did not apply to him. Perhaps he believes himself to be a Roman Caesar or a Tsar?

Only a few people dare to report their constant violations of rights to a court outside the Grand Lodge. A constant fear of the Grand Master has taken hold within Chilean Freemasonry, where members are led to believe that he is untouchable by earthly laws, as if they lived in a parallel reality where the laws of the country do not affect them and they live by their own laws and regulations.

Even Sebastian Jans Perez himself believes this. in 2024, the accountant of the Grand Lodge of Chile, who was not a Freemason, reported on the critical financial state of the Grand Lodge of Chile, which had to sell a property to recover funds wasted on meals, first-class travel, and the stratospheric salaries of some officials. It is openly commented that a journalist has an excessively high salary. The mere suggestion of lowering salaries in line with the country's reality and stopping the waste of resources was enough to make the Grand Master explode in anger and dismiss him from his position as accountant, with a contract, without paying him compensation or labour rights.

Obviously, the accountant was not a Freemason and knew that the Grand Master was not untouchable, as Chilean Freemasons believe him to be. He brought him down to earth abruptly, knocking him off his pedestal, and sued him for his violated rights and money owed in labour courts. The most terrible thing was the accusation of embezzlement, hidden accounts, improperly issued cheques that were not recorded, money received by the lodges that was not recorded, and the use of virtual personal bank cards, MACH, which belongs to BCI bank. the money comes out of the grand lodge, they charge the personal cards, they make purchases for the GM and his close associates, as is the case with the Grand Chancellor, buying first-class plane tickets, hotels, and others. As things were going badly for Sebastian Jans Perez in that trial, a payment of 20 million Chilean pesos, equivalent to 17,882 euros, was agreed upon, payable in four instalments, as compensation and so that the trial would not continue, without acknowledging the facts of the lawsuit. But of course, the money would not come out of Sebastian Jans Perez's pocket; it comes directly from the funds of the Grand Lodge of Chile. 5 In other words, once again squandering money that is not his, as it belongs to the Chilean lodges.

On the day of the Grand Lodge assembly in 2025, on the last Saturday in June, Sebastian Jans Perez gave an account of his ‘management’ when it was time to give the floor to Grand Treasurer Nelson Nuñez, who presented the Grand Lodge's finances. There was a deathly silence, which was interrupted by a venerable master brother who asked to speak about the accounts. In simple terms, he explained that the accounts did not add up. This brother is an accountant and knew exactly what he was talking about. He noticed errors in many items; the sums, balances, income, and expenses were wrong. To the venerable masters who are not accountants, everything looked fine, but under the scrutiny of an expert, the uncomfortable truths came to light. However, he was unable to finish his presentation, as he was angrily silenced by Sebastián Jans Pérez, who ordered him to sit down. I would like to clarify to the reader that at the assembly of the Grand Lodge of Chile, the venerable masters have the right to speak, to request clarification on certain points, to propose ideas, etc. This right was taken away from the brother who bravely dared to question the accounts of the Grand Lodge of Chile. At the end of the meeting, Sebastián ordered that no record be made in the minutes of the complaint made by the venerable master about the accounts.

If an accountant at the assembly tried to clarify and ask for accountability for poor accounting, and was silenced, perhaps we have a powerful sign that the money is not adding up in the Grand Lodge of Chile, and the venerable masters, who are called upon to supervise, remain silent... Something shady is going on, and no one dares to act, which would worry any master mason from any lodge in the world... except in Chile, of course.

Perhaps he wants to hide the fact that the journalist from the Grand Lodge of Chile, who is his girlfriend, earns 8 million pesos a month, equivalent to 7,153 euros. How can such a salary be justified? When the average salary for a journalist in Chile is 1,400,000 pesos a month, equivalent to 1,253 euros. 6
Perhaps he also wants to hide the fact that he has an advisor on lodge matters, whom he pays 2 million pesos, equivalent to 1,788 euros. Let's be honest, an advisor on lodge matters? Since when would a Grand Master, 33rd degree in the Supreme Council, need an advisor?

BREACH OF MASONIC CONTRACTS

In December 2004, Sebastian Jans Perez signed a contract with the International York Rite 7 to bring degrees higher than the master's degree to Chile. This was difficult because in Chile, the Supreme Council has exclusive rights to teach higher degrees, under penalty of expulsion if a Chilean Freemason participates in any teaching system other than the Supreme Council of the 33rd degree. A monopoly on Masonic teaching?

This is not the case in other grand lodges, where a Mason can choose the higher teaching system that interests them. There are no limitations on teaching. However, the signed contract generated interest among Chilean Masons, which faded when they realised that only Masons belonging to the Lodges of Massachusetts could join. There are only three such lodges in Chile, and the language used in their meetings is English, limiting the admission of Chilean applicants, as the official language of the country is Spanish.

However, although there are Freemasons who belong to both Grand Lodges, the Grand Master ordered the ‘voluntary’ expulsion of those members who belonged to both. I emphasise voluntary, as he forced them to choose between the Grand Lodge of Chile or the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, under penalty of being subjected to a Masonic trial and expelled. Among them was a candidate for Grand Master, Mr Tupper, who was a member of the Supreme Council, 33rd degree, and part of the authorities of that Masonic body. In this way, he is getting rid of candidates who could affect the upcoming elections, in which his friend, the great orator of the Grand Lodge, Mr Ruben Leal Riquelme, is running. In short, he will be able to remain the Grand Master in the shadows.

Only one brother, whose surname is Espinosa, dared to confront him, responding to his request to choose between the two Grand Lodges, a power that the Grand Master does not have under any Masonic regulations or constitution in Chile. This cost him his suspension from Chilean Freemasonry, and he sued the Grand Master in court for violation of constitutional rights, which is awaiting the decision of the court of that country. Perhaps he will lose again, as he has in the last two trials, and will have to compensate him to settle the lawsuit, as he did with the accountant.

There is also the case of Brother Ovalle, who also sued Sebastian Jans Perez in court for violation of rights and unjustified expulsion. It seems that this Grand Master will be known for the number of lawsuits filed against him during his term.

The question that remains is: how many millions more will the Grand Lodge of Chile have to pay out in compensation for these lawsuits? And to reach an agreement so that they do not continue to prosper in the courts, how much will the silence of these brothers cost? Money that will clearly not come out of Sebastián's pocket.

HATRED TOWARDS “FOREIGN” MASONS

These are the masons from foreign lodges in Chile. There are three Grand Lodges in the country that have lodges in Chilean territory: the Grand Lodge of Scotland, the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts and the United Grand Lodge of England. It reached such a point that in his speech at the annual meeting of venerable masters, he attacked them directly, calling them Trinitarians, who devote themselves only to prayer and not to Freemasonry, since in his imagination only the ancient and accepted Scottish rite exists, and all other Masonic rites are inferior or simply should not exist.

The most unusual thing about this speech is that it was not contradicted by the venerable masters; they even openly mocked Chilean Freemasons who are members of both Chilean and foreign lodges, making it clear that there is xenophobia towards their own brothers.

Read carefully the words of the Grand Master 8:

The year ended on 29 December, when we signed a treaty with the International York Rite, allowing it to operate in Chile for Brothers belonging to the Lodges of Massachusetts, with the exclusion of Brothers belonging to the Grand Lodge of Chile. This exclusion stems from the provisions of Article 4.1 of the General Regulations, which specifies the rites that members of the Order may practise, and due to the religious nature of that Rite, which defines itself as ‘Trinitarian’, which is contrary to the constitutional principles of the Grand Lodge of Chile.

Thus, there are Masonic powers that represent a long institutional development, and there are also those that have emerged from recent histories of formation. There are those that boast a high membership in relation to their national population, and others that represent an irrelevant data point in that variable of analysis. There are Masonic powers that excel in teaching, and others where it is practically non-existent, and what prevails is basically fraternity. In short, in any variable, we will always observe that the inequality of attributes is much more predominant than the elements in common.

How clear should candidates be? First, how they think, understand, and view Chilean Freemasonry. Chilean Freemasons do not like ritualistic travesty. Either we are from here or we are from there. These are answers that those who aspire to lead Chilean Freemasonry must have. What will be their position on multi-ritualistic pretensions? What do they think of the territorial invasion of the Freemasons of the Mark? Do they have deep convictions regarding the free-thinking and secular nature of our Order? There are Brothers who wanted to sow Trinitarian Freemasonry in our ranks, who were called upon to choose between praying or reflecting in a space of free thought as dear to us as the Grand Lodge of Chile and the Lodges of its Obedience. Do those who aspire to lead the Order today share this vision? What rite is intended to be used for the Grand Lodge's meetings in the coming years? I have heard that some would be interested in changing the concept of the GADU in our rituals in order to impose their unilateral vision. I recommend that candidates clarify their ideas, because these questions will be on the agenda.

In this part of the speech, the Grand Master states that the Grand Lodge of Chile is atheist, which contradicts the principles of the United Grand Lodge of England towards the lodges recognised by it, because this disruptive and hate-filled speech was not reported by the representatives of the Grand Masters of foreign lodges operating in Chile.

Incredible as it may seem, there are ambassadors from these foreign lodges who have not expressed their discomfort with his speech, nor have they reported the irregularities. It is as if Sebastian Jans Perez has them well silenced through recognition, sumptuous meals, and great honours at meetings, so that they do not report to their respective Grand Masters, or worse, so that they report only what he wants them to.

Thus, the decline of Chilean Freemasonry has been thanks to the efforts of Sebastian Jans Perez. The greatness that Chilean Freemasons once had has fallen. In the past, Chilean Freemasonry was an example for Latin America and the rest of the world, but now it is stuck in a deep hole with no way out in sight.

Perhaps the next Grand Master will be able to guide the Grand Lodge of Chile, one who has a traditionalist vision of Freemasonry itself and respects the various rites and, most importantly, respects its own members, since a Grand Lodge exists thanks to its lodges.

EL DECLIVE DE LOS PRINCIPIOS MASÓNICOS POR PARTE DEL GRAN MAESTRO DE LA GRAN LOGIA DE CHILE.

La masonería es una institución universal, en donde sus principales principios se encuentran plasmados principalmente en las constituciones de Anderson y las constituciones, reglamentos de cada Gran Logia, las cuales evidentemente no deben contradecir a las constituciones de Anderson.

Un masón, por medio del estudio debe aspirar a “convertirse en personas más reflexivas y seguras de sí mismas. Inspirarlos y desafiarlos a practicar los valores fundamentales que celebramos –Integridad, Amistad, Respeto, Servicio– en su vida privada y pública. Para consolidar nuestra reputación como una fuerza para el bien en nuestras comunidades y en la sociedad en general y como una organización próspera a la que la gente aspira a unirse.” 1

“Se exalta la virtud y dignidad del ser humano, promoviendo la solidaridad y la justicia social, y se establecen puentes para enlazar el pensar, el decir, el sentir y el actuar en beneficio de la Humanidad.
Respeta las concepciones religiosas y políticas particulares de cada uno de sus miembros, quienes con absoluta libertad pueden abrazar las creencias que mejor aporten a su conciencia ilustrada. Exalta la virtud de la tolerancia, por lo que aleja de sus templos las discusiones de política partidista y de todo sectarismo religioso.” 2
“Es una sociedad de hombres preocupados por los valores morales y espirituales, que promueve un estilo de vida que une a hombres con ideas afines en una hermandad mundial que trasciende todas las diferencias religiosas, étnicas, culturales, sociales y educativas.” 3

En resumen un masón, es una persona, que estudia para perfeccionarse así mismo, respetuoso de las leyes del país donde vive, de principios y valores, éticos y morales elevados, tratar de ser un miembro útil para la sociedad.

Eso por lo menos en el papel o en los diferentes principios esbozados por las grandes logias alrededor del mundo.

Sin embargo, a veces estos principios que los masones decimos respetar o tratamos de imitar, se ven empañados por personas que estando en la masonería, se olvidan de todo lo que estudiaron y aprendieron para utilizar la masonería para sus fines particulares, los cuales, no tienen concordancia con lo que les fue enseñado.

GRAN LOGIA DE CHILE Y SU GRAN MAESTRO SEBASTIAN JANS PEREZ

El caso en particular del actual regente de la masonería Chilena plasma en la realidad, ¿cuan bajo puede llegar un hombre? al no respetar los valores y principios masónicos que le fueron enseñados a lo largo de su carrera masónica, se ha apartado de todos los principios y valores, que juró respetar en el momento de que fue iniciado.
Sebastian Jans Perez, durante su mandato a expulsado a miembros de la orden por no coincidir con sus ideas, ha hecho renunciar miembros del gobierno de la masonería como son Grandes dignatarios, Gran Orador, Gran secretario, Gran tesorero etc, expulsado hermanos sin derecho a un juicio masónico, o a una debida defensa, utilizando para ello el consejo de oficiales de la Gran Logia, violando con ello la constitución política del país. 4

Como es posible expulsar a miembros de tu institución sin respetar los principios que juraste respetar? Donde queda la fraternidad? La Igualdad? Y la tolerancia? Los masones deben respetar las leyes del país en donde viven, sin embargo la máxima autoridad de la masonería Chilena, viola la constitución y leyes Chilenas abiertamente y de forma constante, como si las leyes del país no lo tocara, ¿tal ves se cree un Cesar romano, un Zar?

Solo un par de personas, se atreve a denunciar sus constantes violaciones de derechos a un tribunal externo a la Gran Logia, se ha instaurado dentro de la masonería chilena, un temor constante a la figura del Gran Maestro, en donde a sus miembros se les hace creer que es una figura intocable por las leyes terrenales, como si vivieran en una realidad paralela en donde las leyes del país no los afecta y viven con sus propias leyes y reglamentos.

Inclusive el mismo Sebastian Jans Perez, cree eso, el año 2024, el contador de la Gran Logia de Chile, él cual no era masón, le hizo un informe sobre el estado critico financiero de la Gran Logia de Chile, debiendo vender una propiedad para recuperar fondos malgastados en comidas, viajes en primera clase, sueldos estratosféricos de algunos funcionarios, se comenta abiertamente que una periodista tiene un sueldo demasiado abultado. El solo hecho de sugerir bajar sueldos acorde a la realidad país, dejar de malgastar los recursos, bastó para que el Gran Maestro explotase en la ira y expulse de su calidad de contador, con contrato, sin pagarle indemnizaciones, ni derechos laborales.

Obviamente que el contador no era masón y sabía que, el Gran Maestro no era intocable, como los masones Chilenos creen que lo es, lo hizo aterrizar abruptamente, bajándolo del Olimpo, y lo demandó por sus derechos violados y dineros adeudados, en tribunales del trabajo y, lo mas terrible, fue la denuncia por prácticamente malversación de fondos, cuentas ocultas, cheque mal emitidos, que no son registrados, dineros recibidos por la logias y que no son registrados, uso de tarjetas personales virtuales bancarias, MACH, la cual es del banco BCI, los dineros salen de la gran logia, cargan las tarjetas personales, hacen compras para el GM y sus cercanos, como es el caso del Gran canciller, comprando pasajes en avión primera clase, hoteles, y otros, como las cosas iban mal para Sebastian Jans Perez en ese juicio, se acordó un pago de 20 millones de pesos chilenos, equivalente a 17.882 euros, pagaderos en 4 cuotas, como indemnización y que el juicio no siguiera, no reconociendo los hechos de la demanda, pero claro, el dinero no saldría del bolsillo de Sebastian Jans Perez, sale directamente de los fondos de la Gran Logia de Chile. 5 Osea, otra vez malgastando dineros que no son suyos, ya que pertenecen a las logias Chilenas.

El día asamblea gran logia 2025 ultimo Sábado de Junio, Sebastian Jans Perez, dio cuenta de su “gestión” al llegar el momento de darle la palabra al Gran tesorero Nelson Nuñez, el cual expuso los dineros de la gran logia, hubo un silencio sepulcral, el cual fue interrumpido por un hermano venerable maestro que, pidió la palabra para referirse a las cuentas, en sencillas palabras expuso que las cuentas no cuadraban, este hermano es contador y sabía perfectamente de lo que hablaba, se dio cuenta de errores en muchos items, las sumas, saldos, ingresos, egresos, estaban mal, a la vista de venerables maestros que no son contadores, todo se veía bien, pero ante el escrutinio de un experto, salen a la luz las verdades incomodas, pero no pudo terminar su exposición, fue callado airadamente por el Sebastián Jans Pérez y le ordenó sentarse. Aclaro al lector, que en la asamblea de la Gran Logia de Chile, los Venerables Maestros tienen derecho a la palabra, para solicitar aclarar ciertos puntos, proponer ideas, etc., este derecho le fue quitado al hermano que se atrevió valientemente a cuestionar las cuentas de la Gran Logia de Chile. Terminada la reunión, Sebastián ordenó, no dejar registro en acta del reclamo hecho por el venerable maestro sobre las cuentas.

Si un contador, en la asamblea trató de aclarar y pedir cuentas por una contabilidad mal hecha, y fue callado, tal vez tengamos una señal potente de que los dineros no están cuadrando en la Gran Logia de Chile, y los venerables maestros, los cuales son los llamados a supervisar se quedan callados…. Algo oscuro está pasando, y nadie se atreve a actuar, lo cual preocuparía a cualquier maestro masón de cualquier logia en el mundo...claro excepto en Chile.

Tal vez quiere ocultar que, la periodista de la Gran Logia de Chile, la cual es su novia, gana 8 millones de pesos mensuales, equivalente a 7.153 euros, ¿como justificar semejante sueldo? Cuando el promedio de sueldo en Chile de un periodista es de 1.400.000 pesos mensuales, equivalente a 1253 euros. 6

Tal vez, también quiere ocultar que tiene un asesor, en asuntos logiales, al cual le paga 2 millones de pesos, equivalente a 1.788 Euros. Seamos sinceros, ¿un cargo de asesor, de asuntos de logia? Desde cuando un Gran maestro, grado 33 en supremo consejo, necesitaría un asesor.

INCUMPLIMIENTO DE CONTRATOS MASÓNICOS

En Diciembre del 2004, Sebastian Jans Perez, firmo un contrato con el Rito de York Internacional 7, para traer a Chile los grados superiores al grado de maestro, fue difícil, porque en Chile, el supremo consejo tiene la exclusividad de la enseñanza de grados superiores, so pena de expulsión si un masón chileno participa de otro sistema de enseñanza que no sea el supremo consejo del grado 33.
¿Monopolio en la enseñanza Masónica?

No así en otras grandes logias, donde un masón, puede escoger el sistema de enseñanza superior que sea de su interés, no existen limitaciones en la enseñanza, sin embargo, dicho contrato firmado que generó interés en masones Chilenos, el cual se fue desvaneciendo, al darse cuenta que solo podían ingresar solo masones pertenecientes a las Logias de Massachusetts. De las cuales existen solo tres en Chile, y su idioma usado en sus reuniones es el Inglés, limitando el ingreso de postulantes Chilenos, ya que su idioma oficial del país es el castellano.

Sin embargo aunque existe masones que pertenecen a ambas grandes logias, el gran maestro ordenó la expulsión “voluntaria” de esos miembros que pertenecían a las dos, aclaro que voluntaria, ya que los obligó a escoger entre gran logia de Chile o gran logia de Massachuttsets, so pena de ser sometidos a un juicio masónico y expulsados, entre ellos a un candidato a Gran Maestro, el Sr. Tupper, el cual era miembro del supremo consejo grado 33, siendo parte de las autoridades de ese cuerpo masónico. De esa manera se va deshaciendo de candidatos que le puedan afectar a las próximas elecciones donde se postula su amigo el gran orador de la gran logia, el Sr. Ruben Leal Riquelme, en pocas palabras, podrá seguir siendo el gran maestro en las sombras. Solo un hermano de apellido Espinosa, se atrevió a enfrentarlo, respondiendo su requerimiento de escoger entre ambas Grandes Logias, facultad que no posee el Gran Maestro, en ningún reglamento o constitución masónica de Chile, tiene esa facultad, eso le costo la suspensión de la masonería Chilena, y demandó al Gran Maestro ante la Corte, por violación de derechos constitucionales, la cual esta a la espera de lo que resuelva la corte de ese país. Tal vez pierda nuevamente como le ha pasado en los dos últimos juicios y, tenga que indemnizarlo para que cese esa demanda, como lo hizo con el contador.
Existe el caso también del hermano Ovalle, el cual también demando a Sebastian Jans Perez, ante la corte, por violación de derechos y expulsión injustificada, al parecer este Gran Maestro va a ser conocido por la cantidad de demandas en su contra durante su mandato.

La duda , que nos va quedando, ¿cuantos millones más deberá desembolsar la Gran logia de Chile, para indemnizar por esos juicios? Y llegar al acuerdo que no sigan prosperando en tribunales, ¿cuanto costará el silencio de esos hermanos? Dineros claramente que, no saldrán del bolsillo de Sebastián.

EL ODIO HACIA LOS MASONES “EXTRANJEROS”

Estos son los masones de logias extranjeras en Chile, en el país existe 3 Grandes Logias que tienen logias en territorio de Chile, Gran Logia de Escocia, Gran Logia de Massachutsetts y Gran Logia Unida de Inglaterra. Llegó hasta tal punto que en su discurso en la reunión anual de venerables maestros, los atacó directamente, tratándolos de trinitarios, que se dedican solo a rezar y no hacer masonería, ya que en su imaginación solo existe el rito escoces antiguo y aceptado, el resto de los ritos masónicos son inferiores o sencillamente no deberían existir.
Lo mas insólito de este discurso, es que, no fue contradecido por los venerables maestros, inclusive se burlaban abiertamente de los masones chilenos que tienen doble militancia en logias chilenas y extranjeras, dejando claro, que hay una xenofobia hacia sus propios hermanos.

El año fue cerrado el 29 de diciembre, ocasión en que firmamos un tratado con Rito de York Internacional, que permitiera su funcionamiento en Chile, para Hermanos pertenecientes a las Logias de Massachussets, con exclusión de Hermanos pertenecientes a la Gran Logia de Chile. Esta exclusión deviene de lo señalado en el Reglamento General, en su artículo 4.1, que señala cuáles son los ritos que pueden practicar los miembros de la Orden, y debido al carácter religioso de ese Rito, que se autodefine como "Trinitario”, lo que se opone a lo especificado en los principios constitucionales de la Gran Logia de Chile.

Así, hay poderes masónicos que representan un largo desarrollo institucional, y también los hay aquellos que devienen de recientes historias de conformación. Los hay aquellos que lucen una membresía alta, en relación a su población nacional, y otros que representan un dato irrelevante en esa variable de análisis. Hay poderes masónicos que destacan en su docencia, y otros donde prácticamente es inexistente, y lo que prima es básicamente la fraternidad. En fin, en cualquier variable, siempre observaremos que la desigualdad de atributos es mucho más predominante que los elementos en común.

Qué claridad deben tener los candidatos? En primer lugar, cómo piensan, entienden y pretenden la Masonería chilena. A los masones chilenos no les gusta el travestismo ritualístico. O somos de aquí o somos de allá. Esas son respuestas que deben tener quienes pretenden liderar a la Masonería chilena. ¿Cuál será su posición frente a la pretensión multirritualística? ¿Qué piensan de la invasión territorial de los Masones de la Marca? ¿Tienen convicciones profundas respecto del carácter librepensador y laico de nuestra Orden? Hay Hermanos que querían sembrar la masonería trinitaria en nuestras filas, que fueron llamados a optar entre si prefieren rezar o reflexionar en un espacio de librepensamiento tan caro como es la Gran Logia de Chile y las Logias de su Obediencia. ¿Comparten esa visión quienes hoy aspiran a dirigir la Orden? ¿Con qué rito se pretende efectuar las Tenidas de la Gran Logia en los próximos años? He escuchado que habría interés en alguno por cambiar el concepto del GADU en nuestros rituales, para imponer su visión unilateral. En esta parte del discurso, el gran maestro manifiesta que, la Gran Logia de Chile es atea, lo cual contradice los principios de la Gran Logia Unida de Inglaterra, hacia las logias reconocidas por esta, porque este discurso tan disruptivo y cargado de odio, no fue notificado por lo representantes de los grandes maestros de logias extranjeras que operan en Chile.
Por increíble que pueda parecer, existen embajadores por parte de esas logias extranjeras, los cuales, no han presentado sus molestias ante su discurso, tampoco informando de las irregularidades, es como si Sebastian Jans Perez, los tiene bien calladitos, por medio de reconocimientos, comidas suntuosas y grandes honores en reuniones, para que ellos no informen a sus respectivos Grandes Maestros, o peor aun, que informen solo lo que él quiere.

Así las cosas, la decadencia de la masonería chilena, a sido gracias a las gestiones de Sebastian Jans Pérez, la grandeza que una vez tuvo los masones chilenos a caído, antiguamente la masonería chilena, era un ejemplo para Hispanoamérica y el resto del mundo, pero ahora, se aloja en un pozo profundo donde no se podrá ver pronto una salida.

Tal vez, el próximo Gran maestro pueda orientar la Gran logia de Chile, uno que tenga una visión tradicionalista en cuanto a la masonería en si, y respete los diversos ritos, y lo más importante, que respete a sus propios miembros, ya que, una Gran Logia existe, gracias a sus logias.

PRINCE HALL, THE FIRST SLAVE MASON

In the United States, Canada, and the Bahamas, as well as in Liberia, there is a type of Freemasonry called Prince Hall, which is unique in that it exclusively groups black Masons. It is estimated that there are some five thousand Prince Hall lodges, which owe their name to the first African-American Mason.

Prince Hall was a slave from the Bahamas who gained his freedom in April 1770. From the Bahamas, where he worked on plantations owned by the landowner William Hall, from whom he took his surname according to the custom of the time, he moved to Boston. Five years later, he was initiated, along with fourteen other black citizens, into the military lodge of one of the British regiments stationed in the city.

The fifteen new Freemasons obtained the three degrees of apprentice, fellow and master at the initiation ceremony held on 6 March 1775. Afterwards, Prince Hall and his companions founded the first lodge composed solely of black Freemasons, the African Lodge. They sought recognition from the Grand Lodge of Massachusetts, which refused. They were recognised in 1787, after the War of Independence had ended, by the Grand Lodge of England, probably in an attempt by British Freemasons to humiliate the Americans after their defeat in the colonies, and as a kind of reward to Prince Hall and the emancipated slaves who remained loyal to London.

Over the years, the African Lodge became a grand lodge or obedience, that is, a federation of lodges, but exclusively made up of black citizens. This grand lodge took the name of Prince Hall, its founder, after his death in 1807. Prince Hall is today an obedience of great importance in the United States. One of its most active members is Reverend Jesse Jackson, a member of the Harmony Lodge in Chicago, Illinois, a peace activist who ran for president of the United States representing the Rainbow Coalition. Other illustrious Prince Hall Freemasons have included Los Angeles Mayor Thomas Bradley and Washington Mayor Marion Barry. Musicians Count Basie, Nat King Cole, Duke Ellington and Lionel Hampton were also members, as was actor Richard Pryor.

Prince Hall Freemasonry has also recruited members from among sports stars, such as boxer and world champion Sugar Ray Robinson, former NBA basketball player Scottie Pippen, who was part of Michael Jordan's Chicago Bulls, and boxing promoter Ron King. During the years of the struggle for abolition, many slaves attempted to flee to Canada. One of them was Josiah Henson. Upon arriving there, he became a Freemason at Mount Moriah Lodge in Ontario. Henson inspired writer Harriet Beecher Stowe to write the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin.

Another leader of the anti-slavery movement and Freemason was John Brown, who became an enemy of society after the murder in strange circumstances of Freemason William Morgan, who had threatened to reveal the secrets of Freemasonry in a book.

En Estados Unidos, Canadá y Bahamas, además de en Liberia, existe un tipo de masonería denominada Prince Hall que tiene la particularidad de agrupar exclusivamente a masones negros. Se calcula que hay unas cinco mil logias Prince Hall, que deben su nombre al primer afroamericano masón.

Prince Hall era un esclavo de Bahamas que consiguió la libertad en abril de 1770. La logia African se convirtió con los años en una gran logia u obediencia, es decir, en una federación de logias, pero exclusivamente formadas por ciudadanos negros. Esta gran logia adoptó el nombre de Prince Hall, su fundador, tras su muerte en 1807. La Prince Hall es hoy día una obediencia de gran importancia en Estados Unidos. THE MODERN FRENCH RITE

During the Convent (the name given to the meeting) of the 167th Plenary Assembly of the Grand General Chapter of the French Rite, held on 17 February 1986, it was proclaimed as the administrator of the High Degrees of the Rites for which the Grand Orient de France held the patent.

In essence, it is responsible for the management of lodges working at a level higher than the third degree.

In May 1999, the Council of the Order, under the presidency of Grand Master Philippe Guglielmi, decided to re-establish the Grand General Chapter of the French Rite.

The four ‘high degrees’ of the French Rite and their central objectives are as follows:

1st Order: its fundamental theme is the establishment of justice in all areas.

2nd Order, GRAND CHOSEN ONE: refers to the union of men and the achievement of universal values.

3rd Order, KNIGHT MASON: dedicated to the difficulties of social edification and reconstruction.

4th Order, PERFECT FREE MASON: After having gone through the previous stages: establishing justice, working to achieve unity of values and reconstruction, the Mason can establish himself in a just and enlightened society.

The French Rite is currently practised in France, Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, the Netherlands, Belgium, Luxembourg, and some African countries (former French colonies). In Spanish, it is practised in Spain, Morocco, Argentina, Chile, and Mexico. It is practised in Portuguese in Brazil and Portugal.

The French Rite of 1801 is known in Brazil as the ‘Modern Rite’ (a term that arose from simplifying ‘French Modern Rite’).

This rite was introduced in Brazil in 1822, making the French (or Modern) Rite the second Masonic system known in this country, after the Adonhiramite Rite.

In 1837, the first ritual was printed in Brazil in Portuguese, and it is currently practised as a regular rite (as in Spain) and is fully recognised by the Grand Orient of Brazil.

The French Rite in Brazil retains almost all of its purity as established in 1801, but it had to be adjusted to the deist conception, as now observed in France in the Restored French Rite, which reinstates the obligation to believe in a Supreme Being. This adjustment allowed obediences, as in Brazil, to practise this rite without being questioned by the United Grand Lodge of England and by jurisdictions that comply with English rules of regularity.

In Brazil, the Modern (French) Rite was practised regularly from 1822 to 1877 and, as a result of the reforms of the Grand Orient of France, which had a direct impact on the practices of the rite in Brazil, a new edition of the rituals in Portuguese was published in 1892, including the French reforms. Subsequently, the rituals were readjusted to continue the work within the norms of English regularity.

In June 1892, the Grand Chapter of the Modern (French) Rite was created, with its headquarters in Rio de Janeiro.

EL RITO FRANCÉS MODERNO

Durante el Convento (forma de llamar a la reunión) de la CLXVII Asamblea Plenaria del Gran Capítulo General del Rito Francés, celebrado el 17 de febrero 1986, se proclamó al mismo como gestor de los Altos Grados de los Ritos de los que el Gran Oriente de Francia poseía la patente.

En sustancia se avoca a la gestión de los talleres que trabajan en un grado superior al tercer grado.

El mayo de 1999 el Consejo de la Orden bajo la presidencia del Gran Maestro Philippe Guglielmi, decidía la resolución de refundación del Gran Capítulo General de Rito Francés.

Los cuatro "altos grados" del Rito Francés y su objetivo central son como sigue:

1° Orden: tiene por tema fundamental el establecimiento de la justicia en todos los ámbitos.

2° Orden, GRAN ELEGIDO: se refiere a la unión de los hombres y al logro de unos valores universales.

3° Orden, CABALLERO MASÓN: dedicado a las dificultades de la edificación social y la reconstrucción.

4° Orden, PERFECTO MASÓN LIBRE: Después de haber recorrido las etapas anteriores: establecer la justicia, trabajar por realizar la unidad de los valores y reconstruir, el masón se puede establecer en una sociedad justa y esclarecida.

El Rito Francés se practica actualmente en Francia, España, Portugal, Suiza, Holanda, Bélgica, Luxemburgo, en algunos países africanos (antiguas colonias francesas). En español se practica en España, Marruecos, Argentina, Chile y México. Se practica en portugués en Brasil y Portugal.

El Rito Francés de 1801, es conocido en Brasil como "Rito Moderno" (calificativo que surgió al simplificar "Rito Moderno Francés").

Este rito fue introducido en Brasil desde 1822, por lo que fue el Rito Francés (o Moderno), el segundo sistema masónico conocido en este país, después del Rito Adonhiramita.

En 1837 se produjo el primer ritual impreso en Brasil en idioma portugués y actualmente es practicado como un rito regular (igual que en España), y es plenamente reconocido por el Gran Oriente de Brasil.

El Rito Francés conserva en Brasil casi toda su pureza del establecido en 1801; pero tuvo que ser ajustado a la concepción deísta, como ahora se observa en Francia en el Rito Francés Reestablecido, el cual recupera la obligación de la creencia en un Ser Supremo. Este ajuste permitió que las obediencias como sucede en Brasil, puedan practicar este rito sin tener por ello, cuestionamientos adversos por parte de la Gran Logia Unida de Inglaterra y por las jurisdicciones que se ajustan a las reglas de regularidad inglesas.

En Brasil, el Rito Moderno (Francés) se practicó en forma regular desde 1822 hasta 1877 y en consecuencia de las reformas del Gran Oriente de Francia, que impactó en forma directa sobre las prácticas del rito en Brasil, se publicó en 1892, una nueva edición de los rituales en portugués con las reformas francesas incluidas. Posteriormente, se reajustaron los rituales para continuar con el trabajo dentro de las normas de regularidad inglesas.

En junio de 1892, se creó el Gran Capítulo del Rito Moderno (Francés), con sede en Río de Janeiro.

Freemasonry and the connection with rock music royalty in Leicester

Arthur Henry Deacon was born to John Henry Deacon, a shoe clicker at W.A. Smith Boot Manufacturers, and Marion Spence, who were at the time living at Harrington Street, Belgrave, Leicester, on 3 May 1919.

Very little is known about Arthur's early years, but as the Second World War continued, he joined the Royal Regiment of Artillery, finding himself part of the Desert Rats serving in the Middle East, including Libya, during early 1942. Within a couple of months, however, he was recovering from an unknown injury at the No.3 Convalescent Depot in Nathanya, Palestine (now Netanya, Israel) before moving to Tel Aviv.

By August 1942, he was 'somewhere in Egypt', and eight months later, he found himself in Cairo. Between May and November 1943, he attended the Officer Cadet Training Unit, was promoted to 2nd Lieutenant, and was immediately sent to Alexandria prior to the war ending.

During military service, he kept in regular contact with his partner, Lillian Mollie Perkins, a shorthand typist, updating her with his movements and sending her photographs of him in various parts of the Middle East. On 19 February 1944 and by special licence, he married Mollie at St Philip's Church, Evington, in Leicester. Their first child, Robert Bryan Deacon, was born in 1947 – but sadly died aged six years old due to aplastic anaemia,

possibly related to the use of oral chloramphenicol. Their second son, John Richard Deacon, was born at St Francis' Private Hospital, London Road, Oadby, on 20 August 1951, and their daughter, Julie Davina Deacon, was born at the same hospital in 1956.

Arthur worked at the Norwich Union Fire Insurance Society Ltd based on the corner of Bowling Green and Horsefair Streets, Leicester, as a junior clerk, working his way up to an Insurance Inspector and eventually being promoted to Chief Inspector based in their new offices 'Norwich House' which opened on Horsefair Street in 1952.

It was whilst working with Freemason Eric G. Pycroft, Manager at the Norwich Union, that Arthur was proposed as a member of Granstone Lodge. He was Initiated into Freemasonry, aged 36, at the January meeting of the Lodge at Freemasons' Hall, Leicester, in 1956. His seconder was Arthur R. Ralph, a Bank Manager. At the ceremony, the Master invited Percival A. Ward to occupy the Chair for the Initiation ceremony.

The Initiates Charge was "most ably given" by the Junior Warden, who was also Arthur's Proposer. He was Passed to the degree of a Fellowcraft in March 1956 by his Seconder and Raised to Master Mason in November 1956, receiving his Grand Lodge Certificate at the next meeting in December. Having lived in Evington since getting married, the family moved to Hidcote Road, Oadby in 1960.

Unfortunately, however, just three years later, Arthur died on 27 May 1963 at home, aged just 44, after a prolonged battle against stomach cancer. Arthur's widow, Mollie, subsequently brought up their two children, John and Julie, encouraging them to study hard, perhaps reinforcing her experiences in her own childhood, being that her father was a schoolmaster.

Arthur was a "devoted daddy" and was very close to his son John. Whilst the death of his father at the age of 10 deeply affected him, he clearly had a strong influence on John. He encouraged John to engage with his own hobby of electronics, which eventually sparked an interest in his son so much that he wanted to pursue a career in this area.

In addition to electronics, he also loved music, which he consoled himself with after his father's death. His parents bought him his first guitar at the age of seven, and by 14, he joined a local band, the (New) Opposition, later called The Art. The band, where he primarily played bass guitar, had a repertoire of pop, soul and Tamla Motown cover versions and regularly held gigs locally across Leicestershire from 1966 to 1969 in venues such as the Casino Ballroom, which was further up from Freemasons' Hall in London Road, Leicester.

Having gained three A-levels, all grade A, in maths, further maths and physics, at Beauchamp Grammar School, Oadby John secured a place at Chelsea College London University, now part of Kings's College London, where he gained a BSc first class honours degree in electronics. 10 It was whilst he was studying in London that John auditioned for a relatively new band in February 1971 at Imperial College, which had struggled to find a consistent bass guitarist. The audition was clearly successful as the very next day, he was invited to join the band, which was fronted by Farrokh Bulsara, whose stage name was eventually to become the more familiar Freddie Mercury.

This marked the beginning of the band Queen, and along with Sir Brian May and Roger Taylor OBE have endured as a worldwide phenomenon since the mid-1970s. John retired from band in 1997 following the death of Freddie Mercury, but the band's musical legacy continues to entertain and influence new generations.

John, who played the electronic bass guitar, has contributed many well-known bass riffs on classics such as Under Pressure and penned hit songs, including Another One Bites the Dust and I Want to Break Free. Despite John being born and raised in Leicester, Queen, however, only played in the city just once, as part of the student social and art Christmas Ball at Leicester University on 15 December 1973. They played in the University Hall, and John's mother and sister were invited by John to watch them.

John was also instrumental in helping to achieve part of the distinctive sound of Brian May's electronic guitar. Inspired by his father's tinkering with electronics, John modified a radio/cassette player transistor amplifier that he found in a skip along with a hi-fi bookshelf speaker box to create an amplifier affectionately known as the 'Deacy Amp' which has been used on many Queen recordings.

In the latter years of her life, as her health declined, Mollie became a resident at the Royal Masonic Benevolent Institute Care Home, Devonshire Court, in Oadby. She was very open to recounting her fond memories of the early days when she used to help take her son, John, and the rest of the band to local gigs. John was a sometime visitor to Devonshire Court before she sadly passed away, aged 85, on 1 January 2006.

Whilst Mollie's husband Arthur had only been a Freemason for only a relatively short period, the Lodge and its connected charities continued to provide comfort and assistance to his family for over four decades. Arthur also played a key influence on his son, John, inspiring him to pursue a keen interest in electronics and music, leading him to be part of a hugely successful band, Queen, which has sold more than 300 million albums worldwide.

La viuda de Arthur, Mollie, crió a sus dos hijos, John y Julie, animándolos a estudiar mucho, quizá reforzando sus propias experiencias en su infancia, ya que su padre era maestro de escuela.

Arthur era un «padre devoto» y estaba muy unido a su hijo John. Aunque la muerte de su padre a los 10 años le afectó profundamente, es evidente que tuvo una gran influencia en John. ORIGIN AND EVOLUTION OF THE EMULATION RITE

The Emulation Rite emerged as a result of the efforts of several scholarly Masons who, in their time, faced the problem of the use of different ceremonies by the United Grand Lodge of England since its creation in 1813. Its two original branches, the Grand Lodges of the “Ancients” and the “Moderns,” had perfectly defined and seemingly irreconcilable rituals.

The Emulation Rite demonstrated that both systems had great virtues, which could be amalgamated into a new ceremonial system.

Established in 1813, the Emulation Rite has its roots in the ceremonial practices of some Modern lodges, with influence from the Ancients. These types of Modern lodges were also called Traditional. Among these lodges was British No. 8, in which Mason Peter Gilkes was initiated in 1786.

Through the Lodge of Reconciliation, the United Grand Lodge of England held grand demonstrations of this ritualistic model beginning in 1813.

In December 1817, the Stability Lodge was founded by Masons Philip Broadfoot and Thomas Saflerly as a lodge of instruction, and following in its footsteps, the Emulation of Improvement Lodge was created.

During those years, Masons Peter Glikes (who joined the Emulation Lodge in 1825) and George Claret, who had presided over the Lodge of Reconciliation on several occasions, stood out as promoters of the Emulation Rite.

The first Emulation Ritual was published in 1838. This document was not official, but its existence made it possible to teach the rite to many lodges, avoiding accidental distortions or misinterpretations.

In 1871, another new edition of the Emulation rituals was printed, this time with the title The Perfect Ceremonies of Craft Masonry.

The Stability Lodge made its own printing of the rituals until 1902, and the Emulation of Improvement Lodge agreed to print an official ritual until 1969.

The Emulation Rite accepts an obvious connection with the “collateral” degrees that were once given within the symbolic lodges themselves, as complements to the Degree of Master.

These degrees are that of Installed Master and the “Degree of the Mark,” the latter being the spiritual gateway to the Degree of the Holy Royal Arch.

In some cases, information has been published about the “English Rite,” which spiritually integrates (and nothing more) the Emulation Rite or any of the derivative rites with the Degree of the Mark and the Holy Royal Arch as if they were part of a single ladder of degrees.

The Emulation Rite is the most widely used in the United Grand Lodge of England and is also practiced in other countries in different languages.

This rite is practiced in English in Canada, Chile, the Bahamas, Brazil, Argentina, India, Spain, Germany, Israel, and some African cities (former English colonies). It is practiced in French in France and Canada, in Spanish in Spain, Panama, and Argentina, and in Portuguese in Brazil and Portugal.

The Grand Lodge of Moldova (former Soviet republic), created in 1999, with nine lodges and a charter from the Regular Grand Lodge of Italy, works the Emulation Rite in Romanian.

On some occasions, reference has been made in historical books and essays to the Claret, Stability, and Muggeridge rites.

In reality, these are not rites but particular reissues of the Emulation Ritual.

For some time, the Stability Lodge used the Ritual of Conciliation, which was the pioneering material for the later Ritual of Emulation. This practice was known as Stability Working and would later merge with the current Emulation.

Another edition was called Claret Working or Claret Ritual, which was a particular version of the practices of one of the prominent members of the Emulation Lodge.

One of the venerable masters of the Stability Lodge was Henry Muggeridge, who made adjustments to the Stability Working, and the result was called the Muggeridge Working. We are still talking in this case about another moment in the current Emulation.

Both the Emulation Rite and most of the derived rites give fraternal agape a relevance that we will not see in other Masonic rites.

There is also a valid approach that considers the Emulation Rite and its entire ritualistic family as the “Modern English Rite,” as it has also been known, based on the fact that it is a perfectly defined documentary product in England, with its own values beyond those promoted in the Emulation Lodge. However, the concept of “modern” should not be confused with that used in continental Europe.

The session begins in the first degree and ascends as necessary, returning later to the original degree. But the ritualistic closing does not conclude the session. The brothers then move to a table where a light dinner awaits, including several Masonic toasts, beginning with the Worshipful Master and continuing in descending order. The session is not concluded until the toast of the Tyler has been completed.

It is not a common dinner and composure is required, although much more relaxed individual and collective behavior is allowed than in the ritualistic part performed in the Lodge Hall.

Despite what many Masons outside England believe, the Emulation Rite is not the official rite of the United Grand Lodge of England. In fact, other rites are used in this jurisdiction, each with its own particularities, although all of them emerged from the same Emulation Rite with which they share great similarities.

Among these English rites, the Taylor, Sussex, Oxford, Bristol, Logic, and West-End rites stand out.

There are also other rites that only cover a few lodges, such as the Ritus Oxoniensis, which was established in 1926 and is practiced in British lodges in the Province of Oxfordshire, and the Rite Benefactum.

As previously emphasized, several authors of ritualistic works and Masonic historians disagree with calling the ceremonial models derived from Emulation “rites,” and their arguments about the affinity between all these models and their origin pigeonhole them solely as “rituals.”

Under this premise, it is entirely acceptable to define these rites as “rituals,” which does not conflict with the premise of considering these ceremonial systems, which include their own working documents, specific symbolic interpretations, and in some cases even their own paraphernalia, as “rites.”

With this clarification, the reader must make their own decision on how to define each segment of the “Modern English” or “Emulation Family” model, using the technical criteria they deem most appropriate.

La Gran Logia de Moldavia (antigua república soviética), creada en 1999, con nueve logias y con carta patente de la Gran Logia Regular de Italia, trabaja el Rito Emulación en idioma rumano.

En algunas ocasiones se ha hecho referencia en libros y ensayos históricos, a los ritos Claret, Estabilidad y Muggeridge.

En realidad no se trata de ritos sino de reediciones particulares del Ritual de Emulación.

Por algún tiempo, la Logia Estabilidad utilizó el Ritual de Conciliación, siendo éste el material pionero del posterior Ritual de Emulación. Esta práctica fue conocida como Stability Working y posteriormente se fusionaría con el Emulación actual.

Otra edición fue llamada Claret Working o Claret Ritual, el cual era una versión particular de las practicas de uno de los miembros prominentes de la Logia Emulación.

Uno de los venerables maestros de la Logia Estabilidad fue Henry Muggeridge, quien realizó ajustes al Stability Working y el resultado fue llamado Muggeridge Working. Seguimos hablando en este caso de otro momento del Emulación actual.

Tanto el Rito Emulación como la mayoría de ritos derivados, dan al ágape fraternal una relevancia que no veremos en otros ritos masónicos.

Existe un enfoque también valido, de considerar al Rito Emulación y toda su familia ritualística, como "Rito Inglés Moderno" como también se le ha conocido, partiendo de que es un producto documental perfectamente definido en Inglaterra, con valores propios y mas allá de los promovidos en la Logia Emulación. Sin embargo, el concepto "moderno" no debe confundirse con el utilizado en Europa continental.

La sesión comienza en primer grado y se asciende según la necesidad, para regresar posteriormente al grado original. Pero la clausura ritualística no concluye la sesión. A continuación los hermanos pasan a una mesa donde espera una cena breve que incluye varios brindis masónicos, comenzando por el Venerable Maestro y así en orden descendente. La sesión no queda concluida hasta que haya terminado el brindis del Tejador o Centinela (Tyler).

No es una cena común y la compostura es exigida, aunque se permite un comportamiento individual y colectivo mucho más relajado que la parte ritualística efectuada en la Sala de la logia.

Pese a lo que muchos masones fuera de Inglaterra creen, el Rito Emulación no es el oficial de la Gran Logia Unida de Inglaterra. Es más, en esta jurisdicción se utilizan otros ritos que tienen sus propias particularidades, aunque todos ellos surgieron del mismo Rito Emulación con el cual
poseen grandes similitudes.

Entre estos ritos ingleses destacan el Taylor, el Sussex, el Oxford, el Bristol, el Logic y el West-End.

Existen además otros ritos que tan solo cubren a unas cuantas logias como el Ritus Oxoniensis, que se establece en 1926 y se practica en las logias británicas de la Provincia de Oxfordshire, y el Rito Benefactum.

Como se ha recalcado con anterioridad, varios autores de ritualística e historiadores masónicos no están de acuerdo en llamar "ritos" a los modelos ceremoniales derivados de "Emulación" y sus argumentos sobre la afinidad entre todos estos modelos y su origen, los encasilla solamente en el calificativo de "rituales".

Bajo esa premisa es completamente aceptable poder definir a estos ritos como "rituales", lo cual no entra en conflicto con la premisa de considerar como "ritos" a estos sistemas ceremoniales que comprenden documentos propios de trabajo, interpretaciones simbólicas específicas y en algunos casos hasta parafernalia propia.

Bajo esta aclaración, el lector deberá tomar su propia decisión sobre cómo definir a cada segmento del modelo "Inglés Moderno" o "Familia Emulación", bajo los criterios técnicos que considere más apropiados.

THE RITE OF THE ANCIENT GUILD, YORK OR AMERICAN

During the formative period of speculative Freemasonry in England, some lodges were formed in the American colonies.

The first references to a lodge meeting in the American colonies appear in Philadelphia in 1730. This lodge began operating without a charter.

Under the ‘Ancient Charges’, Freemasons were allowed, under an assembly, to form a lodge and conduct their affairs without requiring authorisation, a charter or a patent. If a lodge achieved a certain permanence of operation, it acquired the designation of ‘Lodge of Time Immemorial’ and was considered a regular lodge.

Most Masonic historians believe that the pioneer Masons who established lodges in the old British colony of Pennsylvania were of Irish origin and were middle ranking officers in British regiments. These Masons practised their native system (now known as the Irish Rite), which consisted of a variant of Old York Masonry, practised at that time by the Grand Lodge of Ireland and the Grand Lodge (semi-operative of the City) of York.

Benjamin Franklin referred to several lodges that existed in Pennsylvania in 1730.
Franklin was initiated as a Freemason the following year in a lodge that met at the Tun Tavern in Philadelphia. William Allen was Master of his Tun Tavern Lodge in 1731 and advocated for the formation of a grand lodge with the intention of acquiring jurisdiction over Freemasonry in the surrounding area. This attempt was unsuccessful and expired within a few years.

The Freemasons of Boston, Massachusetts, were probably as active as those of Philadelphia in those early years. However, there are no records of meetings prior to 1733. In that same year, Henry Price, Grand Master of England (of the Moderns), opened a lodge on 30 July 1733 in Boston, constituting what may be known as the first regular American lodge. For this reason, Massachusetts has claimed to be the first to possess the right to establish ‘regular Freemasonry’ in the American colonies.

In June 1730, Daniel Coxe was appointed Provincial Grand Master of New York, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, but there is no record of any Masonic activity on his part.

James Oglethorpe, the founder of the Colony of Georgia and also its first governor, was a staunch supporter of Freemasonry, largely on his own initiative. The Savannah Lodge was organised on 10 February 1733.

In 1766, the name of that lodge was changed to ‘Solomon Lodge’.

Over the next fifty years, several provincial grand masters were appointed in various American colonies.

At the same time as the American Revolution was unfolding, ‘provincial grand lodges’ were formed in Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, and New York under the auspices of both English Masonic constitutions (Ancient and Modern). Provincial grand masters occasionally authorised lodges in other colonies that were not of great importance. In addition, several Lodges of Time Immemorial were formed. Many of these resulted from the Masonic activities of military lodges, which were attached to British regiments stationed in the colonies. Many of these military lodges were authorised by the Grand Lodge of Ireland and practised Old Guild (or Old York) Masonry.

The aristocratic nature of the ‘Modern’ Grand Lodge of England caused a delay in its entry into the colonies, with the result that, during the American War of Independence, a large number of its members tended to be ‘Tories’ (monarchists). During the war years, many of these Tories returned to England, causing many of the ‘Modern’ lodges to lose their future and disappear.

With the successful conclusion of the War of Independence and England's political and diplomatic exhaustion, American Freemasons, motivated by desire and necessity, began to form their own grand lodges. George Washington was invited several times to become Grand Master of the United States. Washington declined, and several states then formed their own grand lodges independently.

Initially, some of these new Grand Lodges imitated the Ancient York Masons (A.Y.M.), taking their customs and laws from the constitutions of the Ancients, while others proceeded to imitate the style of the Moderns more closely. Today, the grand lodges of the United States fall under one of the following designations: ‘Ancient Free and Accepted Masons’ (‘A.F. & A.M.’), and ‘Ancient Freemasons’ or ‘Free and Accepted Masons’ (‘F. & A.M.’).

As the American lodges were ‘Ancient’, the predominant ones in their environment at the time of American Independence, they were able to develop, from the end of the 18th century, a whole system of their own that we now know as the York Rite.

The York Rite is a direct derivation of the ritual of the ‘Ancient’ English Freemasons and the Irish ritual (which are very similar to each other). This system developed several sets of degrees or inner rites, based on high degrees originally developed in England and Ireland (with the exception of the ‘cryptic’ degrees, which originated in France).

In addition to some modifications in the position of lodge officers and the simplification of ritual formulas in the opening and closing of the blue (or symbolic) lodge session, the York Rite functioned in a deistic form since its introduction in America, thus avoiding problems in the interpretation of its contents and also allowing the admission of believing members, but with a strong liberal tendency.

The part of the York Rite that corresponds to the three symbolic degrees, better known in this system as ‘blue’ degrees, forms the Ancient Craft Masonry Rite. This would be the correct name for the symbolic part of this rite, but it has been common
to refer to it generically, or in terms of the entire system, as the York Rite (also known as the American Rite or Webb Rite).

It should be noted that it is not correct to refer to the symbolic Masonry of the York Rite as the ‘Universal Rite’.

This error arises as a problem in the translation of this system and in literally repeating the view that many American Freemasons have of their rite, when they claim that the first three degrees practised there (Ancient Craft degrees) are the basis or “universal rite” of Freemasonry.

In this case, they are not referring specifically to a particular system called the ‘Universal Rite’, but simply to the fact that the first three degrees are the ‘universal basis’ of Freemasonry.

This naming error is continually repeated even by Freemasons who call themselves ‘Yorkites’ and is very common in conversations among Scottish Freemasons, who have had little or no contact with Freemasonry of the Ancient Craft Rite, the primary basis of the York Rite.

Another major naming error occurs in Brazil, where for many years the Emulation Rite was called the ‘English York Rite’ and, by simplifying the title, the error was magnified, as it was later called the ‘York Rite’. This error is the result of a publication of the Emulation rituals in Portuguese, under the authorisation of the Grand Orient of Brazil, with the title ‘Exact Ceremonies of the York Rite’. The editor believed that both systems were the same and disseminated this information.

It has only been in recent years that Brazilian historians have conducted research to clarify this major error in terminology.

Finally, another interesting case can be seen in Bolivian ‘York’ Freemasonry, where at the end of the 20th century, a large group of Bolivian “Scottish” Freemasons founded an obedience called the ‘Grand Lodge of the York Rite in Bolivia’.

This organisation uses rituals whose origin we do not know in this research, and they have adopted an ornamental structure, furniture arrangement and paraphernalia similar to the Emulation Rite. To this model, they added all the administrative terminology of the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, resulting in a highly hybrid ritual practice which, despite being called ‘York’, operates with all the ideological weight of the Scottish Rite.

The ‘Grand Lodge of the York Rite in Bolivia’ also practises the high York degrees under the British styles (The Holy Royal Arch and the cryptic degrees subject to it).

This Bolivian jurisdiction is supported in its high degrees by the Freemasons of Scotland, but it is not recognised by the United Grand Lodge of England and other regular obediences worldwide.

The York or American Rite is actually a Masonic system composed of several internal and administratively independent rites. In order to avoid lengthy discussions about whether or not the three degrees of the Ancient Craft are part of the York Rite, we will treat blue Masonry as part of a structural whole.

The degrees of this rite are described as follows:

Lodges of the Rite or Ancient Craft Masonry:

1st Apprentice.

2nd Fellow Craft.

3rd Master Mason.

Chapters of the Rite or Royal Arch Masonry:

4th Master of the Mark.

The Mason Thomas Smith Webb (1771-1819) was initiated on 17 December 1790 at the Rising Sun Lodge in New Hampshire, United States, and became Grand Master of the Grand Lodge of Rhode Island from 1813 to 1814.

Thomas Smith Webb worked with extreme dedication for the development of this rite in America, and much of the adaptations of its degrees from European degrees are due to him, which is why the York Rite was known for a long time as the Webb Rite.

Webb's importance in York Masonry is highlighted by his reissue of the 1772 English instruction book entitled Preston's Illustrations. Webb published it in 1797 under the title Webb's Masonic Monitor.

The Webb Monitor contains the Old Charges, General Regulations, emblems, and ceremonies of the Old Masonic Guild. This document was subsequently republished by Dalcho in 1807; by Cole in 1817; by Hardie in 1818; by Jeremy Cross in 1819; by Tannehill in 1824; by Parmele in 1825; by Charles W. Moore in 1846; by Cornelius Moore in 1846; by Dove in 1847; by Davis in 1849; by Stewart in 1851; by Mackey in 1852; by Macoy in 1853; and by Sickles in 1866, each with their own particular interpretation, but without straying from the true meaning of the Rite, as it has come down to us today.

The Royal Arch Masonry that developed in America and spread throughout the world is a derivation of the Holy Royal Arch created in England, which fully recognises its American counterpart.

Cryptic Masonry has its origins in the spread of several collateral degrees within the Rite of Perfection (now the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite), which were gradually abandoned by the original system and, in the same gradual manner, incorporated into the York system.

The degrees of chivalry were developed in Great Britain and used by North American blue Masonry, where they were strengthened and became the upper part of the York system.

These three interior rites (Royal Arch, Cryptic and Chivalry) are practised throughout the world, either in the North American or English style.

One mode differs from the other in some ritualistic and costume variations, but above all in the way the degrees are organised, where some of them are compulsory in one custom and optional in another.

Another important aspect is the way in which these degrees are governed and the order in which they are conferred. Although of very little significance, there are many local variations in Ancient Guild Masonry, and each grand lodge in the United States has its own authorised ritual. It is communication between the Masonic Education committees and the study lodges of the different American obediences that maintains the purity of interpretation of the Rite.

Despite the above, in the United States, the importance of the rituals printed under the title Look to the East, prepared in 1904 by Brother Mason Ralph P. Lester of New York, is fully recognised.

This book of ceremonies is considered a foundational and unifying document for most of the rituals of the Ancient Masonic Guild, which have been printed in the United States.

For York Rite Freemasonry, the development of collateral or paramasonic orders has been more important than for any other rite in the world. These organisations cover areas not directly served by the internal degrees.

Among these orders are youth organisations such as DeMolay, Rainbow, Daughters of Job, etc.

There are also women's orders such as the Order of the Star of the East, Amaranth, Queen of the South, White Shrine, Daughters of the Nile, etc. Others have a strong philanthropic focus, such as the Ancient and Arabian Order of the Nobles of the Mystic Shrine, the High Cedars of Lebanon, the Reliquary, etc. Finally, there are social orders such as the High Twelve.

These organisations are not unique to the York Rite, as they are also shared with the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite, but in their ritualistic behaviour, they are comparable to the internal dynamics of the York Rite bodies.

On the other hand, York Rite Freemasons in America and their counterparts in Great Britain practise, if they so wish, a series of collateral degrees that were adopted after the consolidation of the York Rite and integrated into a parallel system called ‘Allied Masonic Degrees’.

EL RITO DEL ANTIGUO GREMIO, YORK O AMERICANO

Durante el período formativo de la francmasonería especulativa en Inglaterra, se formaron algunas logias en las colonias americanas. Las primeras referencias sobre la reunión de una logia en las colonias americanas aparecen en Philadelphia en 1730. Esta logia comenzó a funcionar sin una carta patente.

Bajo los "Antiguos Cargos", a los francmasones les era permitido bajo una asamblea, formar una logia y conducir sus asuntos sin requerir de una autorización, carta constitutiva o patente. Si alguna logia lograba cierta permanencia de operación, ésta adquiría la denominación de "Logia de Tiempo Inmemorial" y se le consideraba una logia regular.

La mayoría de historiadores masónicos consideran que los masones pioneros, que establecieron logias en la anti-gua colonia británica de Pennsylvania, fueron de origen irlandés y eran militares de mandos medios de los regimientos británicos. Estos masones practicaban su sistema natal (ahora conocido como Rito Irlandés), y que consistía en una variante de la Antigua Masonería York, practicada entonces por la Gran Logia de Irlanda y por la Gran Logia (semioperativa de la Ciudad) de York.

Benjamín Franklin se refirió a varias logias que existían en Pennsylvania en 1730. Franklin se inició como masón al año siguiente en una logia que se reunía en la taberna Tun de Philadelphia. William Allen fue Maestro de su Logia Tun Tabern en 1731 y se pronunció por la formación de una gran logia con la intención de adquirir jurisdicción de la masonería en el área circunvecina. Este intento no fue efectivo y expiró dentro de pocos años.

Los francmasones de Boston, Massachusetts, fueron probablemente tan activos como aquellos de Philadelphia en esos primeros años. Sin embargo, no existen registros de reuniones anteriores a 1733. En ese mismo año, Henry Price, Gran Maestro de Inglaterra (de los Modernos) abrió una logia el 30 de julio de 1733 en Boston, y constituyó lo que puede ser conocido como la primer logia regular americana. Por lo anterior, Massachusetts ha reclamado ser el primero en poseer el derecho para el establecimiento de la "masonería regular" en las colonias americanas.

En junio de 1730 Daniel Coxe fue designado para ser Gran Maestro Provincial de Nueva York, Pennsylvania y Nueva Jersey, pero no hay registro de alguna actividad masónica de su parte.

James Oglethorpe, el fundador de la Colonia de Georgia y también su primer gobernador, fue un firme adherente de la francmasonería, en gran parte por su iniciativa. La Logia Savannah fue organizada el 10 de febrero de 1733.

En 1766 el nombre de esa logia fue cambiado a "Logia Salomón".

Durante los siguientes cincuenta años, fueron designa-dos varios grandes maestros provinciales en varias colonias americanas.

Al mismo tiempo que se desarrollaba la Revolución Americana, en Massachusetts, Pennsylvania y Nueva York, se formaron "grandes logias provinciales" al ampa-ro de ambas constituciones masónicas inglesas (Antigua y Moderna). Los grandes maestros provinciales ocasionalmente autorizaron logias en otras colonias que no tenían una gran relevancia. Adicionalmente, se formaron varias Logias de Tiempo Inmemorial. Muchas de éstas resulta-ron de las actividades masónicas de las logias militares, las cuales estaban agregadas a los regimientos británicos estacionados en las colonias. Muchas de éstas logias mili-tares fueron autorizadas por la Gran Logia de Irlanda y
practicaban la Masonería del Antiguo Gremio (o Antiguo York).

La naturaleza aristocrática de la Gran Logia "Moderna" de Inglaterra le causó un retardo para ingresar en las colonias con tal resultado que, durante la Guerra de Independencia Americana, un gran número de sus miembros tendieron a ser "Tories" (monarquistas). Durante los años de la guerra, muchos de estos tories retornaron a Inglate-rra provocando que muchas de las logias de los "Modernos", quedaran sin futuro y desaparecieron.

Con la conclusión exitosa de la Guerra de Independencia, con el agotamiento político y diplomático de Inglaterra, los francmasones americanos, motivados por el anhelo y la necesidad, comenzaron a formar sus propias grandes logias. George Washington fue invitado varias veces a ser Gran Maestro de los Estados Unidos. Was-hington declinó y varios estados formaron entonces sus propias grandes logias en forma independiente.

Inicialmente algunas de estas nuevas grandes logias imitaron a los Antiguos Masones York (A. M. Y.), tomando sus costumbres y leyes de las constituciones de los Antiguos, mientras que otras procedieron a imitar más el estilo de los Modernos. Hoy en día, las grandes logias de los Estados Unidos se incluyen bajo una de las siguientes designaciones: "Masones Antiguos Libres y Aceptados" ("A.F. & A. M."), y "Antiguos Francmasones" o "Masones Libres y Aceptados" ("F. & A.M.").

Al ser las logias americanas "Antiguas", las predominantes en su entorno al concretarse la Independencia Americana, éstas pudieron desarrollar desde finales del siglo XVIII, todo un sistema propio que ahora conocemos como Rito York.

El Rito York es una derivación directa del ritual de los "Antiguos" masones ingleses y del ritual de los irlandeses (muy parecidos entre ellos). Este sistema desarrolló varios paquetes de grados o ritos interiores, a partir de altos grados desarrollados originalmente en Inglaterra e Irlanda (con excepción de los grados "crípticos", los cuales tienen su origen en Francia).

Además de algunas modificaciones en la posición de los oficiales de una logia y la simplificación de formulas rituales en la apertura y clausura de la sesión de la logia azul (o simbólica), el Rito York funcionó desde su incursión en América en forma deísta, evitando así problemas en la interpretación de sus contenidos y permitiendo además el ingreso de miembros creyentes; pero de fuerte tendencia liberal.

La parte del Rito York que corresponde a los tres grados simbólicos, mejor conocidos en este sistema como grados "azules", conforma el Rito del Antiguo Gremio Masónico (Ancient Craft Masonry). Este sería el nombre correcto para este rito en su parte simbólica, pero ha sido común llamarle en forma genérica o en una visión de todo el sis-tema completo, como Rito York (también conocido como Rito Americano o Rito de Webb).

Cabe aclarar que no es correcto referirse a la masonería simbólica del Rito York, como "Rito Universal".

Este error surge como un problema en la traducción de este sistema y en retomar en forma literal la apreciación que muchos masones norteamericanos tienen de su rito, cuando afirman que los tres primeros grados que ahí se practican (Ancient Craft degrees), son la base o "rito universal" de la masonería.

En este caso no se refieren exactamente a un sistema particular llamado "Rito Universal", sino simplemente a que los tres primeros grados son la "base universal" de la masonería.

Este error nominal es continuamente repetido incluso por masones que se dicen "yorquinos" y es muy común escucharlo en pláticas de masones escoceses, que muy poco o ningún contacto han tenido con la masonería del Rito del Antiguo Gremio, base primordial del Rito York.

Otro gran error de nominación sucede en Brasil, donde por muchos años se llamó al Rito Emulación como "Rito York Inglés" y al simplificar el título el error se agrandaba, pues posteriormente se le llamó "Rito de York". Este error es producto de una publicación de los rituales de Emulación en portugués, bajo al autorización del Gran Oriente de Brasil, con el título de "Ceremonias exactas del Rito de York". El Editor creyó que ambos sistemas eran lo mismo y así lo difundió.

Ha sido hasta en los últimos años en que los historiadores brasileños han preparado investigaciones con el fin de aclarar este gran error de calificativos.

Finalmente, es de notarse otro caso interesante se aprecia en la masonería "yorquina" boliviana, donde a finales del siglo XX, un grupo numeroso de masones "escoceses" bolivianos, fundaron una obediencia llamada "Gran Logia del Rito de York en Bolivia".

Esta organización utiliza rituales cuyo origen no conocemos en esta investigación, y han adoptado una estructura ornamental, disposición del mobiliario y parafernalia similar al Rito Emulación. A este modelo le agregaron to-da la terminología administrativa propia del Rito Escocés Antiguo y Aceptado, resultando así una práctica ritual por demás híbrida, la cual, pese a denominarse "de York", funciona con todo el peso ideológico "escocés".

La "Gran Logia del Rito de York en Bolivia", practica además los altos grados yorquinos bajo los estilos británicos (El Santo Real Arco, y los grados crípticos sometidos a éste).

Esta jurisdicción boliviana es en sus altos grados, apoyada por los masones de Escocia, pero no es reconocida por la Gran Logia Unida de Inglaterra y las demás obediencias regulares a nivel mundial.

El Rito York o Americano es en realidad un sistema masónico compuesto por varios ritos interiores y administrativamente independientes. Para no entrar en grandes discusiones sobre si los tres grados del Antiguo Gremio son o no el Rito York, trataremos a la masonería azul co-mo parte de un todo estructural.

Los grados de este rito se describen como sigue:

1° Aprendiz.

2° Compañero.

3º Maestro.

Capítulos del Rito o Masonería del Real Arco (Royal Arch Masonry):

El masón Thomas Smith Webb (1771-1819), fue iniciado el 17 de diciembre de 1790, en la Logia Rising Sun de New Hampshire, Estados Unidos, y llegó a ser Gran Maestro de la Gran Logia de Rhode Island de 1813 a 1814.

Thomas Smith Webb, trabajó con extrema dedicación por el desarrollo de este rito en América y a él se le debe mucho de las adaptaciones que tienen sus grados, a partir de grados europeos, por lo que al Rito York por mucho tiempo se le conoció como Rito de Webb.

La importancia de Webb en la Masonería York, se resalta al apreciar la reedición que él hace del libro de instrucción inglés de 1772, titulado Preston's Illustrations. Webb lo publica en 1797, bajo el título de Webb's Masonic Monitor.

El Monitor de Webb contiene los Antiguos Cargos, Regulaciones Generales, emblemas y ceremonias propias del Antiguo Gremio Masónico. Posteriormente, este documento fue reeditado por Dalcho en 1807; por Cole en 1817; por Hardie en 1818; por Jeremy Cross en 1819; por Tannehill en 1824; por Parmele en 1825; por Charles W. Moore en 1846; por Cornelius Moore en 1846; por Dove en 1847; por Davis en 1849; por Stewart en 1851; por Mackey en 1852; por Macoy en 1853 y por Sickles en 1866, cada uno con su interpretación particular, pero sin extraviar el sentido propio del Rito, tal cual nos ha llegado hasta ahora.

La masonería del Real Arco que se desarrolló en América y así se difundió al mundo, es una derivación del Santo Real Arco creado en Inglaterra, el cual reconoce plenamente a su similar estadounidense.

La masonería críptica, tiene su origen en la difusión de varios grados colaterales en el seno del Rito de Perfección (ahora Rito Escocés Antiguo y Aceptado), los cuales fueron gradualmente abandonados por el sistema original y en esa misma gradualidad fueron incorporados al sistema York.

Los grados de caballería fueron desarrollados en Gran Bretaña y utilizados por la masonería azul norteamericana, donde se fortalecieron y se convirtieron en la parte alta del sistema York.

Estos tres ritos interiores (Real Arco, Crípticos y Caballería), se practican en todo el mundo, ya sea a la usanza norteamericana o a la inglesa.

En los países de la Comunidad Británica, los grados se confieren como sigue:

Un modo se distingue del otro por algunas variantes ritualísticas y de vestuario, pero sobre todo por la forma de organizar los grados, donde algunos de ellos en una usanza son obligatorios y en otra pueden ser opcionales.

Otro aspecto importante es la forma de gobernar dichos grados y el orden de conferirlos. Aunque de pequeñísima repercusión, existen muchas variantes locales en la Masonería del Antiguo Gremio y cada gran logia en los Estados Unidos tiene su propio ritual autorizado y es la comunicación entre los comités de Educación Masónica y las logias de estudio de las diferentes obediencias americanas, lo que mantiene al Rito en su pureza de interpretación.

Pese a lo anterior, en los Estados Unidos es plenamente reconocida la importancia de los rituales impresos bajo el título de Look to the East, preparado en 1904 por el hermano Masón Ralph P. Lester, de Nueva York.

Este libro de ceremonias es considerado un documento base y unificador de la mayoría de los rituales del Antiguo Gremio Masónico, que han sido impresos en los Estados Unidos.

Para la masonería del Rito York ha sido importante el desarrollo de las órdenes colaterales o paramasónicas, más que para cualquier otro rito en el mundo. Estas organizaciones cubren áreas no atendidas directamente por los grados internos.

Entre estas órdenes encontramos juveniles como DeMolay, del Arcoiris, de las Hijas de Job, etc.

Existen también femeninas como la Orden de la Estrella de Oriente, del Amaranto, de la Reina del Sur, del White Shrine, de las Hijas del Nilo, etc. Otras son de fuerte sentido filantrópico como la Antigua y Arábiga Orden de los Nobles del Místico Shrine, de los Altos Cedros del Líbano, del Relicario, etc. Y finalmente, las hay de tipo social como el High Twelve.

Estas organizaciones no son propias del Rito York, pues incluso se comparten con la Masonería del Rito Escocés Antiguo y Aceptado, pero en su comportamiento ritualístico, es equiparable en la dinámica interna de los cuerpos del Rito York.

Por otro lado, los masones del Rito York en América y sus similares en Gran Bretaña, practican si así lo desean, una serie de grados colaterales que fueron adoptados con posterioridad a la consolidación del Rito York y que fueron integrados en un sistema paralelo llamado "Grados Masónicos Asociados" (Allied Masonic Degrees).

Estos grados asociados o grados "verdes", son similares a nivel mundial, pero en América se otorgan bajo reglas estructurales diferentes a las que se aplican en Gran Bretaña.

Grand Lodge suspended Daniel Jadue's Masonic rights on ethical grounds

The Grand Master of Freemasonry, Sebastián Jans, confirmed that the council of the Grand Lodge of Chile decided to suspend the Masonic rights of the former mayor of Recoleta, Daniel Jadue, after he was formally charged in the Farmacias Populares case for disloyal administration, fraud, bribery, bankruptcy offences and tax fraud.

Speaking to CNN Chile, Jans said, ‘Our courts do not judge crimes, let that be clear. Our courts judge ethical conduct. And the indictment contained more than enough evidence from the point of view of what constitutes an ethical objection.’

‘I am not the one who judges it, there was a court that judged it,’ added Jans, who explained what happens when there are charges against members of Freemasonry.

‘Our institution is hierarchical. If a person has never been president of the lodge, so to speak, it is up to the jurisdictional court to judge them. If they have ever been president of a lodge, in that case they go to the grand court of the Grand Lodge,’ said Jans.

‘In that sense, our system is very clear and transparent,’ he said.

Jans also warned that this same mechanism could occur in the event that any of the Supreme Court ministers facing accusations belong to the Freemasons. ‘If there is an objection regarding their conduct, they are immediately removed from office,’ he announced.

Finally, regarding the ministers' actions, he noted that ‘I see ethical failings, at least in three cases I see it clearly.’

Cuando un masón comete delitos o actos que van en contra de los principios de la masonería, suceden estas cosas.

El gran maestro de la Masonería, Sebastián Jans, confirmó que el consejo de la Gran Logia de Chile decidió suspender los derechos masónicos del exalcalde de Recoleta, Daniel Jadue, tras su formalización en la causa sobre Farmacias Populares por administración desleal, estafa, cohecho, delito concursal y fraude al fisco.

En declaraciones a CNN Chile, Jans dijo que “nuestros tribunales no juzgan delitos, y eso que se entienda. Nuestros tribunales lo que juzgan son conductas éticas. Y en la imputación aparecieron elementos de sobra potentes desde el punto de vista de lo que significa una apreciación de objeción ética”.

“Yo no soy el que lo juzga, hubo un tribunal que lo juzga”, añadió Jans, quien explicó lo que ocurre cuando hay imputaciones contra miembros de la masonería.

“Nuestra institución es jerarquizada. Si una persona no ha sido nunca presidente de la logia, por decirlo así, corresponde que el tribunal jurisdiccional lo juzgue. Si ha sido alguna vez presidente de alguna logia, en ese caso pasa al gran tribunal de la Gran Logia”, indicó Jans.

“En ese sentido, nuestro sistema es bien claro y transparente”, aseguró.

Jans también advirtió que este mismo mecanismo podría darse en el caso de que alguno de los ministros de la Corte Suprema que están bajo acusaciones pertenezca a la masonería. “Si hay una objeción respecto a su conducta, inmediatamente se pone a disposición”, anunció.

Finalmente, sobre la actuación de los ministros, señaló que “yo aprecio fallas éticas, por lo menos en tres lo noto claramente”.

ENEMIES TO BE COMBATED

Considering that Freemasonry accepts free people of good character, defined in family, work, spiritual and social terms; it is strange to have to talk about enemies to fight; because we expect these people to be highly educated and/or academically trained, where they are supposed to have had adequate and normal development in their way of being in order to treat the people around them; for you must know that the enemies to fight are internal, psychologically affecting their behaviour.

The enemies to be fought are not shortcomings in the artistic, technological, intellectual, literary or philosophical spheres, or perhaps a lack of entrepreneurial spirit. Significant mistakes are often made in these specific areas, affecting personal or family budgets, but they can be corrected with the support of friends, family or partners.

It should be noted that the main enemy to be fought is ignorance, which I consider essential because it encompasses the others, as it opposes wisdom and the common sense that we humans must have in order not to affect the values of righteousness, honesty, and nobility, among others, instilled and internalised in our primary family education.

This ignorance is often observed in educated and/or academically trained people, a product of the same arrogance, haughtiness, and vanity that causes them to treat other human beings with disdain when saying or teaching something. This human flaw, lacking inner dedication, causes their ignorance to increase day by day; however, it cannot be corrected with support, but rather requires personal and individual work to experience inner transformation and reflect it around them.

As a result of that same ignorance, on the other hand, we find fanaticism, which generates excessive passion and tenacity in the defence of beliefs or opinions, especially religious and/or political ones, without being open to listening, analysing, or discussing, in an understandable way, situations or arguments that may arise in dialogue, in order to avoid irreconcilable polarisation between childhood friends, work colleagues, and even family members.

The imposition of ideologies, philosophies, and beliefs leads to fanaticism, thus generating a lack of temperance and, consequently, making one aggressive without being able to argue and self-criticise, as tolerance is lost.

Listening should be a quality possessed by all human beings, because we have two ears to listen with and one mouth to speak with; analysing before expressing a concept or opinion should be fundamental, so as not to hurt sensibilities and to express disagreements without offending or trying to convince others of one's fanaticism.

Fanaticism has caused considerable damage since time immemorial, since humans considered it a lack of temperance, giving free rein to their passions, maintaining total excess or recklessness, due to a lack of moderation or restraint, known as human intemperance, considered a dangerous edge or razor's edge that does not allow for the teachings of a higher consciousness.

Finally, human ignorance feeds ambition, but that ambition, which lacks integrity and respect, turns it into greed; like an insatiable appetite involving the overvaluation of the self and the desire to possess and consume endlessly; that is, the greedy person considers themselves deserving of what they desire because they have more merit, power, status or fame than another person; therefore, it becomes a burning desire to achieve something at the expense of anti-values and principles.

ENEMIGOS POR COMBATIR

Teniendo en cuenta que, la masonería acepta a personas libres y de buenas costumbres, definidas familiar, laboral, espiritual y socialmente; pues se hace raro que, se tenga que hablar de enemigos por combatir; debido a que, esperamos de esas personas con alta educación y/o formación académica, donde se supone que ha tenido un desarrollo adecuado y normal en su forma de ser para tratar a las personas que lo rodean; pues has de saber, que los enemigos por combatir son interiores, afectando psicológicamente su comportamiento.

Los enemigos por combatir no son las falencias en la parte artística; o tal vez, tecnológica o intelectual, la literaria o filosófica; o quizás, carencias para el emprendimiento; en muchas ocasiones, se cometen errores significativos, en estas áreas específicas, afectando la estructura presupuestal personal o familiar; pero, sin embargo, se pueden corregir con apoyos de amistades, familiares o de socios.

Cabe resaltar que, el principal enemigo por combatir es la ignorancia; y lo considero esencial, porque encierra a los otros; debido a que, se opone a la sabiduría, a ese sentido común que debemos tener los seres humanos, para no afectar los valores de rectitud, honestidad y nobleza; entre otros, inculcados e interiorizados en nuestra formación primaria familiar.

Esa ignorancia se observa con frecuencia en personas educadas y/o con formación académica, producto de la misma soberbia, altivez y vanidad tratando con desdén a otros seres humanos al decir o enseñar algo; esa falla humana, carente de dedicación a su interior, hacen que día a día, se incremente su ignorancia; pero, sin embargo, no se pueden corregir con apoyos, se tiene que trabajar personal e individualmente, para vivir la transformación interior y se refleje a su alrededor.

Como resultado de esa misma ignorancia; por otro lado, encontramos el fanatismo; que genera un apasionamiento y una tenacidad desmedida en la defensa de creencias u opiniones, especialmente religiosas y/o políticas; sin encontrarse abierto a escuchar, a analizar, a debatir, de manera entendible, situaciones o argumentos que se puedan presentar al dialogar, con el fin de evitar polarizaciones irreconciliables, entre amigos de infancia, compañeros laborales e inclusive, familiares.

Las imposiciones de ideologías, filosofías y creencias conllevan al fanatismo, generando de esta manera, una falta de templanza y en consecuencia, convirtiéndolo en agresivo sin poder argumentar y autocriticar, al perder la tolerancia.

El escuchar debe ser una cualidad de todos los seres humanos, porque tenemos dos oídos para escuchar más una boca para hablar menos; analizar antes de emitir un concepto u opinión, debe ser lo fundamental, para no herir susceptibilidades y de alguna manera manifestar los desacuerdos de posiciones sin ofender ni tratar de convencer a otras personas de su fanatismo.

El fanatismo que bastante daño ha causado desde tiempos inmemoriales, desde cuando el ser humano lo considero una falta de templanza, al dar rienda suelta a sus pasiones, manteniendo una desmesura o desenfreno total, por la falta de moderación o mesura, conocida como la Intemperancia del ser humano, considerado como un borde o filo peligroso que no permite las enseñanzas para una conciencia superior.

Finalmente, la ignorancia del ser humano retroalimenta la ambición, pero esa ambición que es carente de integridad y de respeto, la convierte en codicia; como apetito insaciable implicando la sobrevaloración del ser mismo y el deseo de poseer y consumir sin fin; es decir, el codicioso se considera merecedor de aquello que desea por tener más mérito, poder, estatus o fama que otra persona; por lo tanto, viene a ser el deseo ardiente de conseguir algo a costa de antivalores y de principios.

No podemos confundir este enemigo por combatir con el valor de la ambición, que consiste en la voluntad de conseguir el máximo rendimiento y de hacer las cosas no solo bien, sino también como sea posible, e intentar de superarse cada día; siendo esto, un valor no solo aplicable para las personas sino para la sociedad misma.

Este tercer enemigo por combatir, es aún más delicado; debido a que, el ser humano tiende a confundir el valor de la ambición con la codicia; convirtiéndolo en un hipócrita, debido a que muestra unas condiciones totalmente diferente, inclusive su la voluntad y espiritualidad y lo que persigue realmente en sí mismo, es un poder, es una traición, por lo que se debe hacer un trabajo mucho mayor internamente, para dejar claro lo que es la ambición y la codicia, ya que con esto último; lo cual, aplicaría la injusticia y no transigiría llegar a una conciencia superior.

En conclusión, eso tres enemigos por combatir, se convierte en oscuridad del ser humano, para lo cual podemos apreciar que, los enemigos son complementarias entre sí, se realizan retroalimentan y fortalecen para aquellas personas que son débiles en su templanza, por lo que le corresponde hacer un trabajo interior, para que esa oscuridad se vuelva luces y pueden irradiar a quienes lo rodean, pero no solamente de manera social, sino también en lo personal y familiar, debido a que hay muchas personas que, son luz en la calle y oscuridad en la familia, buscando un bien común obtendríamos el propio.

THE STANDARD SCOTTISH RITE

The Standard Scottish Rite (or Standard Rite of Scotland, as it is called in France) is a Christian rite with Catholic and Presbyterian influences that cannot be categorised within the family groups suggested in this research. On the contrary, the Standard Scottish Rite can be classified as a rite with unique characteristics in terms of its origins, objectives and ritual features.

This rite is mainly used by the Grand Lodge of Scotland, and we can appreciate its most notable feature, which is that it is the current Masonic system most closely attached to the instruction of the operative times of the early 17th century, the semi-operative Ashmolean ritualistic practices of the second half of the 17th century, and the pre-Andersonian practices of the early 18th century.

Prior to the Standard Scottish Rite, some rituals were practised from around 1736 onwards. The origin of these ceremonies is attributed to the lodges of Edinburgh and its surroundings, which had been practising them informally since the mid-17th century.

In addition to their practice in Scotland, there are several Standard Scottish Rite lodges in France, under the jurisdiction of the French National Grand Lodge, and it is practised by Lodge La Lumiere No. 42 in the Middle East, under the jurisdiction of the Grand Lodge of Israel.

Originally, they were only practised in English, and it was not until the end of the 20th century that they began to be practised in French.

The Standard Scottish Rite has commonly been known as Scottish Working. The term ‘standard’ has been more than just a name; it has been a qualifying adjective.
Until the mid-20th century, various ritual forms originating from the same source were practised in the Grand Lodge of Scotland. Necessity led to the search for a uniform or ‘standardised’ ritualistic procedure.

These practices were heavily influenced by the practices of Kilwinning Lodge No. 0, founded in 1598.

The Grand Lodge of Scotland was founded on 30 December 1736, its first Grand Master being the Brigadier of the Royal Company of Archers, Sir William St. Clair of Rosslyn, who had received his Masonic degrees on 8 May of that same year. St. Clair possessed, in his own right, the franchise lineage to preside over the operative and semi-operative lodges of Scotland and therefore held the historical prerogative to govern Scottish symbolic Freemasonry.

To ensure the functioning of the new Masonic rules, St. Clair renounced his right to inherit the office of Grand Master of Scotland and gave way to democratic models.
This designation and administrative adjustment created a clear connection between the operative and semi-operative Masonry of the 17th century and the speculative Masonry of 18th-century Scotland, thereby allowing the Standard Scottish Rite to embrace all the cultural and spiritual baggage of the original Masonic practices.
During its development and as one of several predecessors to the Standard Scottish Rite, we can highlight the ‘MacBride Ritual’.

MacBride was Worshipful Master in 1867 of the Leven St. John Lodge (he was also a dual member of the Progreso Lodge). The Leven St. John Lodge originally used a ritual based on William Preston's Illustrations of Freemasonry. MacBride was a scholar of symbolism and designed his own system for his lodge, based on contemporary Scottish practices.

In 1899, MacBride suggested the use of an honorary degree in the Scottish ritual, called the ‘Degree of Most Excellent Instructor’.

In that year, MacBride published the Masonic Instructor, which is, according to D. Murria Lyon (Grand Secretary of the United Grand Lodge of England and Secretary of the Quatuor Coronati Lodge No. 2076 in London), ‘a document of great quality’.

The ceremonies established in the Masonic Instructor, later known as the MacBride Ritual, provided ritual practices that were later taken up in the formation of subsequent versions of the Scottish ritual that emerged during the 20th century.

Since the appearance of the MacBride Ritual, there is no evidence of substantial reforms to this Masonic system for almost a century.

INCURSION OF THE STANDARD SCOTTISH RITE IN FRANCE

In 1986, on the initiative of Gislebertus Lodge No. 478 in Autun, France, a translation based on recognised Scottish practices was proposed to the French National Grand Lodge, unifying three documents:

1. The Standard Ritual of Scottish Freemasonry1, from Edinburgh, published in 1969. 1( it was written that way, with the letter ‘e’)

2. The Scottish Workings of Craft Masonry, from London, published in 1967.

3. The Scottish Craft Ritual, from Edinburgh, published in 1954.

Once unofficially authorised by the French National Grand Lodge, several lodges of this rite began to form in Paris and the French provinces.

On 25 May 2000, the National Lodge of Instruction and Demonstration of the Standard Scottish Rite was established in France. This event marks the date of official recognition of the Standard Scottish Rite within the French National Grand Lodge.

In the Province of Brie Champagne:

In the Province of Neuilly-Bineau:

In the Province of Paris Grande Arche:

- Bannockburn No. 1314
- Highlanders No. 1426

A regular meeting in a Standard Scottish Rite lodge includes the opening of the First Degree, a change of degree, the reception of visitors, the dispatch of administrative matters, and the closing. During the meeting, there is no influence or discussion of alchemical, chivalric, or hermetic themes, as in the rites practised in continental Europe.

The apron of a practising Mason of the Standard Scottish Rite is made with tartan fabric edging from the royal family of the Stuarts.

Despite the evident preponderance over the practice of symbolic degrees, the Standard Scottish Rite operates with four degrees, these being the three universally accepted symbolic degrees, and includes a fourth degree called the ‘Degree of the Mark’, the latter being governed by Mark lodges, under the patronage (not direct jurisdiction) of the Grand Lodge of Scotland. These Mark lodges are, in a sense, administered by the same lodge of symbolic degrees where they reside.

The Mark Degree of the Standard Scottish Rite is essentially similar to the degrees of the same name practised in the York or American Rite and its counterpart in England.
To open a Mark Lodge, first the symbolic lodge is opened in the usual manner and the degree of Fellow Craft is conferred. At this point, those who do not hold this degree, including master masons, withdraw, and the degree of Markman is conferred.

This fourth degree could be considered a ‘Masonic coelacanth’, inherited from the times of rivalry between the “Ancient” and ‘Modern’ English Masons in the second half of the 18th century.

For Freemasons of the Standard Scottish Rite, the Mark Degree is not a high degree, but a collateral degree, administered in a similar way to the degree of Master Installed in English Freemasonry.

It can be concluded that the Standard Scottish Rite, together with the Irish Rite, are the rites that most closely resemble the pure forms of Freemasonry at the end of the 17th century.

EL RITO ESCOCÉS ESTÁNDAR

El Rito Escocés Estándar (o Rito Estándar de Escocia, como se le llama en Francia), es un rito cristiano de influencia católica y presbiteriana, que no podemos encasillar en los grupos familiares que se sugieren en esta investigación y al contrario, lo podemos ubicar Rito Escocés Estándar como un rito de condiciones singulares en función de sus orígenes, objetivos y características rituales.

Este rito es usado principalmente por la Gran Logia de Escocia y podríamos apreciar como su más notable particularidad, que es el sistema masónico actual más apegado a la instrucción de los tiempos operativos de principios del siglo XVII, de las prácticas ritualísticas semioperativas ashmoleanas de la segunda mitad del siglo XVII y las preandersonianas de principios del siglo XVIII.

Con anterioridad al Rito Escocés Estándar, se practica ron algunos rituales aproximadamente a partir de 1736. El origen de estas ceremonias se atribuye a las logias de Edimburgo y sus alrededores, quienes lo practicaban informalmente ya desde mediados del siglo XVII.

Además de su práctica en Escocia, existen varias logias del Rito Escocés Estándar en Francia, bajo la jurisdicción de la Gran Logia Nacional Francesa y es practicado por la Logia La Lumiere N° 42, en Medio Oriente, bajo la jurisdicción de la Gran Logia de Israel.

Originalmente solo se practicaban en idioma inglés y ha sido hasta finales del siglo XX en que se empezó a practicar en francés.

El Rito Escocés Estándar, ha sido comúnmente conocido como Scottish Working. El término "estándar" ha sido más que un nombre, un adjetivo calificativo.
Hasta mediados del siglo XX, se practicaban en la Gran Logia de Escocia, varias formas rituales emanadas del mismo origen. La necesidad llevó a buscar un procedimiento ritualístico uniforme o "estandarizado".

Estas prácticas estaban cargadas de una fuerte influencia operativa, generadas en las prácticas propias de la Logia Kilwinning N° 0, fundada en 1598.

La Gran Logia de Escocia se funda el 30 de diciembre de 1736, siendo su primer Gran Maestro el Brigadier de la Real Compañía de arqueros, Sir William St. Clair de Rosslyn, quien a propósito había recibido los grados masónicos el 8 de mayo de ese mismo año. St. Clair poseía por derecho propio, el linaje franquicial para presidir las logias operativas y semioperativas de Escocia y por ello, ostentaba la prerrogativa histórica para gobernar a la masonería simbólica escocesa.

Para garantizar el funcionamiento de las nuevas reglas masónicas, St. Clair renunció a su derecho de heredar el cargo de Gran Maestro de Escocia y se diera paso a modelos democráticos.

Esta designación y ajuste administrativo, creó una evidente conexión entre la masonería operativa y semioperativa del siglo XVII, con la masonería especulativa escocesa del siglo XVIII y con ello el Rito Escocés Estándar recibiría en su seno todo el bagaje cultural y espiritual de las prácticas masónicas originales.

Durante su desarrollo y como uno de los varios antecesores del Rito Escocés Estándar, podemos resaltar al "MacBride Ritual".

MacBride fue Venerable Maestro en 1867, de la Logia Leven St. John (además era miembro dual de la Logia Progreso). En la Logia Leven St. John se utilizaba originalmente un ritual basado en el texto Illustrations of Freemasonry de William Preston. MacBride fue un estudioso del simbolismo y diseñó un sistema propio para su logia, basado en las prácticas escocesas contemporáneas.

En 1899, MacBride sugirió el uso de un grado honorífico en el ritual escocés, llamado "Grado de Muy Excelente Instructor".

En ese año, MacBride publicó el Masonic Instructor, el cual es, según D. Murria Lyon (Gran Secretario de la Gran Logia Unida de Inglaterra y Secretario de la Logia de Estudios Quatuor Coronati N° 2076 de Londres), "un documento de gran calidad".
Las ceremonias establecidas en el Masonic Instructor, conocidas posteriormente como MacBride Ritual, brindaron prácticas rituales, retomadas más adelante en la conformación de las versiones posteriores del ritual escocés, que surgieron durante el siglo XX.

INCURSIÓN DEL RITO ESCOCÉS ESTÁNDAR EN FRANCIA

En el año de 1986, por iniciativa de la Logia Gislebertus N° 478 de Autun, Francia, se propuso a la Gran Logia Nacional Francesa, una traducción propia, partiendo de las prácticas reconocidas en Escocia, con la cual se unifican tres documentos:

Una sesión ordinaria en una logia del Rito Escocés Estándar, incluye apertura en Primer Grado, cambio de grado, recepción de visitantes, despacho de asuntos administrativos y clausura. Durante la sesión no se aprecia la influencia o el manejo de temas alquimistas, caballerescos o hermetistas, como en los ritos practicados en Europa continental.

El mandil del masón practicante del Rito Escocés Estándar, es elaborado con bordes de tela tartán de la familia real de los estuardos.

A pesar de la evidente preponderancia sobre la práctica de los grados simbólicos, el Rito Escocés Estándar funciona con cuatro grados, siendo éstos, los tres simbólicos universalmente aceptados, e incluyen un cuarto grado llamado "Grado de la Marca", siendo éste último gobernado por logias de la Marca, bajo el patrocinio (no jurisdicción directa) de la Gran logia de escocia. Estas logias de la Marca están en cierto modo, administradas por la misma logia de grados simbólicos donde aquellas residen.

El Grado de la Marca del Rito Escocés Estándar es en esencia similar a los grados homónimos que se practican en el Rito York o Americano y de su similar en Inglaterra.
Para abrir una Logia de la Marca, primero se abre la logia simbólica en forma ordinaria y se pasa al grado de Compañero. En este momento se pasa del Grado de Compañero al Grado de la Marca, retirándose aquellos que no posean este grado, incluyendo a maestros masones.

Podría considerarse este cuarto grado como un "Celacanto masónico", heredado de los tiempos de rivalidad entre los "Antiguos" y los "Modernos" masones ingleses, en la segunda mitad del siglo XVIII.

Para los masones del Rito Escocés Estándar, el Grado de la Marca no es un alto grado, sino un grado colateral, administrado en forma similar al caso del grado de Maestro instalado en la masonería inglesa.

Se puede establecer como conclusión, que el Rito Escocés Estándar, junto con el Rito Irlandés, son los ritos que más se aproximan a las formas puras de la masonería de finales del siglo XVII.

90 years ago, on 17 August 1935, the National Socialists banned Freemasonry in Germany, considering it a ‘secret conspiratorial society’. The so-called ‘dark age’ began. WDR-Zeitzeichen spoke on ARD radio with the great regional speaker Br. Werner H. Heussinger, co-author of the book ‘Freimaurer in Deutschland zwischen den Weltkriegen: Verfolgt, verboten, wiederauferstanden’ (Freemasons in Germany between the World Wars: Persecuted, Banned, Resurrected), about the background and Nazi propaganda, some of which is still valid today.

Ultimately, it is thanks to Leo Müffelmann that the Masonic light never went out during the dark days of National Socialism and survived in Palestine, from where it was reintroduced into German Freemasonry in 1949.

Who was Leo Müffelmann?

Brother Werner H. Heussinger:

Leo Müffelmann is a figure largely unknown to most people outside Freemasonry. This is unfair, as it is partly thanks to him that Freemasonry exists in Germany in its current form. Leo Müffelmann navigated the tensions of the Weimar Republic between nascent National Socialism, humanism and liberalism. At a time when one wrong word could quickly threaten one's very existence, he remained true to his convictions.

During the depression and social darkness that hung over Germany, he followed his own path and simply refused to be defeated. Ultimately, he paid for this with his life: he died in 1934 as a result of the ill-treatment he suffered during his stay in the Sonnenburg concentration camp. However, his legacy is immortal.

If one wanted to characterise Leo Müffelmann's programme in two words, they would be: peace and freedom. These concepts permeated his life and he subordinated all his actions to them. Even his 1902 doctoral thesis in philosophy dealt with the question ‘The problem of free will in modern German philosophy’.

He himself grew up in a bourgeois and liberal family; his father Ludwig was already politically active before the First World War and, after the war, was an active member of the DDP (German Democratic Party), which was considered left-wing at the time. Leo did not become actively involved in politics, but he did join the Freemasons. In 1913, his father Ludwig admitted him to the ‘Humanitas’ lodge in Berlin, and a year later he took part in the war.

Why were peace and freedom so important to Leo Müffelmann?

Brother Werner H. Heussinger:

As an officer, Leo Müffelmann (private photo: Leo Müffelmann as a lieutenant, 1913) not only saw his men die, but after the war he also saw what became of the veterans. It is therefore not surprising that he saw the need to commit to peace at a very early stage, as many soldiers on the front understandably did. He believed that the task was to move ever closer to the idea of “eternal peace”, as Kant had formulated it, even when the political situations of the moment seemed to make this impossible. Leo Müffelmann summed it up in an article in 1916:

But even if these details do not hold up, this does not necessarily undermine the general idea of “eternal peace”. It is precisely the fact that this idea is emphasised above historical conditions that makes it valuable. 'Eternal peace' is not something that can or should be introduced overnight. Kant does not want this either. In this sense, he is not a utopian dreamer. He himself sees this as one of the “most difficult problems of the human race”. “Eternal peace” is rather “an idea”, a task that, solved little by little, constantly approaches its goal."

[1]In Freemasonry, he saw the tool to work towards this goal. Perhaps it can be said that here he already formulated what would drive him throughout his life: working for peace and understanding between peoples; Freemasonry as a means, as a precursor to politics; individual brothers, through their Masonic work, as a model for this goal. For him, freedom remained a prerequisite.

What exactly did Leo Müffelmann do?

Br. Werner H. Heussinger:

His commitment to peace (private photo: Leo Müffelmann, undated, early 1930s) did not resonate greatly with German Freemasonry at the time, following the peace imposed by the Treaty of Versailles. Many Freemasons, and in particular the grand masters – at that time there were ten grand lodges in Germany – increasingly regarded him as a ‘burden’, partly out of conviction and partly out of fear of reprisals. Müffelmann was often even considered a ‘traitor’. This is partly why they were glad when he left German Freemasonry in 1928. But Leo Müffelmann had a plan: he joined in Vienna and founded lodges in exile in Berlin under the tutelage of the Austrian Grand Lodge in Vienna. This Grand Lodge subsequently founded the Symbolic Grand Lodge of Germany in 1930, which saw a huge increase in membership; of course, Leo Müffelmann was not the only Freemason in Germany who was concerned about the development of German Freemasonry. Immediately after its foundation, the Grand Lodge had 27 lodges and more than 1,000 members.
This Grand Lodge was the vehicle that allowed Freemasonry to be established in Palestine and perpetuate the light of German Freemasonry there. Throughout the war, the Symbolic Grand Lodge of Germany was able to work in exile ‘without disruption, with the authorisation of the Government’. [1] Thus, together with the Grand Lodge of Hamburg, whose Masonic light was brought to Valparaíso (Chile) in 1935, it was the only German Masonic Grand Lodge that existed after the National Socialist ban and symbolically preserved the Masonic light during National Socialism. The Symbolic Grand Lodge of Germany in exile merged with the Grand Lodge of Israel in November 1949.

Heussinger, coautor del libro «Freimaurer in Deutschland zwischen den Weltkriegen: Verfolgt, verboten, wiederauferstanden» (Los masones en Alemania entre las dos guerras mundiales: perseguidos, prohibidos, resucitados), sobre los antecedentes y la propaganda nazi, que en parte sigue vigente en la actualidad.

En última instancia, es gracias a Leo Müffelmann que la luz masónica nunca se apagó durante la época oscura del nacionalsocialismo y sobrevivió en Palestina, desde donde volvió a introducirse en la masonería alemana en 1949.

¿Quién era Leo Müffelmann?

Hno. Werner H. Heussinger:

Leo Müffelmann es un personaje bastante desconocido para la mayoría de las personas ajenas a la masonería. Injustamente, ya que es en parte gracias a él que la masonería existe en Alemania en su forma actual. Leo Müffelmann se movió en el campo de tensión de la República de Weimar entre el naciente nacionalsocialismo, el humanismo y el liberalismo. En una época en la que una palabra equivocada podía amenazar rápidamente la propia existencia, se mantuvo fiel a sus convicciones.

Durante la depresión y la oscuridad social que se cernía sobre Alemania, siguió su propio camino y simplemente no se dejó vencer. Finalmente, pagó por ello con su vida: murió en 1934 como consecuencia de los malos tratos sufridos durante su estancia en el campo de concentración de Sonnenburg. Sin embargo, su legado es inmortal.

Si se quisiera caracterizar en dos palabras lo que era programático para Leo Müffelmann, serían estas: paz y libertad. Estos conceptos impregnaron su vida y subordinó todas sus acciones a ellos. Incluso su tesis doctoral en filosofía de 1902 versó sobre la cuestión «El problema del libre albedrío en la filosofía alemana moderna».

Él mismo creció en el seno de una familia burguesa y liberal; su padre Ludwig ya era activo políticamente antes de la Primera Guerra Mundial y, tras esta, fue miembro activo del partido DDP (Partido Democrático Alemán), considerado entonces de izquierdas. Leo no se involucró activamente en la política, pero sí en la masonería. En 1913, su padre Ludwig lo admitió en la logia «Humanitas» de Berlín y, un año después, participó en la guerra.

¿Por qué eran tan importantes para Leo Müffelmann la paz y la libertad?

Como oficial, Leo Müffelmann (foto privada: Leo Müffelmann como teniente, 1913) no solo vio morir a sus hombres, sino que después de la guerra también vio en qué se convirtieron los veteranos. Por lo tanto, no es de extrañar que desde muy temprano viera la necesidad de apostar por la paz, como comprensiblemente hicieron muchos soldados del frente. Consideraba que la tarea consistía en acercarse cada vez más a la idea de la «paz eterna», tal y como la había formulado Kant, incluso cuando las situaciones políticas del momento parecían hacerlo imposible. Leo Müffelmann lo resumió en un artículo de 1916:

«Pero incluso si estos detalles no se sostienen, esto no tiene por qué socavar la idea general de la «paz eterna». Es precisamente el hecho de destacar esta idea por encima de las condiciones históricas lo que la hace valiosa. La «paz eterna» no es algo que se pueda o se deba introducir de la noche a la mañana. Kant tampoco lo quiere. En este sentido, no es un soñador utópico. Él mismo ve aquí uno de los «problemas más difíciles de la especie humana». La «paz eterna» es más bien «una idea», es una tarea que, resuelta poco a poco, se acerca constantemente a su objetivo».

[1]En la masonería vio la herramienta para trabajar en pos de este objetivo. Quizás se pueda decir que aquí ya formuló lo que le impulsaría durante toda su vida: el trabajo por la paz y el entendimiento entre los pueblos; la masonería como medio, como precursora de la política; los hermanos individuales, a través de su trabajo masónico, como modelo para este objetivo. Para él, la libertad seguía siendo un requisito previo.

¿Qué hizo Leo Müffelmann concretamente?

Su compromiso con la paz (foto privada: Leo Müffelmann, sin fecha, principios de la década de 1930) no tuvo gran resonancia en la masonería alemana de la época, tras la paz dictada por el Tratado de Versalles. Muchos masones, y en particular los grandes maestros —en aquella época había diez grandes logias en Alemania—, lo consideraban cada vez más una «carga», en parte por convicción y en parte por miedo a las represalias. Müffelmann era a menudo considerado incluso un «traidor». Por eso, en parte, se alegraron cuando en 1928 se despidió de la masonería alemana. Pero Leo Müffelmann tenía un plan: se afilió en Viena y fundó en Berlín, bajo la tutela de la Gran Logia Austriaca de Viena, logias en el exilio. Esta fundó posteriormente, en 1930, la Gran Logia Simbólica de Alemania, que registró un enorme aumento en el número de miembros; por supuesto, Leo Müffelmann no era el único masón en Alemania que consideraba preocupante el desarrollo de la masonería alemana. Inmediatamente después de su fundación, la Gran Logia contaba con 27 logias y más de 1000 miembros.

La Gran Logia Simbólica de Alemania en el exilio se fusionó con la Gran Logia de Israel en noviembre de 1949.

The Swedish Rite is a Masonic rite practised mainly in the Scandinavian countries of Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden. The practice of this rite requires Freemasons to declare themselves Christian. In a nuanced way, it is also practised in Germany and in some lodges outside Scandinavia.

The history of this rite is closely linked to the establishment of Strict Observance in Freemasonry in northern Europe. It was founded on a Christian and Templar basis, established in Sweden in 1759 by Carl Friedrich Eckleff.

Freemasonry was introduced to Sweden by Count Wrede-Spare, a cavalry officer who had been received as an Apprentice in Paris on 4 May 1731, Fellow on 16 November 1731 and Master on 6 May 1733. The first meeting of a lodge with its own name took place at the home of Baron Gabriel Sack on 17 March 1735. King Frederick I banned Freemasonry by decree on 21 October 1738, a decree that was repealed a few years later.

On 13 January 1752, Count Knut Carlsonn Posse founded the ‘St. John the Helper’ lodge, which declared itself the Mother Lodge of Sweden and, with this title, was authorised to create other lodges in the Kingdom of Sweden. The following year, Baron Charles-Frederic Scheffer, who had been initiated on 14 May 1737 in Paris at the Coustos-Villeroy Lodge, was elected Grand Master. He was in possession of a document dated 1737, sent to him by the Earl of Darwentwater and now preserved in Stockholm.

This document paraphrases the Constitutions of 1723, but affirms that Freemasonry would be exclusively Christian in character. The French rituals used in the early days were revised in 1756. In 1761, the Grand Lodge of Sweden was founded. Its first Grand Master was Baron Scheffer, and Carl Friedrich Eckleff was Assistant Grand Master. Duke Carl Von Södermanland, a member of the Strict Observance and future King Charles XIII of Sweden, became Grand Master in 1774 and undertook the organisation of the Swedish Rite, building on the foundations of a chapter of high Masonic degrees founded in Stockholm by Eckleff on 25 December 1759.

He carried out revisions of the rite in 1780 and 1800, when the fundamental constitution of the Order was established. The Swedish Rite declares itself to be fundamentally Christian. It is steeped in Rosicrucianism, Kabbalah and Theosophy, and in some respects recalls the doctrine of Swedenborg. Following a report in 1828, its objective was defined as the knowledge of God through the recognition of the divine spirit that each person carries within themselves, through the acceptance of the Trinitarian dimension and through faith in Jesus Christ.

It is organised into ten degrees, distributed in a triptych structure:

There are approximately 60 Freemasons who currently hold this degree. In 1811, King Karl established the Royal Order of King Karl XIII. It is a civil order granted by the King only to Freemasons of the 11th degree, with a limited number of 33. However, it is not a Masonic degree.

El Rito Sueco es un rito masónico practicado principalmente en los países escandinavos: Dinamarca, Finlandia, Islandia, Noruega y Suecia. La práctica de este rito exige que el francmasón se declare cristiano. De manera matizada, se trabaja también en Alemania y en algunas logias fuera de Escandinavia.

La historia de este rito está fuertemente vinculada a la implantación de la Estricta Observancia en la francmasonería de la Europa del norte. Fue fundado sobre una base cristiana y templaria, instalada en Suecia en 1759 por Carl Friedrich Eckleff.

El duque Carl Von Södermanland, miembro de la Estricta Observancia y futuro rey Carlos XIII de Suecia, se convertirá en Gran Maestro en 1774 y emprenderá la organización del Rito Sueco retomando las bases de un capítulo de altos grados masónicos fundado en Estocolmo por Eckleff el 25 de diciembre de 1759. Llevará a cabo revisiones del rito en 1780 y en 1800, fecha en que fue establecida la constitución fundamental de la Orden.

El Rito Sueco se declara fundamentalmente cristiano. Está impregnado de rosacrucismo, de cábala y de teosofía, y en algunos aspectos recuerda la doctrina de Swedenborg. Tras un informe de 1828, se asigna como objetivo el conocimiento de Dios por el reconocimiento del espíritu divino que lleva cada uno en sí, por la acogida de la dimensión trinitaria y por la fe en Jesucristo.

Hay aproximadamente 60 masones que tienen este grado actualmente. En 1811 el Rey Karl estableció la orden real de King Karl XIII. Es una orden civil otorgada por el Rey, solamente a francmasones del grado XI con un número limitado a 33. No es, sin embargo, un grado masónico.
