Sonnet 056 - LVI
Sweet love, renew thy force; be it not said
Thy edge should blunter be than appetite,
Which but to-day by feeding is allay'd,
To-morrow sharpened in his former might:
So, love, be thou, although to-day thou fill
Thy hungry eyes, even till they wink with fulness,
To-morrow see again, and do not kill
The spirit of love, with a perpetual dulness.
Let this sad interim like the ocean be
Which parts the shore, where two contracted new
Come daily to the banks, that when they see
Return of love, more blest may be the view;
As call it winter, which being full of care,
Makes summer's welcome, thrice more wished, more rare.

My wife and I talk a lot on Telegram. Most of it is "I love you". I wrote a bot which auto-replied to "I love you" with "I love you too" after a short delay. Turns out she did the same thing. I finished work and there were 5,000 unread "I love you" and "I love you too" messages.

Well...the US 'contended with workers' after murderous strike-breaking and after a depression that threatened a Russia-style revolution. THAT's what happened. And as for 'kicking Nazi asses"; #Britain, #Canada, and the Commonwealth were in to it more than 2 years before the US and that same Russia a year and a half. Oh, and btw; Russia suffered about 20M dead. I'd say most of the ass-kicking was by Russia...with a little help from the Commonwealth.

A media circus?
Because you tried extorting the leader of a war-torn country... who became a global hero due to his strong, principled resistance?

And you were rejected, with everyone calling Trump venal, evil, a Russian stooge and incompetent as a result?

Gee. That's too bad.

This speech by Illinois Governor JB Pritzker is excellent. It discusses the rise of Hitler and the Nazis, thwarted efforts of Neo-Nazis to intimidate Jews in Skokie, Illinois; clearly illuminates that Trump and Musk are attacking programs that feed people and cover their health care; and calls on all of us to be ready to fight for a better America.

Trump's foreign policy has always amounted to extorting trade partners and sucking up to other authoritarians. His "isolationism" is laziness and a desire to foist problems onto other countries. Nevertheless, he fetishizes American military power and relies on it as a backstop for his threats. It's interesting then, in the abstract, that he seems so determined to undermine US influence by drawing down its economic and political entanglement and by letting Musk go after the defense budget.

in reply to Frank Bennett

It'll be interesting if Elon Musk does try to take a hatchet to defense projects. There's this recurring pattern with him where he makes bold claims to expertise in a niche area and craven pundits go, "just look at this guy Elon he's a total genius, wow," and experts in the area go, "jesus, this guy's completely full of shit, and here's why." With impact on red-state employment it might (FINALLY) prompt congressional hearings, which might at least put a small dent in the carnage?

Musk:
“We’ve got people in there that are 150 years old. Now, do you know anyone who’s 150? I don’t, OK.”

Reason:
“Under ISO 8601, a missing value for a date is coded as May 20, 1875, because that was the date of an international standards-setting conference held in Paris, known as the “Convention du Mètre.”

For that reason, under some coding systems, a missing value for a date will default to 1875 — which in the year 2025 produces a round figure of 150.”

What a clown. 🤡

It’s been a tough year so far but I really find joy in the community here on Mastodon and the larger Fediverse.

There’s a satisfying DIY punk rock feeling to it all, as if I’m sticking it to dystopian billionaires every time I boost someone’s Mastodon post or fave someone’s Pixelfed image or try out some new Fedi app or follow some interesting stranger on some weird platform I’ve never heard of but can still interact with because it’s federated.

It’s what the internet is supposed to feel like.

it's really cruel. I've no doubt cutting all these jobs will make it look in the balance books like the US government is less expensive to run but the nature in which hundreds of thousands of people are being terminated without warning or respect is really inhumane. I think people working in the tech industry (of which I am one) are used to precarious contracts and sudden lay offs but people choose to work in the public sector and third sector in the hope they will get treated as humans
