Hey #OSM and #osmand community. My sighted partner and I are getting into osmand. Paired it with #BRouter for the rides with our tandem-bike.
This morning we were wondering if there is a navigation profile or if we could easily create it which allows routing by food which prioritizes street crossings with tactile markers and/or audible trafic lights.
In my opinion as a #blind pedestrian that would be a very nice thing to have.

Allerdings, ja: MS hat über die Jahrzehnte perfektioniert, ihre Produkte miteinander zu "verzahnen" und perfekt auf die Bedürfnisse/Anforderungen in Unternehmen abzustimmen.
Dadurch haben sie einen massiven Vorsprung (von quasi unbeschränkten finanziellen Mitteln und Person mal abgesehen).
Gerade, wenn man bedenkt, dass manche Amerikaner bei uns ein Demokratiedefizit auszumachen glauben?
Andererseits, vielleicht ist eine Sperre ja auch die Lösung/Massnahme, die es braucht?

My favorite pet peeve currently with Microsoft is they show dialogs with a cursor, even when focus is not there and you cannot type in the window
Actually it will take multiple seconds from selected to being able to input anything
Windows is so fucked up.
Teams is the worst though, always "look at this new silly function", and ohh you joined another team, here are frickin all of the hints and shite again

# Switching to #linux was the best decision of my life, and i'm not exaggerating.
I've learned more in the past four years than in seven years of using #windows. What i've learned is valuable and useful. And i regret nothing but that i didn't switch earlier.
Switching to linux doesn't have to be fun. It will be exhausting, time consuming and frustrating at most times. And this is exactly what you should want.
Trying, breaking and fixing things are essential parts of your learning process. Daily driving linux is a daily learning experience.
I have a #learningdisorder which made me feel useless to the #IT industry. This year i had an internship which changed that completely. My #impostersyndrome and doubts are gone. And i can't even describe how good this feels.

TIL: Mein Blutdruck-Meßgerät ist zu freundlich. Das in der Hausarzt-Praxis zeigte bei einer Parallel-Messung beim ersten Wert 32 mehr an.
IOW: Der Blutdrucksenker bewirkte bisher gar nichts, ich bin immer noch beim ersten Wert bei > 200.

Wenn ich ehrlich bin, dann wäre das auch mein erster Gedanke gewesen, warum sie Dich trotz (anscheinend) blutdrucksenkende Medikamente nicht a) sofort zum Kardiologen oder b) in einer Klinik unter bringt.

@jackemled What my Glasshole script did/does is send specially crafted deauthentication packets, pretending to be the device the glasses are connected to. This effectively disables most functionality, alongside any streaming from the glasses to a remote or local service. I am curious to see what can be done with the Meta glasses. If they use WiFi, it is positive.

My "vintage audio" friend group doesn't need to know my "gay otaku" friend group. There are appropriate individual fora for each.
The big lacking space is that nobody built a decent family-oriented community space. Meta did it by accident by onboarding everyone, but there's not a friendly story for self-hosting and no non-skeevy commercial play.

I don't have, never had, and will never have a Meta account.
I only ever used Facebook from this company which I created an account for long before I got educated enough on data safety and privacy conservation.
I am glad I successfully deleted all my data before the AI boom. That is not to say I have not caused any harm - the content algorithms are the very same kind of data models and have been in place long before, they just weren't marketed as AI.
We need to starve them of data, but masses remain ignorant of the threat at hand.

I do this through nikau.io. 10's of 1000's of defenders of human rights and the environment use infrastructure we have deployed.
But more generally, any shift should start with education. A part of that can be show-and-tell of alternatives, alongside positive stories from those that have migrated
My friend had her facebook account stolen...
...there is literally no way to contact a human at Meta (as of a few years back). The only way this could be done, is if you spent $800 buying oculus.
Why would anyone be on that platform is beyond me.

I'm trying my hardest not to use any AI, because I don't believe there's an ethical way to use it considering the amount of damage and harm it creates.
One thing I'm noticing lately is AI popping up in things that I use without the option to opt out*.
Can people please leave comments about where they've noticed AI happening, so that I can also be aware of those things.. like it took me a minute to realise that Co-pilot was actually AI and not just a fancy form of spellcheck, I've just heard about Duolingo and Audible, and the Ask Tiktok search thing is also AI.
What else do I need to be aware of?

It's especially shitty because a lot of these services are or were disability access features first.
Recommendation systems used by Spotify, Netflix etc. often use machine learning, which is lumped under the umbrella of "AI".

They're not like the LLMs (Large Language Models) like Co-Pilot, ChatGPT, Gemini etc) that have become the default definition of AI at the moment.
There is also types of AI in how most smart phones take and process photos that can sometimes result in some weird results.
So avoiding all varieties of AI is almost impossible. Avoiding LLMs is easier in web search. I use DuckDuckGo as my default search engine and there's an opt out of its use of LLM. However I think all browsers are gonna imbed LLMs soon (Brave does but again there's an opt out). Firefox will prob soon.
So AI/machine learning may not necessarily be a bad thing depending on its intended application, source data, who creates it and who is the intended user/target, and any power imbalance between those two.

I have a different kind of hell. But at least not the corporate created late stage capitalism dystopia one.
I think we could fix a lot of this with a protocol for fiat transfer. making it super easy for people to give a little directly to every app and service they use and media they consume, would obsolete paywalls. I know it's been tried before but always with middlemen instead of bank to bank, and never alongside (and perhaps integrated with) decentralized social media.

When it comes to self-hosting (and my own slice of "digital sovereignty"), I'm often drawn to try the #Nextcloud app for the specific need first.
However, quite often, these are not the best of breed for the given task - and it's not balanced by integration benefits between the apps either.
That's actually quite sad, and I think NC is losing a *lot* of potential by not curating and guiding the app ecosystem better.

Don't get me started on the multiple ways of interacting with photos.
I like Nextcloud for what it does, but I'm coming around to the idea that what I really want the best-of-breed stack behind SSO.
@ainmosni Same. I compared Immich vs Photos, Memories last year and ... yeah.
Why even have two competing photo apps (or more, probably)? A good steward would steer that ecosystem better.
I recognize Nextcloud for the huge strides they've made, but it so often falls short on basics and good integration while chasing the hype.
Agreed, there's a few apps that are great, but most are just janky. I do love Nextcloud for its core capabilities, and use it mainly for that. I also think that maybe the apps are a bit too ambitious and would prefer it if the focus was more on easy integration between components.
For instance, Immich using Nextcloud as a storage backend would be nice, especially if they both use the same OIDC auth.
As it stands you're right, but there's no reason why immich can't store the raw photos in nextcloud and keep the metadata itself.
But with integration like that, it will look a lot like how google photos puts all the photos into the drive. Of course that could indeed be a virtual filesystem in nextcloud like you describe.
My point was more that instead of writing a full blown app in a relatively limited environment like Nextcloud, having great apps able to interact better would make for a much nicer experience.
@ainmosni You could include your Nextcloud share as an external library in Immich.
I'm not sure this would a great win for anything though; there's no win to it relative to storing the files directly to local storage for Immich, but additional complexity (in my opinion).
But yes, indeed, the "better interaction between great apps" rather than "build everything into one framework" is the sentiment I can get behind 😀
Same with the server side in my experience.
Nextcloud is a neat platform for immediately disabling / uninstalling the default apps and install Collabora, Memories, SnappyMail etc. to make it usable.

Das Foto habe ich in deinem Feed gefunden. Zwar nicht direkt von der Demo, aber die Damen sind sehr gut zu erkennen. Hier habe ich einfach die Galerie-App von Samsung/Android genommen und die Gesichter mit Emojis übermalt.
Bei Menschenmassen ist es schwieriger, aber zumindest im Vordergrund kannst du genau so vorgehen. Personen im Hintergrund sind durch die schlechte Qualität etwas geschützt.

One of the most important things I learned in computer science major was the projects tend to get stuck at the 90% completion stage, for reasons. One of the reasons is, that's the easy part
I've taken this forward in my non-computer life, to tell myself, I will just do the easy 90%. Or sometimes the easy 70%. The rest might be nice to do, but it's not as necessary
It takes 2 minutes to wipe down the kitchen counters and get them 90% clean. The other 10% would take what, half an hour?

There are still unnecessary sins, like throwing binary data in managed lists. Which funnily enough is something AI likes to do. *Not* doing that doesn't require more work though.
Also common among Java devs is just annotating your class a bit to be serializable, rather than building a binary or text format.
Config files in XML are bad enough, but nothing beats java.lang.Serializable network packets. And nowadays you won't even get a CVE for that...
This reminded me of Stephen Colbert’s conversation with Suleika Jaoud, who objects to the oft heard advice “Live every day like it’s your last.” Rather, she advises living every day like it’s your *first*, which I think is marvelous. The entire conversation is well worth 9 minutes.

I mean, we try to use this principle in work (software dev) that we need to get SOMETHING in place, that does at least something. And we can then improve and modify and optimise.
In so many aspects of life, this it true. Do something. Something is more than nothing. And don't let the perfect stop the good enough.
Interestingly, I was told this also in my PhD study - there is a level you need to get to, and no more. You don't need to be perfect. You need to achieve a specific level.
If you live in a castle, you will be glad you put in the work on the foundation when the barbarians show up at your gate. If your castle is only in the planning stages, you'll be glad you got your boots on, so you can run for the hills.
So, IOW its 10% or 100% for me. nothing in between.
I often end up with 10%+10%+10% taking 150% of normal time to do. ....

So just start, no more is needed. You don't have to do it well, or right or wholeheartedly, and you are allowed to abandon, unfinish and ignore it, you just have to start.
