Starting to explore migrating away from corporate social media like Facebook or Twitter, to the fediverse. The biggest obstacle is of course the network effect: I have a group of friends on Facebook, we all follow each other, will they migrate with me? I guess I'll find out. I am doing this gradually, first migrating to the fediverse (links in my profile), and starting a blog at write.as/leastaction/ with some longer pieces about topics that interest me: the meaning of democracy is a big one for me these days. And yes, the rise of oligarchic despots around the world.

What's a good app for this on android? I'm currently using fedilab but I don't like having mastodon using the same app as this for autism related reasons.

I'm experimenting with using the "Raccoon for Friendica" (via F-Droid), and also the one you're using, "Fedilab". I'm still learning to navigate, so I'm also using Firefox ("Add to Home page") from my smartphone (this is from desktop, though). Maybe the last one is worth a try for you - just go via a web browser?

So far I like it! Very customizable. It's nice having control over the content I see. And it's got a bit of that MySpace vibe with the BBcode. Switching up my background is fun.

Lemmy is great for finding different communities that interest you. Friendica needs some work in that department, but a great way to start is to follow hashtags of your interest. They get added to saved searchs, and then show up in your latest posts feed.
I want to find my sister and husband not strangers. I am going to give this platform one more day to work, but if I cannot connect with people I know It is not working.
Have you tried inviting your friends? We all kind of need to migrate together, with our social circles for it to work. If people are not on here already, you will not find them.
(Btw, they do not have to be on Friendica for you to follow them. They can be on Mastodon or any other federated site and should be searchable and able to see their posts once you follow them.)
I am a bit lost so far. Making content sounds more involved than just posting thoughts like I have done on FB. I am not sure how I want to build this new world!
