Militant Kindergarten is a 15-week seminar that is part of a larger project of militant formation through group study, analysis, and discussion. During Militant Kindergarten, we read and study especifismo, a revolutionary current of anarchism coming from Latin America that, today, has become relevant around the world. We do this primarily by reading Social Anarchism and Organisation by the FARJ (the Anarchist Federation of Rio de Janeiro) and our own condensed version of the text called “104 Steps to Recovery of the Social Vector”. By reading the main text on our own and the abridged version together, we aim to refine and develop our understanding of anarchist theory, strategy, and militancy. From our close readings, we plan to discuss precise expressions, concepts, and theories.

Since it's the last day of the Biden presidency, I thought it would be appropriate today to look back at the last four years and do a bit of a retrospective on Biden's term overall. This is the last time I plan to talk about Joe Biden for quite some time, so I'm not going to pull any punches.
It is easy to frame Biden's shortcomings as president as a series of failures and inadequacies, things he wasn't able to do or was prevented from doing by circumstance or Republican opposition. Biden himself has often retreated to this narrative, which helps square how frequently he promised one thing and then failed to deliver. He'd love to cancel all student debt for everyone, but Presidents don't have the power to do that. Did you know BlueSky and Mastodon users can follow each other? They can, through something called a Bridge.

And while the big rush from both Twitter and Facebook at the moment is to BlueSky, I’m also picking up a bunch of new people on Mastodon, which I continue to recommend preferentially.

Now, in some ways, Mastodon is not as turnkey as BlueSky. But the Federation – of which Mastodon is the largest member – has things like groups, longer posts, custom emojis, picture and video services, and most of all didn’t just get another $700M of the same kind of venture capital vulture investment that BlueSky just got, which is in these current days always the vector insert for enshittification.

Don’t get me wrong: BlueSky is better than Meta or Twitter, so if you’re leaving to go there, please, keep doing that! It’s much better, at least for now! And it sends a market message even if BlueSky gets tanked later.

But if you’re willing to be a tiny bit more adventurous, there

And the even better news is that BlueSky and Mastodon can interoperate via a bridge, which means yes, if you go to Mastodon and some of your friends go to BlueSky, you can still follow each other and keep in contact without having two accounts.

Isn’t Federation amazing? With some help, it even works with BlueSky. Here’s how:

FIRST, you have to turn on the Mastodon-Bluesky bridge. This is what joins the networks and lets them talk to one another. Turning it on is one action, whether you’re on Mastodon or BlueSky.

If you’re on MASTODON:

Follow the account @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy
(If you don’t know how to do that: copy @bsky.brid.gy@bsky.brid.gy into the search box, hit enter. The profile will come up; click “follow.”)

If you’re on BLUESKY:

Follow the account “@ap.brid.gy“
(If you don’t know how to find an account, here’s a direct link to its profile:
bsky.app/profile/ap.brid.gy
Click on the link, then click on the “follow” button at that page.)

Done.

Now, this doesn’t follow any specific people! It just turns on the bridge, which allows you to follow people on the other service, and allows people on the other service to follow you.

Unless you change accounts, you only have to do this once. It’s once per account you own. You don’t have to do each time you want to follow someone or anything like that. It’s one and done.

After you’ve turned on the bridge by doing this, you’re ready to talk on both networks with the same account.

NOW IT’S TIME FOR SECOND BREAKFAST

Okay, so you’re set up to follow people on the opposite service! Here’s how to do that.

If you’re on MASTODON (or anywhere in the Federation, really):

Accounts on BlueSky generally look like this when seen from Mastodon:
@[BlueSkyAccountName]@bsky.brid.gy
As an example, let’s take PopeHat, who is on BlueSky. His account is @kenwhite.bsky.social, or maybe just @kenwhite depending upon how you look at it. All you have to do is add “@bsky.brid.gy” to the BlueSky account name.
From Mastodon, that would be:
@kenwhite.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy
So if you use the Search box on Mastodon to look for:
@kenwhite.bsky.social@bsky.brid.gy
…you’ll find his account profile as seen from Mastodon. Then, you can follow him by clicking the “Follow” button, same as anyone else, and you’re good to go!

If you’re on BLUESKY:

Accounts on Mastodon generally look like this when seen from BlueSky, and I’m sorry but here we go:
@[MastodonUserName].[FullMastodonDomainWithDots].ap.brid.gy
As an example, let’s take me, on Mastodon. My account name is longer than most because when I set it up I was a little bit of a dumbass. It is @moira@mastodon.murkworks.net and on BlueSky, that turns into this:
@moira.mastodon.murkworks.net.ap.brid.gy
That’s unpleasant, and I’m under the impression that BlueSky search is not fond of such constructions sometimes (I could be wrong, someone let me know!), but it should get you a profile you can follow.
However, if it doesn’t, there’s still a way. You can turn that into a profile URL directly, by taking away the “@” sign and adding https://bsky.app/profile/ to the front, so it looks like this:
bsky.app/profile/moira.mastodo…
That will get you the BlueSky version of my Mastodon profile, with a Follow button, which you can use, same as for anyone else. Click on it, and you’re done.
Sorry it’s a bit of a mess, it’s mostly that BlueSky really isn’t so very well set up to handle anything that isn’t BlueSky and while it’ll do it, it’s … a little muddled. One might even say complicated. BUT IT WORKS! So.

Anyway, if you have comments on how I can improve this, please drop ’em. Right now, both services have real advantages over the other, not the least of which being BlueSky’s still-easier startup path and smoother UI, but also not the least of which is that Mastodon is much better at handling non-Mastodon media sources being in your timeline.

(This blog is pretty readable on Mastodon. But on BlueSky, it’s like two lines, some ellipses and a URL. BlueSky posts are so short, honestly, how do you live like that? xD And no custom emojis and no groups and no private lists? People talk about Mastodon being less than complete – and to be clear, it is – but dang, team. xD )

So with Meta (Facebook, Instagram, Threads) changing to Maga and legalising mass harassment of LGBT people and misogyny targeting of women across all its services, if you’re in a mood not to reward that? Well, there’s more than one place you can go without losing all of your friends.

C’mon over. Shit ain’t perfect, but it’s a hell of a lot better here than there.

The week of December 23, FEWSNet, an independently run famine reporting service funded by the United States government, updated its projections for impending famine in northern Gaza. The U.S. Ambassador to Israel publicly criticized the population figures used, and the update promptly disappeared from public view, apparently upon instructions from U.S. government officials.
This recent censorship battle over whether to call starvation in Gaza a famine is compromising United States credibility on issues where the U.S. has led the world for decades. A half-century ago, the U.S. helped forge a global consensus on norms to guide how the world responds to food crises, including that food not be used as a weapon. Now, U.S. officials are censoring independent reporting of starvation in Gaza resulting from Israel withholding food supplies from northern Gaza.
1974 was a crucial year for forging this new consensus. The year started out badly. In one of the low points in the otherwise proud history of U.S. humanitarian assistance, the U.S. Government indeed used food as a weapon, retaliating against the young government of Bangladesh by stopping food aid shipments in the midst of that country’s worst food crisis since independence. As many as 1.5 million people may have starved to death in that famine. US food aid stopped because of a dispute over Bangladesh’s trade relations with Cuba.
This followed on the Nixon/Kissinger policy during that country’s war of independence, three years earlier, of ignoring the terrible civilian human rights abuses and death toll inflicted by the military forces of a U.S. ally. Pakistan was a strong U.S. ally, its president a friend of President Nixon, and Pakistan was in the middle of secretly negotiating the China opening that took place a few months later. U.S. policy was willing to pay the price of a terrible humanitarian disaster inflicted by Pakistan’s army on Bangladesh’s civilian population by a close ally in order for President Nixon to achieve his foreign policy triumph on China.
That earlier Bangladesh disaster was a precursor to the U.S. withholding food aid during the 1974 famine. But the U.S. was not alone in 1974 in pursuing shameful policies that abetted famine. Emperor Haile Salassie’s failure to address or even recognize a famine in Ethiopia led to a Communist takeover there.
But at the end of 1974, the nations of the world represented at the UN’s World Food Conference established a new set of norms, institutions, and aspirations to guide global food security. And three years later, despite then-Secretary of Agriculture Earl Butz’s contention at the 1974 conference that food was a powerful weapon in the U.S. arsenal, the U.S. along with the rest of the world outlawed the use of food as a weapon in protocols to the Geneva Conventions. This norm was recently reinforced by unanimous Security Council resolution (2018), U.S. Senate resolution (2022) and a joint UN communique led by the U.S. (2023).
A decade after that World Food Conference, when Ethiopia faced another famine, these norms were honored by one of America’s staunchest anti-Communist Presidents. President Ronald Reagan, deciding that starving people in Ethiopia would get U.S. food aid in spite of their Communist government, declared that “a hungry child knows no politics.”
That Ethiopian famine was part of a broader African food emergency in the mid-1980s, which led the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) to start the Famine Early Warning System (FEWS). FEWS started as, and remains, an independent analytical and early warning service for the global food and humanitarian community under a series of USAID contract and grant agreements. As a former USAID employee, I frequently relied on FEWS estimates and information during my 38-year career and had close FEWS colleagues over much of that time as well. I know – even in environments of great uncertainty and inadequate data – how carefully and impartially FEWS analysts weigh the information they have access to in making their most informed judgments.
Since its adoption by the UN in 2004, the Integrated Food Security Phase System (IPC) famine scale has been the standard for early warning, and that’s the system used by FEWS in their most recent Gaza update. A FEWS declaration of famine also requires validation by an independent group of global food security experts called a Famine Review Committee. FEWS analysts are careful in using this system and making their assessments because that’s their job, but also because they know that – whenever and wherever they declare conditions approaching famine – powerful people and institutions will attack their analysis, as the U.S. Ambassador to Israel Jack Lew and USAID have just done.
