Musing about Tik Tok

It seems like an absurd joke to me that Tik Tok shut themselves down, practically begging for Vice President Trump's help. Now it seems it's back up and they thank the incoming VP.

I think this post over at Mastodon nailed it.

Halyihev reshared this.

Just told my girlfriend about the fediverse. I think I lost her a bit when I started enumerating all the services I can use here.
I got her back when we discussed how to utilize this for smaller groups to get out of Silicon Hell Valleys grip
in reply to Tameplatap7s

I tend to focus on Mastodon, Friendica, and Pixelfed when I present the Fediverse to people. Anything more than that requires the person having mentioned something specific they want to do, like podcasts or videosharing, the aforementioned ones aren't built for. I believe it helps avoiding paralysis of choice.
in reply to Lemmus

Thats a good point! I guess I just got kinda excited when I discovered all the possibilities, that I didn't recognize when to stop 😀
I think that the use of those three, you mention, should help alot of people feel more at home here

Hello

2025 Goals for Social Media

I plan on using federated and open social media more in 2025. The TikTok ban, the strait up nazification of Twitter and Facebook. It's time to stop trusting these billionaires to protect us.

Bound In Smoke

This is the cover for the WIP (Work in Progress). Bound in Smoke is the first book of a new series for me and a new genre. It's going to be more in the Romantasy genre. My readers know this book is really, really late. I'm in the final stages of tidying things up so I can send it to my editor.

I'll say more about the book in the near future.

Trying to sort out groups...

So, this platform has a pretty good post and friend/follow system, but not sure about groups - it shows the term but I'm just not sure how they work here. Still very new to this whole infrastructure.
in reply to tananda

I have just looked at it a bit myself too, and the way it uses the accounts is technically obvious, but I'm not a huge fan of the UX of it all. Please keep us posted with your experiences, though, I'm sure it's useful for both the old hands and newbies like myself.

Trying out Friendica

I've been looking for a viable Facebook replacement. Nothing FB does is particularly difficult tech-wise - events, photo sharing, video sharing, etc.. and the ActivityPub / federated systems have a lot of promise.

Sadly, the best social sites are essentially just twitter clones. Don't get me wrong, the general concept of twitter like "digital town square" can be really useful social constructs.. However, the "Killer app" for Facebook is the "friend" system.

On the old twitter, and on mastodon and bluesky, it seems like all posts you make are world readable unless you block someone... and anyone can follow you (again unless you explicitly block someone. Blocking is great - I hear xhitter started letting paid accounts adn Elmo override that - what a mess

Anyway, the "killer app" for me is that two-way handshake - I request you as a friend and unless you accept, meaning it's two way consent, you're not a friend.. and I can post stuff that only friends can see...

I really love that feature because it lets people build a bit of a safe bubble.

There's been a LOT of talk about bubbles and how they're bad, and I used to subscribe to that view. However, I've developed a more Nuanced take on that of late - that if your bubble is an opinion / behavior bubble but is grounded in objective fact, then having a bubble can be a net positive.

Not to get too right vs left here but there is a HUGE amount of not just willful but prideful ignorance among a great number of people in the US (and the world but especially the US), and when they're not willing to agree on basic objective facts (I refer you to the "alternative fact" crowd.. ) and building upon a platform of lies and grift.. then yes that bubble is harmful.

However, the level of toxicity in the site formerly known as twitter got so bad, and deliberate changes to the system to amplify hateful voices and make them all but un-ignorable just completely failed the basic mission of what social media can and should be.

So, having a "bubble" where I've carefully curated my friends such that I don't get inundated with random garbage... (I mean sometimes my friends also can credulously share junk too - and the "unfollow" feature allowing me to keep a person I care about on some level in my life but not have to deal with their constant stream of woo or annoying but not toxic shares etc... ) where was I? right... the general idea of being able to ensure that only those people I have some connection to and have approved see my main social content. I post a few things publicly here and there but mostly keep it to friends and thus my FB has been mostly non toxic... The ads and sponsored content, the utterly broken AI powered moderation and fear that even typing certain words like "Garbage" or "Trash" might get one banned ... yeah, that's a problem.. and the recent announcements from FB that they're going to pull back on some of their banning etc.. may sound good except when you see it's politically targeted - if I call someone mentally ill for believing some kooky religiously inspired conspiracy or hater I could still get a ban but someone calling LGBTQIA+ people mentally ill is now OK (even though pretty much the entire Western Worlds psychological associations agree that being LGBTQIA+ is in no way a mental illness) goes unpunished?

OK so anyway long first post but I'm trying out Friendica to see if it's a platform that would work for a self hosted community - I had a 600 or so person community site from about 1998 until 2010 - I closed it down when most of the people had stopped using it in favor of Facebook.... That community (with a large number of LGBTQIA+ people and also allies thereof and generally left--of-center leaning freaks and geeks ... ) is collectively feeling very much like FB is not a place to be... so bringing that back may be worth it... I'm going to see.

Thanks for reading.

I'm considering setting up an instance for my country, but I don't know how fiddly it is. Have you looked into it?
in reply to Carsten Boll

If you need help setting up a Friendica instance, let me know.
in reply to Ruud

Thanks 😀 First I want to determine if Friendica has the features I want. Can we create group-like communities where members don't have to be friends?
in reply to tananda

@tananda I'm not certain if this is what you're referring to, but something I've noticed missing from Friendica (and the other fediverse alternatives), that Facebook has, is the ability to create communities, especially private ones. Groups are just a forwarding service without any control or moderation tools (beyond muting/blocking). I'm not certain if it's even possible to create private communities using the fediverse ecosystem beyond establishing a private defederated instance, but I think it's something that needs to be explored. YMMV.

Friendica Help

I need some help. What do these menu items refer to?
Latest activity
Latest posts
Latest Creation
Personal
Starred

Am I right that if I select, for example, my "Friends" circle, Latest Activity will show me the latest comments, posts, shares, and likes of people in my Friends circle? Latest Posts would show me only their posts?

But what do the Latest Creation and Personal items do? And how does one "star" a post or comment?

Breaking up with Fuckerberg

Should I even bother? I have a developer account but I don't think fuckerberg will allow something like this even if I stay under the rate limit.

If you live in an EU country, you could hit them with a GDPR request instead? "Delete it all for me."
in reply to Lemmus

Years ago I worked at a startup here in the US and we had to implement a GDPR process for EU customers. I think about that every day as I delete things manually, knowing that the billionaires running this country will never let a GDPR equivalent pass for us.
in reply to effariwhy

And now I see you live in the US, sorry for the noise. “Please move on, nothing to see here.”

Yesterday and today the postman delivered printed proof copies of my three #Boudicca #book editions (in English, German, and Dutch), along with the second edition of my German book about the #Ting.
