It has been a busy, busy year. And the best month of mothing has just started.
I have been haunting a local nature preserve called Kær Vestermark. I used to call it the grass desert, because it was close to a larger city, and the conservation efforts seemed to mostly be about conserving a nice area with cut lawns for dogwalkers and pedestrians. It has changed for the better in recent years, with cattle grazing and new ponds for amphibians.
The decline in moth numbers is concerning, though. I catch smaller numbers than I did four years ago, despite upgrading both gear and location. Last year I chalked it up to a wet spring, the year before that, a cold summer. This year....it's depressing.
I find species I haven't seen before, that is awesome, but some species, that used to be common as dirt, are showing up in smaller numbers or missing entirely.

Juna myöhästyi ja VR korvasi sadan kilometrin taksimatkan
Matkustin äskettäin Helsingistä käymään Kustavissa sukulaisten mökillä. Lähdin aivan ex tempore enkä ollut varma ehtimisestäni junaan, jolta oli Turussa 21 minuutin vaihto Taivassalon auton bussiin. Viittä minuuttia ennen junan lähtöä olin asemalaiturilla ja ostin pikaisesti lipun.
Pasilasta lähdettäessä sitten konduktööri kuulutti, että juna saapuu Turkuun arviolta 15–30 minuuttia myöhässä jonkin ratainfraongelman takia. Annoin sitten lipuntarkastuksen yhteydessä palautetta, että VR saisi noudattaa eurooppalaisten junayhtiöitten käytäntöä ilmoittaa junan tiedossa oleva myöhästyminen jo lipun oston yhteydessä, ja valitin, että menetin juuri jatkoyhteyteni Kustaviin.
Juna saapui sitten yli 40 minuuttia myöhässä, mutta juuri ennen Turkua konduktööri palasi ja antoi minulle yksisuuntaiseen taksimatkaan oikeuttavan kortin. Kannattaa siis reklamoida, ainakin jos pysyy asiallisena ja kohteliaana. VR sai nyt ainakin minulta ison laskun myöhästymisestänsä.

Entomologists from Krefeld, Germany, collected flying insects for two weeks in August 1994 (left) and—at the same site, with an identical trap— in August 2016 (right). Similar data from 63 German protected areas overall gave a shocking result: a 76 percent drop in insect biomass between 1989 and 2016.
It has worsened significantly in the past 9 years.

Not all of my methods do, my other method is counting how many insects I can tenderly kiss on the forehead and offer a little snack to but it's much more time consuming

I highly suspect that this is a direct consequence of pesticides being overused.

The horrible thing is that similar declines are seen in protected areas with minimal interference from direct human activity like pollutants.
Pesticides definitely don't help, but this is driven by climate change. Many insects and other life are evolved to fit in a very specific environmental niche, when the timing of seasons and weather patterns gets messed up it throws the life cycle of these insects into chaos. Like when a tree blooms too early and gets killed by frost
“for two hours each evening, the site got power and a 25-watt bulb flickered on above the porch. Out of the forest darkness, a tornado of #insects would flock to its glow, spinning and dancing before the light. Lit up, the side of the house would be “absolutely plastered with moths – tens of thousands of them”, #DanielJanzen says. [The walls would be] absolutely plastered with moths – tens of thousands of them… Inspired, he decided to erect a sheet for a light trap with a camera – a common way to document flying insect numbers and diversity. About 40 years ago I would have to clean all the dead bugs off my windshield after a visit to my realitives over in the Valley. Nowadays, my windshield is always clean.

Exactly this. When I was a kid and travelled with my parents the family car's front was covered in bugs. Now, 30 years later on my own car it's barely worth mentioning. Everyone can see it for themselves, if they want, but most don't.

Seriously though, I can think of many causes for this but I'll share one that has not yet been mentioned here, artificial light. There's so much of it and flying insects b-line for it whenever they see it, that *has* to mess with their life cycle over time.

I bought a piece of land (2000 sq. m). I plan to build a small wooden cottage on it (50 sq. m.) the rest will be filled with trees and flowers for insects and birds.
I also encourage everybody to support rewilding groups. For example, Randal Plunkett and he is the 21st Baron of Dunsany, is a metal head, horor movie director and feminist engaged in rewilding. An original guy worth promoting.

@RomanVilgut I was surprised it took so far in the thread for someone to bring up pesticides. Just because they're not applied in a particular area doesn't mean it has no impact when applied somewhere else; many insects are migratory!!
@cwicseolfor of corse, that´s true. But EU is a big area...
@RomanVilgut I fully agree - that will do a lot to remove one of the worst pressures on insect populations for a wide area. My point is more after having seen people suggest that the insect decline ought to be patchy and localized if it's explained by [whatever thing they want to continue] - this isn't something concerned individuals can solve alone, it needs systemic address exactly like the EU policy.

@glitzersachen @RomanVilgut My point was to clarify the mistaken position of others in contrast to mine and the data, it’s not my point of view. But I don’t think the fucked rhetoric helps much. Realizing there’s a huge problem with huge fallout is only useful to the extent it elucidates what to do next.
So my suggestion - check out and donate to Xerces Society. Leave your leaves and grass clippings. Plant natives.

🌏 has been dying a slow death from these 2 things alone ~ Parts of 🌏 [may] recover very slowly over time, but Most of it's once upon a time Purity CANNOT.

my technique is much less scientific: in the #Ozarks, way more bugs on the windshield compared to central #illinois where there are hardly any bugs on the windshield after a night drive. I blame the ecocide fueled by round up ready corn and soybeans in Illinois. It’s sad really when one understands the cascade effects on other species.😔

We have disrupted so many delicate ecosystems with our overwrought civilization, with its excessive consumption and pollution, and acquisitiveness.
Studies thus far have barely begun to scratch the surface of our environmental impact, as Science and media are both beholden to capitalism, the very root of the problem.
I watched a documentary where they had compelling evidence that it's so harmful to humans that it caused everything from cancer(s) to autism (because of the generation of women -GenX- who all of a sudden started having insane numbers of autistic dx)...so it's nt 'just' the insects and animals... it's also us.
there are obvious correllations: population growth, urban expansion, vehicles on the road... it has been shown that insects will not mate as often in the presence of light &/ noise pollution.
Another easy analogous case is the protection of areas of sea by satellites followed by rapid reinstatement of populations & biodiversity in those areas.
LED street lights are causing an huge upsurge in the spread of light pollution.

Same thing is happening here in New Zealand. I don't have measurements, but back in the '70s, when driving at night, it wasn't unusual to have to stop to clean your car windscreen because of the bug splatter. Now, a bug on the windscreen is almost worthy of comment.
It's not only sad, Vee. It's a sign of the ecological collapse we are causing and we really don't know what the eventual outcome will be for us. We are, after all, part of the natural world, although too few seem to realise this.
Maybe even ignorant people will get confronted with the consequences, if they like it or not.

Driving in southeast Texas during love bug season would mean having to pull over to wash your windshield pretty often.

@WellsiteGeo @RomanVilgut Strasbourg (France) is a nice smaller-scale example of the impact of banning the council's pesticide use in its urban area. It started in 2008, so there's potentially 17 years of data to have a look at. I haven't found any stats or graphs about insect abundance or diversity after a quick search but will come back if I find something interesting.
Well, all those dead insects from the first collection never got to breed, so, yes, fewer insects later, and those would also be less attracted to the trap due to selection pressures.
However, there's definitely been a massive drop in insect populations across a lot of the world over the last 30 years.

It's because farmers and their providers of insectizides are still allowed to poison our crops, lands and nature.
In China workers are forced to pollinate their fruit trees with brushes because there were no insects left after years of poisoning going on. And tehy're not coming back.
We are literally about to make the same mistakes due to grief, profits and inhumanity.

I remember a cycling tour in the evening probably 30 years ago.
After that, a lot of flying insects have been found on my front.
Today I can't say, that there are much flying insects after a tour on my front.
And I think, I have more place available for collecting today.

Flixbus tilannut 65 suurnopeusjunaa
Flixbus/-train on tilannut 65 kpl 230 km/h nopeuteen kykeneviä junia. Ensimmäisessä vaiheessa niissä on varustus Ruotsin, Tanskan, Saksan, Alankomaiden ja Itävallan rataverkoille. Tuo tarkoittaa, että junalle tehdään kaikissa noissa maissa melko kalliit hyväksytyskoeajot, mitä ei siis tehdä turhan päiten. Odotettavissa siis Flixjuna Ruotsista Saksaan ja edelleen jonnekin – ehkä Alankomaihin? Jos ei suorana, niin hyvin todennäköisesti ainakin vaihdollisena yhteytenä.
65 junaa tarkoittaa kai noin 20-30 junalinjaa, riippuen siitä miten paljon nuo haluavat varakalustoa.

Jännästi nämä Talgo 230 -junat ovat samaa perhettä kuin DB:n 17-vaunuiset ICE L -junat, mutta Flixtrain ei sano vaunujen määrästä mitään - kauppahinnan perusteella voisi ehkä arvioida? Veturit hankitaan erikseen, ja voivat kuulemma olla samoja Siemens Vectroneita, joita Flixtrain muutenkin käyttää ja joilla myös ICE L:iä välillä vedetään - auttaa hyväksytyksissä? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ICE_L

Haussa ei voi rajata, että haluaa matkan tapahtuvan pelkästään junalla, mutta toki alku- ja loppupisteen määrittäminen rautatieasemiksi ohjaa algoritmia pulauttamaan puhtaasti junia sisältävän reitin.
Kun pistän Flixbusin hakuun esim. Helsinki–Madrid, muodostuu muutaman vaihdon sisältävä reitti. Ja kyllä, jos Flixbus ei ennätä perua lippua ja antaa rahoja takaisin ennen kuin olen jo ehtinyt aloittaa matkan (tämähän tapahtuu useamman päivän ennen kulkupäivää), se on velvollinen järjestämään mut perille. Flixtrain ei varsinaisesti vastaa vaihtojen toteutumisesta, mutta se vastaa siitä, että pääset jonkinlaisella kulkupelillä määränpäähäsi suunnilleen luvatussa ajassa. Käytännössä se tarkoittaa, että junavaihdon on onnistuttava tai korvaukset maksettava, koska jos joutuu ensin odottamaan bussia ja sitten köröttelemään sen kyydissä, ei kyllä voi enää ehtiä ajoissa perille.
Joka tapauksessa sellaisesta omioilusta ei ole kyse, että Flixtrain väittäisi olevansa pelkä lippujen välittäjä eikä myyjä. Kun ostat yhden vaihdollisen Flixbus-reissun, siinä on hyvin yksiselitteisesti kyse yhdestä kuljetussopimuksesta, eikä Flixbus väitä mitään muuta. Sen suhteen asiat ovat siis hyvin.
Flixtrainilla on inha tapa perua junavuoroja päivän tai kaksi ennen junan lähtöä ja antaa rahat takaisin. Siinä sitten ihmettelet, että "mistähän hemmetistä nyt pieraisen järkihintaiset liput määränpäähäni?" Voit toki buukata vaikka seuraavaan Flixbus-/-train-yhteyteen, mutta toki sitten paljon korkeammalla hinnalla kuin mitä olit siitä etukäteen ostamastasi perutusta lipusta maksanut. Toivottavasti tuo vuorojen peruminen vähenee kun tulee nämä junat. Perumiseen vaikuttanee se, että Flixtrainilla on niin todella vähän kalustoa käytössään. Yksittäisiä vaunuja perutaan aika isostakin prosentista junia, jolloin esim. kuuden vaunun matkustajat saatetaan sulloa neljään vaunuun. Seisomapaikkaahan sellainen merkitsee sitten. Joskus olisi hauskaa kokea, mitä käy jos on ostanut lipun vaikkapa Lissabonista Leipzigiin niin, että viimeinen pätkä mennään junalla, ja juna sitten perutaan sen jälkeen kun on jo itse lähtenyt Lissabonista.

Kiitos kokemusten jakamisesta! En ole matkustanut Flixtrainilla, ja kuulostaa ettei ehkä kannatakaan ennen kuin kuluttajansuoja paranee. Tai ainakin pitää varautua hankaluuksiin.
230 km/h ei ole oikeastaan vielä suurnopeusjuna. Siihen luokkaan luetaan 250 km/h ja yli nopeudet.

The joys of having a wild garden. I've lived here for more than 12 years, and in that time, the garden has gone from trimmed hedges, mowed down grass, and no flowers to an absolute abundance of life.
By my last count, I have observed over 800 species. I do not count most of the plants as they wouldn't be here if I hadn't planted or sown them.
The biggest breakthrough was when I put in a small pond.
Every year, I make small tweaks and improvements, such as adding rotting wood, piles of twigs and branches, stone dikes, clay cobs, and nesting boxes. This year, I think I'll try to clear a small area and mix in some sand to attract more ground-nesting bees and maybe put in another pond if I can find the space for it.
Is there an English equivalent to the Danish VildMedVilje (WildOnPurpose)?

Ahh yeah, we have rewilding in Denmark as well, fortunately. The term is mostly used about larger areas where natural hydrology is restored, large herbivores are reintroduced, and human influence is kept to a minimum.
I can't quite claim that about my garden. It's more like a micromanaged pit stop, space is at a premium, so there is a lot of tampering going on 😁

Maria, I would like to learn more about your pond. How do you provide the H2O to keep it filled? I’m guessing that it started out as a hole dug into the soil around 12” (30cm) deep with a gravel base then a couple of rubberized material liners overlay the gravel and then held down with larger rocks and stones.

Nothing quite so fancy I'm afraid. It's a second-hand moulded plastic basin. Max depth is 56 cm (22") with two plateaus. The birds only use the top plateau for bathing and drinking, depth is about 5 cm (2").
I mostly use rainwater from the gutter to fill it, if there is a rare drought, it gets the hose.
I haven't got any filtration, semi-aquatic and aquatic pond plants take care of most of the nutrients, I've planted tall plants for shade, and I'm fairly diligent in removing leaves and other debris to avoid eutrophication.

The neighbours gardens, not so much. Their gardens are covered in lawn thatch, hardly anything can grow there, but the birds have been helpful, sowing Linaria and garlic mustard in every little spot of exposed dirt along the street and in the public parking lot. The butterflies and Bumblebees are loving it.

It someting along the lines of it, but with a small space like this, a hands off approach is not possible. And I haven't got room for large herbivores 😁

Not as such, but I sometimes draw a circle around my house on iNat when someone thinks my garden is a mess. Then I remember why my garden looks the way it does.
Ohhh, I sometimes wish I could start over, knowing what I know now. It would save me time and mistakes. On the other hand, I'd miss out on the pottering about and tinkering, and that really is, half the fun.

Skvalderkål har jeg også i bunkevis men jeg planter ret tæt og plukker skvalderkålen lidt ned når jeg ser dem. Haven er så lille så det er heldigvis overkommeligt at holde det nogenlunde nede. Men ja, på små arealer uden store græssere, der skal man lige hjælpe det lidt på vej.

Nukuin vähän huonosti. Heräsin aikaisin enkä saanut unta, kun mietin eilistä työhaastattelua. Tänä aamuna viherhuoneessa tuoksuu kuitenkin appelsiininkukka ja edamamekin itää, vaikka olin jo vähän menettämässä toivoni niiden suhteen. 😀

Se on lahjaksi saatu valmiiksi puun muotoisena. Mutta tekee säännöllistä pieniä kirsikkatomaatin kokoisia kirpsakoita appelsiineja.

I am a lucky, lucky potato. I took a trip to Stensbæk Hede early this morning. First I found the severed wings of a male Saturnia pavonia -Lille Natpåfugleøje -Emperor Moth. Two minutes later I found a female laying eggs and then another female.

I found a dying female once and brought her home, where she laid some eggs. One of them survived past mini caterpillar stage and then it made a cocoon - I forgot about it in my office until one morning there was a horrible stench, and I was privileged to watch a moth emerge from the cocoon.
From an egg the size of a grain of salt to a weird spiky caterpillar that eats lots of leaves to a moth - nature is amazing!

ÖBB:ltä ostettu matka voi olla vajaa
ÖBB:llä on yleisesti outo tapa sekä näyttää hintoja, jotka eivät kata koko matkaa, että yhteyksiä, jotka eivät ole kokonaisuudessaan saatavissa. Mutta tällä kertaa oli vielä oudompaa: Kolmen junan yhteyden Wien-Krakow-Warszawa-Białystok lisätiedoissa (ks. kuva) näkyy, että myös junassa Krakow-Warszawa on pakollinen paikkavaraus, mutta ÖBB myi varaukset vain ensimmäiseen ja viimeiseen junaan.
Onneksi on puhelimessa myös tsekkiläinen Muj vlak, sieltä saa ostettua puolalaisiin juniin paikkavarauksia (13,80€ EIP-juniin).
Wien-Krakow-junan ensimmäinen luokka on muuten sveitsiläisessä vaunussa.

Pakollinen paikkavaraus joka pitää ostaa erikseen on kyllä erikoinen konsepti. Toki varmaan teknististä syistä mutta pohjoismaissa on tottunut siihen ettei tartte miettiä paikkavarausta ollenkaan.
Joo, rajapintaintegraatioista on tässä kyse, ja ne ovat tahdosta ja tekniikan mahdollisuuksista riippuvaisia. Kännykkään ja nettipalveluihin ei kannata suhtautua ihan herran sanana 😁

Harmi jos rajapinnat eivät toimi, kun nettipalvelut kuitenkin tänä päivänä ovat ensisijainen tapa järkätä kaukoliikenteen junamatkoja. Tässä Flix vetää pidemmän korren, rajanylityksistä ja operaattoreista huolimatta kaikki matkat etsitään, ostetaan ja maksetaan samalla johdonmukaisella ja luotettavalla tavalla. Kaikessa muussa sitten taitaakin olla sanomista.
Löysin jotain aiempia kokemuksia, joiden mukaan ainakin joskus DB:ltä on saanut EIP-juniin paikkavarauksen, joka on ollut vajaa eli ei ole sisältänyt EIP-junien vaatimaa 10€ lisämaksua. Ehkä DB ja ÖBB ovat sitten todenneet, että selkeämpi olla myymättä paikkavarausta lainkaan (ja olla varoittamatta asiakasta muuten kuin lisätiedoissa!).
ÖBB:n puolesta voin sanoa, että paikkavaraus on usein pakollinen jos jokin yhteys on usein niin täynnä ihmisiä, ettei junaan ihan oikeasti mahdu ja joutuvat heittämään porukkaa jopa pihalle.
Monella on itävallassa "Klima-ticket" jonka avulla voi matkustaa vuoden aikana vapaasti junilla, mutta paikka pitää ostaa erikseen jos haluaa, joten monet eivät osta paikkaa ja joko löytävät vapaan istumapaikan tai sitten seisovat. Pakollisella istumapaikalla valvotaan, että juna ei ole aivan liian täynnä.
Olen aikoinaan monesti varannut paikan, mutten päässyt istumaan kun juna oli aivan täynnä ihmisiä ja etuoven kohdalla oli jo jumi.
Ei ole onneksi tapahtunut pitkään aikaan. Pienemmillä reiteillä ei tarvitse varata paikkaa, mutta suosittelen jos on pitkä matka edessä ;)
Eilen muuten näkyi puolalaisella PKP Intercityllä äkkilähtötarjous, että 06:10 lähtevällä junalla olisi saanut saman matkan 1. luokassa hintaan 76€ - ei hinnalla pilattu. Ennenkin olen törmännyt näihin 2. luokkaa halvempiin 1. luokan matkoihin, ainakin Ruotsissa SJ:n yöjunassa sis. aamiaisbuffetin perillä Grand Hotel Lundissa.
jo vuonna 2009, kun ekan kerran 20 vuoteen matkustin junalla Ranskaan ja ostin yksittäiset liput, huomasin että joillakin Saksaan päättyvillä/sieltä alkavilla osuuksilla ykkösluokka oli edullisempi, koska kakkosluokan halvimmat liput oli jo ehditty myydä mut ykkösluokassa niitä vielä oli. Sama ilmiö varmaan edelleen aina siellä täällä.

Voisi ehkä jopa sanoa, että dynaaminen hinnoittelu on pilannut 1. luokan: mitä luokkayhteiskuntaa siinä enää on, jos halvan äkkilähdön ostajat tulevat täyttämään vaunuosaston, jossa matkustamisesta varakkaat ovat maksaneet ekstraa juurikin ajatellen, ettei se tule täyteen rahvasta 😉
DB tekee kans sitä, että näyttää vain osan reitistä, mutta siinä lukee melko selkeästi "hinta koskee vain osaa matkasta" ja sitten matkan valitsemalla näkee heti ensimmäisellä avautuvalla sivulla, mille välille lippu oikeasti on. Ja yleensä se puuttuva osuus on tosi lyhyt ja halvalla hankittavissa.

Samalla kun merijään peittävyys antarktikalla on vähentynyt entisestään, 2021-2023 massa kasvoi. GRACE-data näyttää siltä että aika vähäisen, SMB näyttää että paljonkin. Jutussa arvioitiin että massan kasvu johtui kasvaneista lumisademääristä.
Tuleva data näyttää miten tämä kehitys jatkuu, mutta pessimisti minussa sovittaisi lyhyelle aikavälille laskevan suoran tuohon GRACE-dataan ja ennustaisin tulevan sen perusteella.

Can anyone explain or have tips on how the fast trains work in #Europe ?
I'm thinking France, maybe north Italy Germany and Netherlands.
We tried circles around Paris milan zuric Munich then Amsterdam but the routing seems off.

Many things said.with regard to.english are aplicable tonother languages as well. And even the way sentences, questions and quotations are marked, differ by language. Almost every language has untranslatable words. With coulors and numbers, different languages have different shemes to name them.
Generally technology tend to be western European centric. It underestimates the complexity and variety within humanity.
There are languages,.where a word can be a full sentence. And so on.
It doesn't end with left running or right running also top down or vice versa and combinations.
Whilst one language by country works most of the time, but there are countries with multiple languages, who are equal to each other.

Yes to all this, except that monolingual countries are the exception, I believe, and the majority of the world's population actually lives in multilingual environments.
Even here in Finland, with just 5 million people, we have three national languages, and several smaller linguistic communities in addition.
