Hello world

I firmly believe that decentralized, noncommercial social media is the only way to go. You can't trust a person who'd get rich off of "connecting people." I already have accounts on a Mastodon platform, Bookwyrm, and Pixelfed. I don't expect all these to last and that's OK. It's a time of upheaval, and a time of experimentation. I'm seriously considering hosting an instance if that's what it takes to get my family off facebook. Anyway, hello everyone. Nice to meet you.

Well fortunately (unfortunately for the rampaging cheeto) is that there are three things not owned by the US and therefor out of his control. The Gulf of Mexico, Panama Canal, and Greenland.

AT FIRST, I THOUGHT THE WHOLE "GULF OF AMERICA" THING WAS JUST AN INTERNET JOKE. BUT NOW, I JUST DON'T GIVE A FUCK. GIVE THE STATUE OF LIBERTY A BOOB JOB. NOTHING MATTERS.

Yet another example of americans terrified by monsters of their own creation.

I talked to CNN's Clare Duffy about what a TikTok ban in the US might actually look like and how it's likely to affect creators and fans.

Seriously, I believe we really need to stop trying to prevent meteors from hitting Earth. Humans have run their course and it is time to etch-a-sketch this motherfucker.

Body of missing Indian journalist found in septic tank

Summary

Indian journalist Mukesh Chandrakar, 32, known for reporting on corruption, was found dead in a septic tank in Chhattisgarh on 3 January after going missing on New Year’s Day.

Police arrested three suspects, including two relatives, while contractor Suresh Chandrakar, a key suspect, is on the run.

Authorities suspect blunt-force trauma, and Chandrakar’s reporting via his YouTube channel Bastar Junction has drawn attention. Local journalists protested, demanding justice and accountability for the killing.

Attacks on journalists in India are common, with 3-4 reporters killed annually for their work, according to Reporters Without Borders.

Introduction - Hello & Welcome

Zuckerberg has now apparently burned the last bridges to the good side of the Force and wants to go to hell together with his rich friends, religious fundamentalists and other Nazis. In the hope that one or two brave souls will make their way out of the meta-molloch and into the fediverse, I am starting an attempt here to make myself findable for them.

There will be a lot of content here about canoeing, geese and other pleasant things and I look forward to a lively exchange.

The Hidden Profit Machine Behind Academic Publishing: A Call for Reform

The Hidden Profit Machine Behind Academic Publishing: A Call for Reform

In the world of academic publishing, a startling economic paradox exists that challenges the very foundations of scientific dissemination. The "big five" commercial publishers—Elsevier, Wiley, Taylor & Francis, Springer Nature, and SAGE—have built billion-dollar empires with profit margins rivaling tech giants, all while relying on the unpaid labor of researchers and public funding. This system, which some critics liken to a racket, sees academics conducting research, writing articles, and managing peer review processes without compensation, only for publishers to sell these works back to the same institutions that produced them. This introductory paragraph sheds light on a pressing issue in scientific communication, raising questions about the sustainability and ethics of current academic publishing models and overall, the core of its business model.

Movie: Conclave (2024)

Last night I watched Conclave (2024):

imdb.com/title/tt20215234/

As a #Catholic, this was an interesting #movie for sure. I think it was a really solid movie with broad appeal. Even if you aren't #religious, if you like political intrigue and #drama you'll probably love this! The characters are a little obviously exaggerated, but it was well acted and the #Vatican City set and #Sistine Chapel was incredible.
