Gentle Reminder About Alt-Text <img class=" title=":mastodon:"/>

Remember FediFriends that alt-text actually has a function and should be describing the media you are including in your post.

Please refrain from just writing "image" or "gif" or anything similar (yes I have seen this regularly, and worse).

It's okay if the description is short,
but please write what the media actually represents. For example: "Photo of a tabby cat sitting on a couch."

This is important for accessibility 💚

Here's how to add alt-text to your posts: infosec.exchange/@Em0nM4stodon…

Time for a re-#introduction for new followers.

Hi! I'm Chris, and I own Elfkin, a custom #couture #fashion biz in LA that specializes in fabulous clothing for hard-to-fit bodies. Every garment is unique and cut from custom drafted, perfectly fitted patterns.

In addition to design and pattern making, I do a lot of my own #sewing. #artist #lgbtq

I would like to start a new hash tag called #CatStories and see how far it goes. (To my fellow blind friends, that's capital c, capital s). I think we can all have a bit of fun with it, even those of us who are not lucky enough to be owned by cats but who love them. Share a story of your cat or a cat whom you know, with or without a picture. It can be funny, heart-warming, silly, or even strange. Ideally, it would be true, but if you feel the urge to be creative, you may do so. This is meant to be light-hearted.

The Qiu Mansion in Shanghai, China, has a mysterious tale attached. The structure was built by two brothers who'd made their fortune in the dye trade and they lived there in great luxury. They surrounded their mansion with lush gardens, stocking them with animals including peacocks, tigers and crocodiles. But one day the brothers vanished and were never heard of again. The mansion became dilapidated and the gardens overgrown. The animals were either sold off or eaten when a famine struck Shanghai. Eventually, a large company bought the site and began to develop it as a commercial location. Workers were soon appearing at local hospitals, complaining of bite wounds. The site was searched and no wild animals were found. Workers on the nightshift at a nearby hotel saw nightmarish animals manifesting on the site then vanishing. One local woman even saw a dragon-like creature climbing up one of the cranes. #ghosts #paranormal #folklore #weird #gothic #China

Human imagination can be extravagant, and things imagined are subjectively indistinguishable from objective reality to the person imagining them. Also, most tales like this are embellished.

It's exciting to imagine exciting things, especially fantastical things, but it's also the province of immaturity or deep -- often wilful -- ignorance. This either didn't happen, or has a much less extravagant explanation than 'ghosts'.

Question to other #blind screenreader users:
In this article and many others lately, I am hearing extra detail about links from #JAWS 2025. For example, where #NVDA says "link: History", Jaws says "Link: history, posts tagged with history" Where NVDA says "Link: manhunt", Jaws says "Link: Manhunt, posts tagged with manhunt".
What is this called and how do I disable it? Thanks!

This is ridiculous. I can't even find where I am with a phone using Pachli. It's absolutely nothing like TweeseCake. I can read posts and respond to them, but I have to keep scrolling and can't immediately go to the top or bottom of a list. So if I haven't used this since October 2024, I have to arrow to the posts from the present, which means literally thousands upon thousands of keystrokes. Even when I go to notifications, I'm not sure if I'm reading current things or older ones. I'm sure Tusky is the same, since Pachli is based on it. I can try racoon, but I'm guessing it won't have great keyboard support either. Not everyone wants to use a touchscreen! Fortunately, from what I know, the makers of Pachli really do care about accessibility, so perhaps, something can be done to increas the number of keyboard shortcuts.

in reply to Georgiana Brummell

I haven't tried it, but if your device supports Talkback then support.google.com/accessibili… lists the keyboard shortcuts for navigating around the screen.

I have just tried with Talkback gesture navigation and that lets me navigate to the menu, open it, and choose "Load newest posts", so I expect the keyboard shortcuts to do the same thing should work.

Accessible Youtube Downloader Pro stopped working properly a few days ago. Can anyone recommend anything that works with NVDA? I would prefer a client, but I have also used various youtube to mp3 sites in the past. I would prefer something that lets me set the bitrate to 128kbps or that defaults to it.

In my experience there are two good tools:

1. Terminal application yt-dlp. Can be hard to install but, after that you just run "yt-dlp -x <your_URL>" to download audio

Very reliable, but latest version is recommended

2. NewPipe - unofficial YouTube app for Android. Supports audio only download, but I'm not sure about screen reader support

Mostly reliable, but also latest version should be used

I don't know friend I a as client but usually there are a lot of filter settings that prevent your time line being overcrowded with stuff you are not interested in. My personsl feed contains only massages/posts from people or institutions I follow. I'm using Tusky for Android.
Unfortunately or fortunately I never used FB and I don't know how exactly they organized their feed.

@junglecat_rant 🏳️‍🌈🇺🇦 I'm using TweeseCake. There are different timelines, but the problems still persist. Granted, I can narrow things a bit by not reading the Federated Timeline and reading Home and Notifications, but it's still scattered and I still see various conversations. I know Friendica has circles, but I've never really delved into those. As for Facebook, I use the Basic Mobile site (not app), which was very accessible and uncluttered. Their main page is a mess, and since they shut down the Basic Mobile version, I haven't really posted there.

I am starting to accept some people as subscribers rather than full friends. This means that they can see my posts but I can't see theirs. Today, for example, I had someone request to follow me. I went to his profile and immediately saw obscenities and radical politics. I don't mind if people follow me, but I have no interest in seeing any of that in my feeds, especially since I spent several hours cleaning them last night!

The Alces alces andersoni or Western Moose is native to the woods and protected areas of Northern and Western Canada, the Northern United States, and they were even introduced to the Fiordland National Park in New Zealand, but might not still be there. Described by Roy L. Peterson in 1952, they are the second largest species of moose in the world! They stand 1.9 to 2.0 meters or 5.11 to 6.6ft at the shoulder, with antlers spanning 1.5 to 1.7 meters or 4.9 to 5.6ft, and weigh 600 to 1,590 pounds.

@rothko That was my fault for not doing more research first, and not checking for new comments. Anywho, I realized how the post was worded, and edited it. That species of moose was transported from Canada to South Island, New Zealand in 1900, because whoever was in charge of the government wanted them in the park. The moose didn’t survive, but for some reason, they tried again with more moose. That time, they did better, but no one knows if they are still there. No one has seen them.

One particularly strange myth is that a colony of whales live in Utah's Great Salt Lake. Apparently, a British scientist introduced two whales into the lake - which he'd captured near Australia - with the intention of starting a whale oil industry. He had the creatures transported by rail from San Francisco in special tanks filled with sea water. The whales, however, broke free from their enclosure and travelled into deeper parts of the lake, where they were later seen spouting and playing with their offspring. They were also said to have grown significantly, reaching 60 feet in length. This legend seems to have been spread by sensationalist newspaper articles. It's unlikely that whales could survive in water of such high salinity and the relatively shallow depth of the lake would be unsuitable for large marine mammals. #folklore #weird #history #whales #cryptozoology #Utah

@Moss Wow. I have lived in Utah my whole life (finally about to change that!) and I've never heard that myth!

As soon as I read the first line of the post I realized it is impossible, because I knew the lake is significantly saltier than the ocean and that whales could never thrive in water that shallow. But, I'm not surprised that this myth exists.
