I have both a free kitty, and a "pure bred" kitty that cost $800.
The free kitty was born feral, has hunter instincts, loves her monkey-parents to bits and busily keeps our property free of rodents.
The not-free kitty is an inbred mooch who is continuously offended that her existence isn't justified by her good looks alone and is useless around the house.
Care and feeding costs are about the same.
So, yeah, heard the analogy before. I'll take the free kitten every time, thank you.

I saw an account on the local feed that posted way to many posts to my liking, so I clicked on the three dots to ignore them. That account was NOT in my contacts. It worked as a charm. I got curious and tried to find out where I could find all the accounts I ignored that way, but that functionality does not seem to exist. friendica.world/contact/ignore… and friendica.world/contact/blocke… only work for accounts that are in my contacts.

@gargle Not exactly what you're asking for, but have you tried collapsing their posts? I do this a bunch with accounts that I don't want to flat-out block for whatever reason.
I tried collapsing, but then I got confused because I couldn't figure out how to list all of the accounts for which I had collapsed posts.

For the record, I added the account in question and clicked in channel settings to never show posts. In my friendica.world/network?channe… feed I clicked on the More button for the account in question and selected collapse. Friendica shows that the content of this account is collapsed.

In the admin settings is a configuration called 'Posts per user on community page'. When this is set, it will restrict the number of posts per user.
Also the admin could restrict the number of posts that a user can create per hour/day/week.
Funny side note: I created these settings for exactly that user. That account had been on several other Friendica servers before and - I guess - annoyed tons of admins because of this flooding.

I loved every issue of Byte. It was a tidal wave of discovery for me. It changed my life , a path I still follow.
I loved Byte back in the day but Ted Nelson might disagree about 1975 being the dawn of the revolution.

Well, I was thinking more of the date than the parentage. Ted would probably place the date of the dawn a few years earlier with the founding of the People’s Computing Company.
Byte played an important role as a chronicle of the era, of course; but they arrived a little later than the dawn, it seems to me.
Some time around 1996 I ended up with a CD from them that had their whole(?) back catalogue. Wish I still had it. Actually it's probably on Internet Archive now I think about it.

I fondly remember picking issues off the shelf in the library and finding algorithms to try on the Apple II's sitting on plynths in same library. Circa 1984.
I remember being tasked with setting up an accounting system on a TRS-80 which used a cassette for storage. It was painful.
In 1975 I was taking computer science and learning to program using routines saved on IBM punch cards.
In 1985 I had an Olivetti luggable 52 pound PC with 640K RAM and a 10MB hard drive running Lotus123 and WordPerfect on DOS 4.2. Fabulous.

In 2025, I get the best performance and hasslefree productivity by disconnecting from the cloud and running 15yr old desktop software from those tech co’s that have all moved to #enshitification

I have fond memories of Byte mag. I discovered it in about 1980, when most computers were huge vastly expensive boxes in aircon rooms, but also we were just getting stuff like the ZX80 et al, that actual people could afford and play with. Byte helped people like me understand that we could do this stuff ourselves, and write our own programs. They published listings in BASIC, as all the new 'personal computers' had a BASIC interpreter.
Happy days.

Wow, I never considered the commercial real estate connection! It's going to be a huge mess with a ripple effect far beyond just the tech sector.
What really infuriates me is all the (wasted) billions invested into #AI in the US could've gone into addressing real problems: such as converting former commercial buildings in downtown corridors into affordable housing.
Our society really is screwed.

The red county in a red Midwest US state in which I live was poised to get a $1 B data center. The proposal carefully never mentioned what it was for. When they had a town hall, public opinion was overwhelmingly negative with people mostly worried about our water (because we all assumed it was for GenAI).
The proposal was withdrawn.

@mensrea Unprecedented market consolidation also means that the overwhelming majority of 'value' in the stock market is held by 10% of the listed companies. Many are tech or tech related. Add in tariffs and we are looking for something far more like 1929 than 2008.
I've said elsewhere that "AI" generally is just a category, like "power tools" is a category.
With the arrival of LLMs, Tech Bros said "Power tools for everybody!" and then they hyper specialized in making only drills.
Everybody who found it's hard to cut, shape or otherwise manipulate their material with *just* a drill is now having to wonder whether it was worth billions of dollars for all those drills.
Let’s start with calling it the LLM bubble for starters. We don’t have AI yet.
Maybe part of the issue lies in the term AI. People in general react to "AI" as if it were the hyper intelligence we've all read about and seen in movies. It's an LLM. A large language model. A neural net stringing words together. Useful for some things. Not for others. Like it or not, names influence what people think. Too late to fix it I guess.
The phase after the bursting of this bubble might come to be called "the AI nuclear winter" because of the toxic fallout ... @Tooden

Disagree. Lots of companies have largely paid lip-service to this fad. They have either deployed a shallow integration, such as a chatbot and called it "AI" or rebadged some non-generative technique that they were already doing.
IMO very few comapnies are doing any serious work with LLMs b/c they just aren't that useful for most of the data processing that companies and customers actually want to do.
What I'm more concerned about is the overvaluation of the stock market b/c of correlation between a few companies like Nvidia and the wider tech sector.
I do think a price correction is going to happen, perhaps relatively soon, but as always: "The market can remain irrational for longer than you can remain solvent"

I did the maths about a week ago. If the tech bubble drops in value (proprtionately) as much as as it did when the .com bubble crashed, the US stock markets will lose about as much of their total value as the NYSE did on the first two days of the Wall Street Crash. The secondary effects from margin calls are likely to have a similar effect.

I’m not a particularly vengeful person, but I would love it if they stayed true to form and held on to their AI strategy long after everyone else has realised it is a massive folly.

@hj Hehe, I'm jealous of what this author did: go into full blood representation without hesitation. Here, I decided to make the blood on the armour of the young knight almost not visible, to avoid shocking the audience with problem at sight of blood and keep the strip for all audience. There's a webcomic called Order of the Stick about D&D characters that regularly talk about XP, going up levels, etc. The best of course was when the party needed a big diamond for something, so the thief character crawled out of the page, went to her own bio webpage on the same site, and 'stole' a diamond from her bio pic. After that her bio pic didn't have a diamond anymore.
As for video games, Metal Gear Solid did stuff like this, such as when one character you are fighting can easily block all your moves because he can 'read your thoughts'. The trick is to plug your controller in the other slot, then he finds that he can no longer read your mind. 😆

Please make it simpler to download and update LibreOffice in languages other than English.
To those unfamiliar with English and/or with difficulties with using computers, the download of an English package, and then the requirement of downloading and installing a "translated user interface" can be quite difficult to understand.
Notice this whole ordeal has to be repeated for every update.
Why don't you do it like OpenOffice or Firefox?

Just look at what happened with the Tea app. I wouldn't trust ANY of these verification providers as far as I could throw them.
The BEST thing the user can do right now is use VPN's. Mullvad, Proton, Self Host Wireguard, whatever. DO NOT GIVE ANY OF THESE PLACES YOUR ID.

What on earth is wrong with age verification? The only people it harms are criminals.
@david_colquhoun It just doesn't work. If a site asks you to provide ID to prove your age, anyone (even a child) can submit a fake one. But plenty of less tech-savvy users will simply provide their passport etc., which malicious sites can exploit (and legitimate sites might leak). If anything, the only people this helps are criminals.
@david_colquhoun Again, this won't protect children in the first place because it's trivial to circumvent. It will, however, give criminals a new opportunity to trick people into giving them sensitive information. I've already seen malicious replies on Mastodon telling people they need to verify their accounts.
Please: if you see one of these, don't take it at face value. Be similarly cautious if something like it pops up anywhere else.

Then you also have nefarious types tricking people into giving up personal info. Non adult LGBTQ material is also being put behind age verification, so young LGBTQ people are being denied information.

The phrase "feather pen" caught my eye. An English speaker would probably just say "quill'. This led me into a tangle of French/English translations. Online dictionaries (the zombie corpses of living languages) tell me that the English 'pen' is equivalent to 'stylo' in French. I'm also informed by online dictionaries that English 'feather' is equivalent to 'plume' in French, as is the English 'quill'. The dictionaries also tell me that 'la plume' means 'the feather' in English.

LLM is replacing therapists, advisors, lawyers, and even doctors in some cases, according to news articles. But guess what? None of the usual protections apply. If your private chat can be subpoenaed, there is no NDA. There is no legal or ethical obligation. Governments love this. Under the DMA, the FSFE with a coalition of civil-society organisations prompts the @EUCommission to open proceedings to investigate Alphabet's (#Google) regarding the uninstallation of pre-installed apps in Android.
Uninstalling is completely removing the app, not just disabling it! This is key for #DeviceNeutrality!

there is a way to remove pre-installed applications, but you either have to root the phone, or remove them via Android Debug Bridge (adb).

If you uninstall something, then it shouldn't use any resources, including HD space. Disabling isn't even close to uninstalling.
I understand this shouldn't be the way to deal with this but here's a great guide for anyone looking to permanently remove apps that only allow disabling. You can also use an app like MalwareBytes to view system apps and get their names for removal.

another issue with not being able to uninstall is that code stays there, with all its security flaws, indefinitely. It only gets patched/updates if it's enabled.
For the non-technical folks that means it might be able to allow someone who's gotten a toe hold on the device to then use that code to escalate privileges.
Even worse are apps that you uninstall, but instead of getting removed, they just revert to some old version. Like, why? If I want it uninstalled, REMOVE IT, not just replace with some older version. Google's apps are especially prone to doing this nonsense.
