I’ve been saying when the #AI bubble pops, it’s going to be so disastrous it will make the dot com bust pale in comparison.
Almost every online platform and SAAS I use has gone all-in on “integrating” AI in some form.

Wow, I never considered the commercial real estate connection! It's going to be a huge mess with a ripple effect far beyond just the tech sector.
What really infuriates me is all the (wasted) billions invested into #AI in the US could've gone into addressing real problems: such as converting former commercial buildings in downtown corridors into affordable housing.
Our society really is screwed.

@mensrea
The red county in a red Midwest US state in which I live was poised to get a $1 B data center. The proposal carefully never mentioned what it was for. When they had a town hall, public opinion was overwhelmingly negative with people mostly worried about our water (because we all assumed it was for GenAI).
The proposal was withdrawn.
The tide is turning.
That's fantastic news for your community!
I've said elsewhere that "AI" generally is just a category, like "power tools" is a category.
With the arrival of LLMs, Tech Bros said "Power tools for everybody!" and then they hyper specialized in making only drills.
Everybody who found it's hard to cut, shape or otherwise manipulate their material with *just* a drill is now having to wonder whether it was worth billions of dollars for all those drills.
On the other hand In have not seen ai at all, except for Duckduckgo, and I used uBlock origin to edit ai out of their page immediately.
I have visited no ai offering site, knowingly anyway.
Disagree. Lots of companies have largely paid lip-service to this fad. They have either deployed a shallow integration, such as a chatbot and called it "AI" or rebadged some non-generative technique that they were already doing.
IMO very few comapnies are doing any serious work with LLMs b/c they just aren't that useful for most of the data processing that companies and customers actually want to do.
What I'm more concerned about is the overvaluation of the stock market b/c of correlation between a few companies like Nvidia and the wider tech sector.
I do think a price correction is going to happen, perhaps relatively soon, but as always: "The market can remain irrational for longer than you can remain solvent"
@david_chisnall Yes, this is a concern. But I don't know how big of a one it is - although "not as bad as 2008" is a pretty low bar to clear.
I guess we'll see what happens as and when the CoreWeave (aka "WeWork for Nvidia chips") domino falls. Nothing good, I expect!
my previous employer is really hyping up their AI adoption.
I’m not a particularly vengeful person, but I would love it if they stayed true to form and held on to their AI strategy long after everyone else has realised it is a massive folly.

There's a webcomic called Order of the Stick about D&D characters that regularly talk about XP, going up levels, etc. The best of course was when the party needed a big diamond for something, so the thief character crawled out of the page, went to her own bio webpage on the same site, and 'stole' a diamond from her bio pic. After that her bio pic didn't have a diamond anymore.
As for video games, Metal Gear Solid did stuff like this, such as when one character you are fighting can easily block all your moves because he can 'read your thoughts'. The trick is to plug your controller in the other slot, then he finds that he can no longer read your mind. 😆

It's absolutely not shoddy, because it was never meant to protect children in the first place. So many experts have pointed this out. This is a willful censorship law, it should go completely.
Inability or unwillingness? What would it profit a Parliamentarian who had invested substantial political capital in the project to look behind the label on the tin and discover a can of worms? There was no shortage of people pointing out the design defects in the Bill.
And when it all goes horribly wrong, blame the platforms, blame the regulator; then claim that this was only ever a trial run and we always knew we would need OSA v2.

Reddit, Grindr and Bluesky have chosen age verification providers based outside the UK with concerning privacy policies. Go figure.
❌ You can't choose provider
❌ Platforms don't need to pick certified providers
❌ Providers don't need to meet specific privacy or security standards
✅ Regulate the age verification industry now.

Age verification goes way beyond porn, impacting everything from Reddit to Spotify to Xbox.
❌ Content is being age gated when it shouldn’t, including subreddits for sexual health like r/STD, for health like r/stopsmoking, or news like r/israelexposed and an X post featuring a speech about grooming gangs by Katie Lam MP.
✅ Limit the scope of the UK Online Safety Act.

The Online Safety Act is technologically naive and ignorant to privacy risks, so people are finding ways around age verification. But...
❌ Teens could be pushed towards riskier things like the dark web, dodgy free VPNs or scams.
✅ Invest in a public information campaign to help people navigate online safety and learn about the privacy risks of age verification.

Plurality online is being wrecked.
The UK Online Safety Act imposes heavy burdens on small sites, including risk assessments for a broad range of content, the threat of fines or the cost of checking the age of every user.
❌ Many small sites are shutting down or blocking UK users entirely.
✅ Change the categorisation of sites, so small sites and instances are exempt.

I work as a dev consultant and all my clients/work recently involves me being a sort of "digital janitor" cleaning up vibe coders/AI's mess. Number #1 clean up? security exploits. AI simply can't do it.
Just look at what happened with the Tea app. I wouldn't trust ANY of these verification providers as far as I could throw them.
The BEST thing the user can do right now is use VPN's. Mullvad, Proton, Self Host Wireguard, whatever. DO NOT GIVE ANY OF THESE PLACES YOUR ID.
@Intellectual_Resistance The idea of a VPN ban was suggested by Heidi Alexander MP, but downplayed by the Secretary of State, Peter Kyle MP. While a ban isn’t government policy atm, they’ve just threatened platforms with fines for promoting VPNs to UK under 18s. It’s a moving situation and this latest announcement does little to dampen rumours of a ban.

I don’t even think a private company SHOULD be allowed to run an age-verification service!
Critical matters private personal information should be exclusively handled by the state, with independent security audits mandatory.
You hand that data over to the private sector once, it’s going to be hacked or sold and that’s it, and you can’t vote the fuckers out who fucked it up.
Lights are going out across the Net for UK users.
Age verification is driving sites to shut down, geo-block the UK or restrict features and content.

@david_colquhoun Again, this won't protect children in the first place because it's trivial to circumvent. It will, however, give criminals a new opportunity to trick people into giving them sensitive information. I've already seen malicious replies on Mastodon telling people they need to verify their accounts.
Please: if you see one of these, don't take it at face value. Be similarly cautious if something like it pops up anywhere else.
@david_colquhoun Far-right conspiracy? You really have got it arse about face haven't you?
It's about SURVEILLANCE. Porn is just an 'Oh won't somebody think of the children' tag line, that The DM and it's brethren scream about, all the while showing a 'hot' woman in a skimpy garment, or sharing the details of a gay footballer's antics in a hotel room.

there is a way to remove pre-installed applications, but you either have to root the phone, or remove them via Android Debug Bridge (adb).
Both of these approaches require technical knowledge, and for people to know of their existence, which most do not.

I understand this shouldn't be the way to deal with this but here's a great guide for anyone looking to permanently remove apps that only allow disabling. You can also use an app like MalwareBytes to view system apps and get their names for removal.

another issue with not being able to uninstall is that code stays there, with all its security flaws, indefinitely. It only gets patched/updates if it's enabled.
For the non-technical folks that means it might be able to allow someone who's gotten a toe hold on the device to then use that code to escalate privileges.

these 1 frame walls of text are killing me though, will need to just extract the thing…

I paused on every single message because it's golden. That's what we get when we let corporations spoon-feed us whatever shit they want.
Out of curiosity I've loaded an open source LLM I have around, to see how it autocompletes from "fuck" onward, and even without "fuck" it's negative every single time.
What is crazy to me is that people is letting their data be constantly sent over the internet to who knows where, all to get a useless prediction.

this is exactly what I felt after trying to write a bug report in the IntelliJ bug tracking tool this morning.
I'd love to hear from anyone who thinks this is a useful thing.
This update has a LOT of changes and fixes in it! I think I got in everything everyone who gave me feedback asked for (check the README file "Changelog" section for details). Lots of attention paid to making buttons, tabs, and drop-down appearance consistent, and lots of new CSS variables for customization plus a new option for customizing Bookface (more on that in a moment).
Bookface 1.8 has been tested with both the current stable 2024.12 and 2025.7 Release Candidate versions.
The most obvious change you'll probably notice is that the responses below posts and comments now look completely different:
And below an Event Post:
If multiple people engaged with the post in a certain way you no longer have to click the count to see the list, it's a popover that appears on hover (active on touch devices). This is a lot cleaner and more consistent with how these are displayed on other social media platforms.
You'll also notice that the Main Menu missing icons are in place. This is a change that's coming in the next Friendica release anyway, but Bookface lets you have it right now:
Someone specifically asked whether the main navigation buttons could have labels on them:
I didn't turn it on by default, but nav button labels are now coded into Bookface and if you're using CSS variable customization they're easy to turn on:
:root {
--show-navbar-labels: block;
}The label text is also customizable. Until now the only way to implement such customizations was either for a server admin to manually put them into the header or footer sitewide or for individual users to put them in a user content stylesheet just for your web browser. That's why I'm also releasing a new Friendica addon called "Bookface Custom" that, if your server admin installs it, allows you to customized every one of the Bookface CSS variables to your heart's content.
Get 'em while they're hot:
* Bookface 1.8
* Bookface User Styles 1.8
* Bookface Custom Addon 1.0

Good work! I updated Bookface for Friendica.World.
One remark, when trying to write this comment, I tried clicking the 'comment' icon, moving the mouse from below. The new popup for the list of people that liked the post, blocked the comment button. I don't know if there's a solution for this..

Main branch updated to 1.8.1 to fix "Notices" navbar label not using CSS variable. Not an issue for anyone who isn't using Navbar Labels, which are not enabled by default.
If you don't want to wait for the next release the Main branch should always be the most current as people point out things to me and I fix them on GitLab (which should automatically get mirrored to the GitHub repo).

I agree that it does take up a lot of space, because I made the icons larger and added more white space for a cleaner, more modern look. Everything in Frio is too tiny and compact and cluttered. It doesn't help that Friendica just has a LOT of controls. Too many IMO. It's kind of overwhelming to new users.
For smaller displays when you get below 768 pixels wide it engages the mobile interface. There's some overlap between desktop and tablet landscape making it impossible to discern which it is, and for most tablets in portrait I chose to display a compact version of the desktop bars to keep the position of controls consistent if you change tablet orientation.
It is technically possible to merge the two bars into one (actually make them 50% screen width and positioned seamlessly side-by-side) for really wide screens, but there's just too much stuff there to do that for a smaller screen. And the sub-section words in the second toolbar can be really short in some languages or really long in others.
You could try zooming in until the mobile interface kicks in. Though it doesn't really save that much space as there are still two toolbars, they just aren't both at the top.

General reminder:
The domain name putty.org is *NOT* run by the #PuTTY developers. It is run by somebody not associated with us, who uses the domain to interpose advertising for their unrelated commercial products. We do not endorse those products in any way, and we have never given any kind of agreement for PuTTY's name to be used in promoting them.
Please do not perpetuate the claim that putty.org is the PuTTY website. If anyone is linking to it on that basis, please change the link. The PuTTY website is chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtath… and it always has been.
You can check this by downloading the source code, which cites that URL in many places (the README, the documentation, some strings in the actual code), or by using the "Visit Web Site" menu options in the official Windows binaries (the ones signed with my personal Authenticode certificate). The true PuTTY website is the one that PuTTY itself says it is.
Many search engines list putty.org above chiark. I don't know if this is due to active SEO on the part of the domain owner, or a heuristic in the rankings. Either way, don't believe them. It's not our site.

thanks for putty
it is essential software literally everywhere I've been
🤩
very goob software we love you
@saxnot yes, with hindsight it was a mistake not to grab putty.org at the earliest opportunity, before some other opportunist did. But then PuTTY never *aimed* to become widely known. Its fame grew gradually by word of mouth, so it was never quite clear when it would be a good idea to get the most obvious domain – until it was too late.
The chiark URL is of a type that was very common in the 90s, especially for software published by someone who didn't yet know whether it would have more than a dozen users – which was exactly the situation when I started!
@ArneBab At this point, it would be absolutely the right thing to get the domain back, one way or another.
(Probably register the trademark first if that isn't too expensive, then ask nicely, and then get out the lawyers)
@Sobex @ArneBab@rollenspiel.social I'd like nothing better, but I think I'd have to _start_ with a lawyer, just to get any idea at all of where to begin. I did try contacting one once, but they never replied to my query.
For example, I have no idea whether it _is_ the right strategy to start by registering the trademark, or how to do that, or even which country to do it in. (I'm guessing the USA, because it's .org and not .org.[country] – but _I'm_ not in the USA, so can I register a trademark there at all?)
@Gargron @Sobex One potential obstacle I can see right away is that "putty" is something of a generic term which might make it untrademarkable. Also, "Silly Putty" is a registered trademark (owned by Crayola) and you very well might run into a roadblock there.
You might have to modify the name of the project to something that a Trademark office might consider unique enough to trademark.
But yeah as Gargron as noted, there are services available to help with this process.
@Sobex to be fair, it could be worse. they link to your site at the top and then also a couple other products which they make clear are not yours.
(unless I am missing a lot of ads because I block 'em.)
I think you should absolutely lawyer up and file a WIPO Domain Name Dispute Resolution complaint. wipo.int/amc/en/domains/
"When your brand is misused to deceive consumers online (also known as “cybersquatting”), WIPO – the global leader in domain name dispute resolution – can help you reclaim the infringing domain name using an online enforcement tool called the UDRP or a national “ccTLD” variant."
Avoid court proceedings by using the WIPO Arbitration and Mediation Center's domain name dispute resolution services.www.wipo.int
Typically if brand name is registered after domain, there is no chance getting a domain other than buying it from owner. Unless you can prove your unregistered trade mark is well known and that current domain owner is referencing to your brand and not some similar.
In short, always register domain and then registered trade mark/name afterwards before getting your brand public
In that case it is more than possible to get the domain
@jeffmcneill the project history went through three phases:
1. no idea yet whether this is going to be a widely used tool
2. domain names cost money and admin faff, search engines can find our website anyway, on balance doesn't seem worth it
3. too late
@jeffmcneill firstly, thanks for making Putty! I love it.
Secondly, perhaps putty.some-other-tld is still available?
even before Github was owned by MS, I didn't like the look of it.
Partly because it's not itself free software: unlike Gitlab, if you want to export your project with all its metadata like the bug database, you can't make a compatible instance to move it to. If you can see the vendor lock-in coming _before_ you're already committed, avoid it.
And partly _because_ it was trying so hard to make itself the One True Place. There shouldn't _be_ a One True Place. As soon as there is, someone can buy it out and monetise / enshittify / generally do bad things with it.
I'd rather contribute to the Internet being distributed, than contribute to it being centralised. That's why I'm on Mastodon and was never on the birdsite, and it's why I don't use Github (except for sending patches to projects that are already hosted there).
Alexander Dyas reshared this.
The internet in particular, and the worldwide adoption of new technology in general, are well broken at this point. Yours is a perfect example of this.
Perhaps we need a TLD where you don't even have to apply for a name: you become automatically associated with an address by implication, and become free to use it as needed.
There are a huge number of imitators (mostly malicious) of popular piracy site "fitgirl", and likewise everything you get from there has the right URL plastered over it in all possible places.
Clearly you should agree with her that she'll mention the PuTTY URL and you'll tell people where to yarr games. 😀
I'm assuming this site also isn't you folks?
the.earth.li/~sgtatham/putty/0…
I've found them because they provide versions for older versions of Windows, but wasn't sure if it was related, because of the username.
The TLD .org once had rules that would have prevented this.
Now a local butcher has a .org address for his shop. 🙁
This seems like a self inflicted issue. And it seriously points to the project and it's leaders in poor decision making. Especially after what, 26 years?
Not sure why you are even bothering with this at this point as it appears you will ignore all the sound advice of the community.
It should be absolutely no surprise to anybody that <keyword>.tld ranks higher than some extremely deep URL nobody can remember.
I'd suggest buying putty.something and moving the website there instead, that should fix the problem.
Well... PuTTY more or less belongs on the "WHO Essential Medicines List" for (windows) computing now...
It's partly due to stuff like these:
stackoverflow.com/a/31137173/3…
stackoverflow.com/a/33270560/3…
stackoverflow.com/a/57087567/3…
That's just some of the results from the 2 StackExchange sites that I checked. There are several other StackExchanges which are ripe candidates for people hyperlinking (or mentioning) putty.org and StackExchange does tend to carry weight with search engines.
@helioloureiroBR with all due respect, I never understood why don’t you just register something like puttyterminal.net and go with it, it would quickly surpass the bogus website on search engines
If a tutorial tells a user to download Putty and they google it, they will for sure think the official URL is a scam.

to be fair, this reads like an Onion article. How long has PuTTY been around, and been awesome, for it not to have its own actual domain for a few bucks per year?
putty-term.org? putty.org.uk? Just anything other than someone's tilde account on an obscure subdomain!

On this day 35 years ago, TGV unit 325 set the land speed record at 515.3 km/h on the LGV Atlantique. This beat the previous record set by the same train on the 5th December 1989 of 482 km/h
Both these records managed to surpass the record set by an experimental ICE prototype in West Germany in 1988, which was 406.9 km/h on the Hannover-Würzburg line, thus establishing French engineering as superior to the German, at least on speed.
This record stayed current until 2007, when SNCF topped this with a TGV POS setting the new record at 568 and then 574,8 km/h.
TGV 325 is now decommissioned, and is kept at the Cité du Train in Mulhouse.

You’re not wrong. Decided once a few years back to do Amtrak over driving for a trip and it took 4x longer than driving, and the train broke down at one point.
Even when it was going there were times where I could have got out and sprinted on foot faster.
@moof Similarly in Australia. Our fastest long-distance trains, the Sydney-Melbourne and -Brisbane ones are based on the British Rail HST, though run slower than you’d drive the journey due to poor track conditions. High-speed rail has been brought up before every election of the past 40 years, and has by now become a running joke, something like the monorails of the Jetsonian future.
Meanwhile, to our north, Indonesia has a shiny new (Chinese) HSR.
@moof The last two times I tried to catch it, I was informed on the day of departure that the whole train was replaced with buses (with seats only)., due to a shortage of rolling stock or similar. An utter clownshow.
I know of people who successfully have caught it, so maybe I was just spectacularly unlucky.
@moof They need to be run well, within a system that sees value in them and doesn’t regard them as a frippery that’s first to be jettisoned in case of inconvenience.
The Austrian night trains are excellent (I caught several of them a few months ago, would recommend), and the Swedish ones do a good job. The Australian ones have good, if aging, facilities, but seem to get 0 support from the people who run the system, who appear to regard the whole thing as a joke.
@acb @moof 100%. When a bridge on I-95 collapsed due to a fire, the estimate was *months* to repair. Instead, it took less than a week to get traffic flowing (basically Warp 10 in American Infrastructure Repair Time).
When we get a bad thunderstorm, every train line suffers delays over an hour, if not outright cancelation of entire lines, because the power infrastructure is Not Great.
hey now. Amtrak does amazing things with an incredibly dedicated crew on old as hell rolling stock, and more than any other system Ive used they will work their asses off to take care of you, and take care of their very old basically unfunded trains.
That's DB you're thinking of.
@quinn DB could be fixed easily enough; it'd just take a rational government who weren't in hock to BMW/VW/Mercedes—
Oh, wait
@Nicovel0 sncf is pretty great. No system is perfect, but as someone who takes a lot of trains, im pretty happy with sncf. Now, having to route everything through Paris is stupid and terrible, but also extremely French.
Again, is DB you're thinking of.

Yep, noticed! Building out high speed rail requires government backing, and there are powerful opposing interests in the USA—notably landowners/real estate industry—and no powerful proponents.
Could the US interstate highway system be built today? (I suspect not, for the exact same reason.)

Hello,
I am having trouble searching for profiles and groups. Sometimes I get a hit, but other times I don't for the same search.
Also, I start to think the search scope might be affected by where I am in the app, i.e. the Network tab or Home or one of the others.
Can anyone explain this and is there a guide to performing the best search for profiles and groups, both Local and the whole network.
Thanks
Dennis
@Dennis Melhede They're probably from some servers that your server is not aware of, maybe? I'm sometimes copying the direct link to the said group or profile and paste it in the search bar, and repeating the process until it is found. It can take a while if you're the 1st person on your server to find them.
Also, make sure the other server is not blocking your server, and try contacting your server admin as well.
@Dennis Melhede I see. Sadly, I do not have any experience in server administration myself. Maybe subscribe to some relays? I've seen this option floated around sometimes.
Otherwise, as I said, I think it just takes some time for the servers to be aware and the accounts to be found.
How are you trying to search? Using their handle or the direct link to their profile?

To be continued...

Cool!
Why not CC By-SA?
@AAMfP For single illustration, I always found the CC By Sa unclear for one thing: some argue that if you use it for a cover on a copyrighted book project , you can reuse a CC By Sa illustration, because a book is a "composed media" and the text can have another license than the cover. Same for video creation.
Here I consider the content (book/video) as a full entity, not a "composed media". CC By Sa artworks on cover for a book? CC By Sa viral should spread to the book.
Really unclear.

On the value of legible source code for websites, especially personal ones:
“Today's heavily optimized websites have largely killed the "view source" learning experience. The code is minified, bundled, and often incomprehensible to beginners trying to understand how things work.
I got the ick from my own small optimisation. My personal website is small and it isn't an urgent service. It's hardly ever visited from a mobile phone. Maybe I shouldn't be using the little time I have to focus on that side of front-end development in this instance?
But deep down, all I want for my personal website is to give back to the web. I want anyone, regardless of skill level, to inspect elements, understand the structure, and learn from readable code. And I am fully aware my code isn’t perfect. It’s old and there’s a lot of room for improvement.”

ooh! did you know that the most recent version of ruby on rails purposefully doesn't minify your client-side code now?
part of the reason is because http/2 and automatic compression make it less needed overall, but a huge part was also compassion for the curious, and i really hope more of the web becomes a place where that's common again!
