I just read a passage of Doris Lessing's, where she remarked on the similarity between a cat and a fly washing themselves.
I wonder if there are any similarities at all in the neural circuitry.

I will go further: I wonder how old self-cleaning is. is it a bilaterian thing? Does it go back to the first tubes with eyes and a cluster of nerves in their front section?

Goddess, I'm late to this thread, but could I maybe book a me-cleaning robot? I bet the waiting list is huge...
myrmepropagandist reshared this.
Day-to-day, showers are OK. But on a Sunday I love a long hot soak in a deep bath. This totally does not make me weird!
I only know that in mammals, there's huge variation in how much self-cleaning animals do. Cows and dogs do hardly any self-cleaning, while cats are notoriously fastidious.
Also, in birds there is said to be both a learned component and an inate component; birds raised without a role model preen, but do it poorly.
So the total phenomenon could be quite complicated, with some aspects of it ancestral and others not. : )

There is this common feature of ants, cats and people-- all will self clean not just to get clean but also when stressed as a form of self soothing: there is some kind of reward path being exploited for excitement regulation here.
reshared this
I don't know if anyone has proved the thing about ants self-cleaning when stressed; but any antkeeper will tell you that if you move a queen too often, or cause vibrations she'll start cleaning. And if there is too much grooming it's a sign that you need to put her in the dark away from all vibrations and STOP bugging her or she will never lay any eggs.
Also, if you trap an ant it will do this once it realizes it can't get away.

Or whether doth my mind, being crowned with you,
Drink up the monarch's plague, this flattery?
Or whether shall I say, mine eye saith true,
And that your love taught it this alchemy,
To make of monsters and things indigest
Such cherubins as your sweet self resemble,
Creating every bad a perfect best,
As fast as objects to his beams assemble?
O! 'tis the first, 'tis flattery in my seeing,
And my great mind most kingly drinks it up:
Mine eye well knows what with his gust is 'greeing,
And to his palate doth prepare the cup:
If it be poisoned, 'tis the lesser sin
That mine eye loves it and doth first begin.

Purely for a photo op and a bragging media post, Trump minions at the US Army Corps of Engineers have just literally thrown away millions of gallons of #water that farmers in the Central Valley were relying on for later this year. This water will not be captured, will not be useful for cities or farms or firefighting. It is now lost to Californians. There is a small chance some ecosystems will benefit. How ironic.

@mcnado
Why shouldn't California take control of those dams from the Corps of Engineers? If the operators won't close the gates, arrest them for vandalism, public endangerment, theft of a valuable resource, whatever. Those watersheds don't drain into another state or country, so there are no downstream governments to object. Protect Californians from crime.
Texas ignored Federal laws and court rulings, pushed aside Federal enforcement, and took over the Rio Grande.

As with many of these types of news items, there was no follow up in the papers. Cullerton, who died in 1937, could have pulled in favours, or maybe the case never actually made it to court. Unfortunately I can't find out what happened to Ethel.

A 504 is typically because httpd has to much latency connecting to php-fpm, though it can be that php-fpm is having and issue connecting to dbServer. If you have your entire server stack on one machine (or container) you can configure the servers to use sockets instead of TCP/IP This can help when you have congested network traffic. Keep in mind that this still applies if you are only connecting your server stack via local host as it is still effected by they TCP/IP stack.
note: 504 are typically never from client connecting to httpd or you would never see the message, you would just time out.
note: If you need any of this translated to English please feel free to ask questions . I do not think google is up to it.
note: Sockets can also be better for security as this is one less vector of attack on your server from remote.

In general it seems to work. I can follow BlueSky users here. When I like a BlueSky post it shows up at the BlueSky end also.
The option to comment is not active. Reshare en quote share is active. Resharing here at Friendica of that BlueSky post results of a reshare of the contected account at BlueSky. Do not see it here at Friendica itself. Maybe it takes time.
The option to change the handle at blueSky with the Friendica one still does not work.

Let me not to the marriage of true minds
Admit impediments. Love is not love
Which alters when it alteration finds,
Or bends with the remover to remove:
O, no! it is an ever-fixed mark,
That looks on tempests and is never shaken;
It is the star to every wandering bark,
Whose worth's unknown, although his height be taken.
Love's not Time's fool, though rosy lips and cheeks
Within his bending sickle's compass come;
Love alters not with his brief hours and weeks,
But bears it out even to the edge of doom.
If this be error and upon me proved,
I never writ, nor no man ever loved.

A late afternoon 12km trail run at about -11C.
We had a lot more snow, but a few days ago the usual warm "Fön" wind with gusts of more than 100 km/h literally blew it away. At the moment it's just cold, very cold, and it can be quite difficult and even dangerous to run because of the ice that often covers the trails, including wells like the one in the picture.

@stefanonegri @Lee6 Yes, I've thought of that too. As far as I've heard, the biggest disadvantage of spikes is that running on asphalt and similar surfaces, even if only for a while, becomes quite uncomfortable.
But I still want to try it out – what I will probably do is the following with an old pair of #running shoes:

Apart from using the removable spikes like EXOspikes (kahtoola.com/traction/exospike…) you can do the “hack” trick with these here: BestGrip (Swedish brand) best-grip.se/product/bestgrip-…

We're living in the most embarrassing timeline here in the US, barreling full speed ahead toward idiocracy.
The irony is that all the stupid hurts the head of people with a brain, to the point where they really don't want to read the news anymore because it's all so awful. I mean, to be fair the news is usually 95 percent bad, but it's also not usually 95 percent despair.

Thanks for the links. I see that making them into an actual tripod involves lashing them together. I could see doing that if I am stationed somewhere taking lots of pics. But, when taking just a few pics and not having much time for setup (such as a quick selfie at a summit), I find use of a single trekking pole reasonable (although sometimes I can't stick it into the ground which may be solid rock).

Since I left you, mine eye is in my mind;
And that which governs me to go about
Doth part his function and is partly blind,
Seems seeing, but effectually is out;
For it no form delivers to the heart
Of bird, of flower, or shape which it doth latch:
Of his quick objects hath the mind no part,
Nor his own vision holds what it doth catch;
For if it see the rud'st or gentlest sight,
The most sweet favour or deformed'st creature,
The mountain or the sea, the day or night,
The crow, or dove, it shapes them to your feature.
Incapable of more, replete with you,
