FYI whatever version I previously installed would not update, it said there was a problem with the package.
However, deleting and reinstalling worked. Unfortunately I didn't get a screenshot of the error or record the previous app version before uninstalling.
Check out this comment on Loops by @moortaube@loops.video!

Playback works too on new Android APK.But comment input is behind keyboard and everytime I hit a key on it a "refresh" of profile pictures in the given comments is initialized.
is there a way to send you the log?
first bug submitted, but sometimes the app is crashing without reason (I try to upload a big file (~500mb, 3min)

It’s not finished. It’s not perfect. But it’s real. 🥹
Loops is now open, built in public, and growing every day — laying the groundwork for a future where you can build your own TikTok.
A future where governments can’t censor you. Where corporations can’t control the conversation. Where the social web belongs to the people again.
This is how it starts. ✊

Dan, thanks for confirming no telemetry but can I also get you to confirm:
Are there any hooks/code for pushing ads/hashtags/etc? Either opt-in or opt-out?
@jab01701mid this might not be a UI thing.
What instance are you trying to sign up for?
Both getloops.social/ and m.yloops.com/ are more so test instances and don't have registration open, I think.
loops.video is currently the primary instance, and has registration open, but it doesn't have the new Web UI yet. It's coming this week, alongside the mobile app update.
loops.one is an independent instance, and it does have registration open.

Did you code in any process to inject any ads, follows, etc INTO instances?
not having ads has been declared many times by Dan as one of the purposes of this app.
As for injecting follows, it's unclear what you mean, but if it has anything to do with following someone against the will of either side involved, it is against the principles of the fediverse. This makes me wonder why would you even ask such a question. So maybe you meant something else?

I haven't been able to take my usual pleasure in food lately, and so I have been seeking comfort by cocooning myself in scent.
Some perfumes I have loved:
La Casa Azul (DSH Perfumes/Dawn Spencer Hurwitz) - cigarette smoke, cigars, tequila, cognac, jalapeno spice, French perfume, leather, salt, and sex. This. This is the scent I want people to associate with me. It's just so perfectly crafted, so gorgeously androgynous. There is a tomato leaf note in here that pairs fantastically with the smoke and leather facets, creating a balance between bracing and airy, aquatic, and sensually earthy.

How it's going:
After Ralph had to be re-admitted to the emergency hospital on July 4th due to a severe case of bloat, things settled back down and we reached what felt like a tenuous equilibrium - not a place of true calm, but where it no longer felt like constant crisis.
Then a week ago, Ralph started having focal seizures that escalated to generalized seizures his "cluster bluster" medication failed to control, and he had to be admitted to the ER for the third time in three weeks. After returning home, the focal seizures resumed. We eventually learned that he was under-medicated, and after upping his dosages, he returned to his "Roid Ralph the Bark Shark" incarnation. We were glad to see it.
Bella briefly seemed to be doing a little better but then took a downward turn, refusing food and displaying effortful breathing. We took her for a "quality of life" assessment today and discovered she has fluid in her lungs. The vet felt it was worth trying some Lasix and another round of steroids, but we may be looking at saying goodbye to our sweet old lady this week.
For now, we are holding out hope for a miracle.

This Tuber grew a tumor, our Queen B is refusing to eat, and we don't know how much time we have with either of them.
*****
A couple of weeks ago, Bella started refusing to eat - despite appearing hungry and interested in food. We have since been back and forth to our regular vet and an internal medicine specialty clinic. Despite blood work and scans, anti-nausea meds and appetite stimulants, antibiotics and steroids - and a buffet of different foods - we are not closer to answers or a clear path forward.
Then last Friday, out of the blue, Ralph started having seizures. He spent the weekend at the emergency clinic where they were able to stabilize him, and we crossed our fingers for an epilepsy diagnosis. Instead, the MRI revealed a glioma - a type of brain tumor common in Boston Terriers. With palliative care, typical survival time is about a month.
We were devastated.
But Ralph's seizures are currently under control with medication, and we were able to bring him home. He is full of steroids and shenanigans, earning the moniker "Roid Ralph."
He will continue to have seizures, and eventually we will have to make a difficult choice. After weighing our current options, we are considering enrolling him in a clinical trial of mebendazole:
pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/…
We hope it will extend his time with us and also help future dogs and humans.
In the meantime, we are doing our best to keep both Bella and Ralph comfortable and give them the best quality of life possible for whatever time they have left.
ALL THE TREATS. ALL THE SNUGGLES.
Please keep them in your good thoughts.

If you ever do feel able to leave Amazon in the future though, it's good you know there are alternatives 🙂
The main idea of the Fediverse is to prevent this kind of situation, as people can switch servers without leaving the overall network.
I never buy anything from Amazon. I think Goodreads is the only thing in their Empire I use at all.
What we need is a client that lets me post to both and aggregates feeds from both.
I don't think this is possible as Amazon has been shutting down Goodreads's APIs:

A lot of YouTube channels no longer make much in direct monetisation, they often make more from Patreon and sponsorships.
Patreon and sponsorships are platform-neutral, so they can be done on any video platform including PeerTube (for example @thelinuxexperiment mentions sponsors at the start, @michellemay mentions Patreons at the end).

Oh yeah of course, I just mean there is not a technical barrier 🙂
If someone's PeerTube started getting large numbers of views, they would be able to get a sponsor the same way they do on YouTube or any other video platform. And you can have sponsors on multiple platforms, in fact it's probably easier so you can upload the same file everywhere.
Also, patrons are available at any scale, I have patrons for my Fediverse accounts.

There are PeerTube instances for gamers:
video.gamerstavern.online
video.hardlimit.com
video-cave-v2.de (in German)
...but bear in mind these are being paid for by the instance owners. Usually they only cover costs for videos that other people might want to watch.
If you upload only for your own viewing, it seems reasonable to ask for payment? YouTube is only "free" is because it is spying on people and filling videos with advertising (and now it's allowing hate speech).

No law AFAIK, it's just them being greedy and thinking they can make more money by pleasing Trump.
They want government contracts, they want favourable laws in other areas etc, and they see that Trump responds to people who suck up to him, so this is what they do.
I hope the staff at YouTube/Google walk out over things like this, sounds like a horrible company to work for.

Great resource, thanks. Curiously when I googled this, it didn't come up. Also, if I google "peertube xxxxx" xxxx being any other term, it always returns 0 results. I may have to switch to duck duck go.
Thanks though
Thanks for bringing this up by the way, I've now added a link to the forum on the fedi.tips guide.
Don't worry, totally understand the "one thing a time" thing! 🙂
App situation slightly complicated 😅
-There is no Apple TV app, but you may be able to follow PeerTube channels through its Podcasts app (at least you can on the iPhone), more info at fedi.tips/how-to-subscribe-to-…
-There is an iPhone app, but it is severely restricted by bizarre app store rules which don't really suit federated networks. I'd recommend using the website or podcast options as they're not restricted.

It's good to be aware of the options whatever you decide to do.
It's much, much better than it was five years ago. That's why I run this account and the site at fedi.video, to highlight the interesting new stuff appearing on it.

Remove google entirely from our lives. And apple. And Microsoft. I am done. Not another dime, remove, re arrange, uninstall, delete, download, stop.
They arranged it, they paid for it, they slopped cash him, they surveil, they lie, they destroyed search. Among and together they arranged Americas fall, a democracy's fall.
Remove them all. Google microsoft apple
The current hate speach policy page includes "Sex, Gender, or Sexual Orientation"
support.google.com/youtube/ans…
So this seems to just be straight up not true.
Please consider researching any articles you might want to repost as in this case you are spreading misinformation.
Here's what GLAAD (who specialise in protecting LGBTQIA+ rights) says in the linked article:
“YouTube quietly removing ‘gender identity and expression’ from its list of protected groups is a major radical shift away from best practices in the field of trust and safety and content moderation,”
"“If YouTube’s hate speech policy really does still protect people from being targeted with hate on the basis of ‘gender identity,’ the public-facing policy should continue to say that."
Not only this, YouTube also removed this from an example of rule-breaking:
“[Protected group status] is just a form of mental illness that needs to be cured,”
...so they seem to be now allowing people to be accused of mental illness if they are LGBTQIA+ etc.
Accusations of mental illness is how LGBTQIA+ groups have been persecuted, it's why it was illegal in so many countries for so long. Allowing this kind of language is opening the doors for awful and dangerous bigotry.
Let me know if I can help!
If you have a browser on PS5 it should be able to show you PeerTube's web interface?
Darn, okay... 😞
Yeah, to confirm:
PeerTube is NOT blockchain, nothing on the Fediverse is blockchain!
PeerTube and the rest of the Fediverse are just ordinary traditional files on ordinary traditional servers. It is totally possible to delete them if you want to, just like any other file.
It is also possible to ask other servers to carry spare copies of your videos in case your server breaks down, but this is optional and up to the video creator.
On PeerTube videos, they are streamed from the original server even if they have federated elsewhere. The file sizes are so huge, it isn't practical to automatically copy entire videos to other servers the way that text posts are copied.
The only exception to this is if you've asked other servers to make backups of your video so that it can still be played if your server goes down. But this is up to you and totally optional.
It is truly interesting to compare web.archive.org/web/2025011914… with support.google.com/youtube/ans…
Do they not know that this service exists?
Considering this particular service went down just before the US elections last year due to an attack, guessing that at least some people don't like it existing and bringing up what they said before.
It's a long story but basically don't use the app. The rules on app stores aren't suitable for federated networks and have made it very difficult for PeerTube to make an app store app that gets approved.
I'd highly recommend using a server's website and then installing it as a web app, this will give you full access to all the features and bypass the app store restrictions completely. Here's how to install web apps: fedi.tips/how-to-install-web-a…

Go figure. All of us saying that these huge corporations that made token displays of support for the LGBTQ+ community would completely change their tune the second it became more profitable to do so were right all along.
This is why corporations should have *never* been allowed at Pride. That debate had better be fucking settled once and for all at this point.
There is a really good privacy feature on Mastodon and the rest of the Fediverse:
When you post a link on Mastodon etc, it remains exactly as you posted it. There is no analytics or tracking going on, no one is monitoring clicks on links.
By contrast, on Twitter/X and Bluesky the links people post are redirected so clicks can be monitored. We don't know exactly what Musk or Bluesky do with this info, but they do it by redirecting all links to sites they control (t.co & go.bsky.app).

The problem is Bluesky hides this redirect domain. The links you click on look like normal links, you can't see the redirect domain in any way, not even by hovering the mouse over it. Most people probably don't realise they are being redirected.
The only way you know about it is because the redirect URL very briefly flashes on the screen after clicking, and because Bluesky itself said they had introduced this.

@RnDanger Wow, yeah, that's a new one for me too... They're using plain <a href> tags. Must be hooking into the onclick event at a global level or something.
But, since it only applies to the mouse click events, you can right-click there and choose "open in new tab" and that bypasses their tracker.
@TheHCJ
There's nothing to stop Bluesky giving publishers a useful Referer [sic] and legally binding themselves from using that information for marketing.
They just don't.
(They also don't strictly need to use a redirect to track links themselves. But maybe the other way is not as good, idk).
@TheHCJ
I didn't remember that. For privacy-trap purposes, I think it's fair to be cynical. It'd be great to see a non-ad funded model, but it's fairly novel (ignoring user donations).
I was reading the privacy policy. They do allow themselves to use "personal information" for marketing.
Though, it doesn't explicitly say they can share it for marketing purposes. AFAIK, "partners with whom we jointly offer products or services" is not an accepted euphemism for 3rd party ads.
Bluesky have said on multiple occasions they may introduce advertising in the future, and as a for-profit owned by VCs it's very likely they will do this.. This kind of redirect is perfect infrastructure for promotions etc.
pour Bluesky on peut y échapper en faisant un glisser-déposer du lien vers un nouvel onglet, au lieu de cliquer dessus
(par sur Twitter, le lien est raccourci et passe forcément par leur serveur)
I’d always assumed it protected the user from having their profile or group leaked to websites they visit (which is good IMO for privacy if there’s not another way to achieve that). Hadn’t considered Facebook using it for tracking and did not look into getting more website-related metrics from them.
The most blatant tracking, of course, is when social media sites try to map your network of contacts with share IDs tacked onto URLs (or just unique URLs) you share.
Clicking on a direct link doesn't show your profile to websites? I've not heard that before?
Whatever info leaks to a website, it's the same whether you click directly or via a redirect. The redirect just leaks additional info to whoever controls the redirect site.
I didn’t mean that direct links don’t show your profile to websites, of course that would happen if following a link from someone’s profile (at least on the web).
Looking at Google analytics for Facebook referrals in the past, I only saw a redirect URL as the referrer, not the URL of anyone’s profile (same with Twitter). Facebook offered a more private experience by default, so it seemed to make sense to me that way. But it’s quite obvious now that they have nefarious uses for that data with tendrils that spread across the web to collect an entire profile about you.
Ahhh gotcha, now I understand what you mean 🙂

//EDIT: The missing "Attach File" button seems to be a fearue of the Frio/BookFace theme. Other Frio appearance options seem to work. Insights from the BookFace developer in the comments!
Feel free to share the post if you find the instructions helpful. And feel free to correct me, if I missed or misunderstood something!
1. Change the theme to Vrier (the "Attach file" button is not available on the default Frio theme)
2. Start writing a post and press Attach File icon
3. Scroll down to find Upload button
4. Upload your video (at least smallish mp4-files work)
5. Click the filename you just uploaded
6. Finish and share your post!

Hello, I created the Bookface scheme for Frio. I'm not actually part of the Friendica development team. I just made a custom stylesheet.
Sorry for the inconvenience, but it's not a bug. I purposely hid the "File Attachment" button because there is no interface for managing/deleting the files. It only works with relatively small files and even when the upload limit is large it is prone to failing. Also, sometimes you may intend to upload an image and it will be uploaded as a file instead. Rather than expose new users to this incomplete, partially-broken feature, I made a UX design decision to hide the button in Bookface.
According to the Friendica GitHub account the lead developer said "I'd suggest you use PeerTube to post video and reshare from your Friendica account since both support ActivityPub." Presumably people should also be sharing other types of files by putting them on a cloud drive somewhere and sharing a link to the file rather than uploading them to their Friendica account.
Years ago there was a video upload button and section. Those were removed because none of the current Friendica developers have experience with handing video files. IMO if they're not going to add a file manager the File attachment feature should also be removed.

Thank you for your reply and the super interesting insights! I had been wondering about managing my uploaded files. What if I wanted to delete a file for any reason - let's say if I had picked a private file instead of the intended video by mistake. Apparently there is no way to do that.
I'll look into PeerTube for sharing videos!
@Antoine Vinon , here is some insight about the missing button. It makes sense now!

Super happy with my Pixelfed experience overall and have provided some humble support to the project.
However, I've tried several times to import my photos from my old Instagram account (instagram.com/ralphtater/) to my new Pixelfed account (ralphtater@pixelfed.social), and while the bulk of them have come over beautifully, I'm still missing about 28 posts out of 205.
It's only a handful and not a huge loss, but I am curious why these posts won't import. I have not been able to identify a common factor (they're not all one file type - some are photos, some are videos). Any idea what's going on or suggestions for what I could try?
Thank you for your work!

I have set up a number of different Circles, and for the most part, they are working well.
However, when setting up and editing Circles, not all my contacts appear as options to add to the Circle.
Why is this, and is there a work-around or way to fix it?
Thank you!

These aren't deliberate design decisions by BookWyrm, they're doing what they can with the resources they have. It's made by volunteers who depend on donations from users.
You can still set up an account and engage with people, it just wouldn't be designated as a separate section?
