‘Techgiganten zullen er samen met het Witte Huis alles aan doen om hun doel te bereiken’
De Duitse mediawetenschapper Martin Andree windt er geen doekjes om: we moeten in Europa onze poot stijf houden om te voorkomen dat de grote techbedrijven hier alles voor het zeggen krijgen. Big tech zal nergens voor terugdeinzen om zijn macht uit te breiden.
‘Big tech gelooft niet in politiek, niet in democratie, niet in gekozen regeringen. Ze willen daar vanaf. Ze willen geld verdienen en ze willen macht,’ zegt de Duitse mediawetenschapper Martin Andree vlak voor een optreden in Amsterdam.
Andree is de auteur van het boek Big tech muss weg!, dat nu ook in het Engels te koop is. De ondertitel liegt er niet om: Digitale giganten verwoesten onze democratie en economie… Maar wij zullen ze stoppen. (...)

‘Big tech is oppermachtig, bleek uit ons onderzoek. Het internet is veranderd in een dorre vlakte, een kerkhof waar nauwelijks iets gebeurt. En hier en daar staan grote silo’s waar al het verkeer plaatsvindt en waar het geld wordt verdiend,’ zegt Andree. (...)
‘Wij lieten op basis van keiharde cijfers zien hoever ze al zijn gevorderd met de overname van het internet. Dat ze een monopoliepositie hebben verworven die ons medialandschap vernietigt en onze economieën ontwricht. En daar zaten ze niet op te wachten. (...)
Vooraf had Andree niet kunnen bevroeden dat de ondernemingen die hij onderzocht hun dominante marktposities zouden gebruiken om wetenschappelijke publicaties van voor hen onwelgevallige data te voorkomen – en dat in een vrij land als Duitsland. ‘Maar dat is dus wel wat er gebeurde,’ zegt hij.
Een paar dagen na publicatie van de Atlas kreeg hij een bericht van ‘een van de Amerikaanse big tech bedrijven’. De boodschap was duidelijk: ga niet verder. (...)
In Big Tech muss weg!, dat leest als een manifest, beschrijft hij hoe grote techbedrijven hun dominante positie gebruiken om andere spelers uit de markt te drukken. Dat deed Google bijvoorbeeld toen het zijn eigen dienst Google Shopping voortrok in de zoekresultaten. (...)
Andree: ‘Er is sprake van systematische en wijdverspreide ondergraving van eerlijke en vrije competitie. Wat je keer op keer ziet: big tech overtreedt de wet en als ze daarvoor boetes krijgen accepteren ze die. Ze lachen om de bedragen, die maar een schijntje zijn van wat ze jaarlijks aan inkomsten binnenhalen. De Europese Unie en de individuele lidstaten zijn de afgelopen jaren totaal overlopen door de razendsnelle digitale transformatie die gaande is.’
In zijn boek voorspelt Andree dat platformbedrijven over vijf jaar voor een groot deel de plaats hebben ingenomen van de traditionele media, een ontwikkeling die volgens hem fataal is voor democratische samenlevingen. (...)
‘Er zijn eerder boycots geweest, maar de netwerkeffecten waren uiteindelijk altijd sterker. Mensen zijn bang om contact te verliezen met anderen, om niet meer gezien te worden. En dus blijven ze hangen op de grote platforms. Door de feitelijke monopolies is het voor andere partijen moeilijk om een positie te verwerven en zullen er ook nauwelijks investeerders zijn die geld willen steken in dit soort initiatieven. En dus blijven ze klein en zwak.’ (...)
De nieuwe Eurocommissaris voor Digitale Soevereiniteit Henna Virkkunen stelde zich de afgelopen weken strijdbaar op. (...)
Ondanks die strijdbare houding is Andree er nog niet van overtuigd dat Brussel op termijn de rug recht kan houden: ‘Virrkunen gebruikt grote woorden, maar ze moet ook daden laten zien. Vergeet niet dat we in Europa op dit moment vergaand afhankelijk zijn van Google, Facebook en Amazon. En zij willen af van de bemoeizuchtige Europeanen. Wat als die platforms hier op zwart gaan? We moeten dan eerst onze eigen sociale media opbouwen. Accepteren Europese burgers dat ze een paar jaar met inferieure alternatieven opgescheept zitten?’ (...)
Maar met de komst van Trump zijn de kansen gekeerd, de nieuwe president heeft al laten weten dat hij niet veel ziet in het opbreken van Google. ‘Daarom ben ik nu zo gefrustreerd. We bewegen ons in de verkeerde richting, de signalen staan op rood. Trump in het Witte Huis, radicaal-rechts in opkomst in Europa, en ondertussen worden de techbedrijven groter en groter. Ik ben somber.’

How to active the 'BlueSky bridge' to this Friendica instance?
When using the default webbased GUI, set to English;
Go to your menu profile settings (right upper corner).
Select 'settings'
(left side) Go to 'social networks'
Select 'Bluesky import/export'
Here you can configure the settings for Bluesky. This assumes you have an account at Bluesky.
You need to fill in your Bluesky handle. ( Like yourhandle.bsky.socia )
For the 'Bluesky app password' go to the settings of your BlueSky account . Pick 'settings'. Then 'Privacy and security' .
Create a specific password for the BlueSky addon at Friendica

The first line of the section text should indicate succes. When you go later back to this section you will see at the top of that section 'Communication issues with the personal data server service (PDS): '

How to follow a BlueSky account?
Most easy way is to just follow people on the BlueSky platform.
But on Friendica self; go to the 'contacts' section (top menu, people icon)
Left side, option 'Add new contact'
Just add there the BlueSky handle. And press 'connect'.
How to post also to BlueSky?
When you post to Friendica when using the default small compose window you have the option to select to post also on BlueSky in the tab 'permissions'. At least if you enabled that option in the Bluesky addon section.
You can also there select do post by default also to BlueSky. If you post something that is to long for a BlueSky message it will be automatically divided in several Bluesky posts.

Someone said they could follow a bluesky account WITHOUT actually having an account but just "activating the bridge", but does that really work and how??
