Hey, Mastodon! I need some help ... I want to collect the phrase "Hello, World!" in as many different natural languages as possible (i.e. things like Swahili, French, Hindi, etc. - not programming languages!)
If you speak languages other than English or Welsh and you're willing to give me a translation, I'll be extremely grateful. (Ideally you'll be a fluent speaker of any language(s) you contribute - it's important for my project that the examples are correct and idiomatic.)

Now that friendica.world seems (somewhat) stable, there's more to be done 😀
First, we need to setup a test instance so we can test big changes before deploying on the main instance.
Then, we need to move the media storage from the database to S3 (test it first..)
Also, we have configured some VMs which can take part of the Friendica instance so we can scale for better performance, but we need to cutover to that...
Enough to do still!
If there's anyone that would like to join the team and help out, let me know! Basically looking for IT enthousiasts. Some knowledge of Linux is required, knowledge of docker would be nice but can also be taught while doing.
Apart from the tasks mentioned above, we also manage the infra for about 15 other instances so there's always something to do. It's all on a volunteer basis.
We have a nice team going on, we communicate in Slack. DM me if you're interested!!!

@greenpete The more things unfold the more I'm in favour of a wealth tax.
The mechanics will be tricky, and clever accountants will probably find loopholes but even an imperfect wealth tax will start to disempower the giant raging egos that seem to be trashing the world right now.
And we need to disempower them, otherwise they'll wind up killing us all.

IT'S THE WEEKEND! WOOHOO!
Just one Friday Dancer today, as when I tried to add more their feathers got tangled together as well as obscuring the rainbow's message of resistance.
As ever, have a good weekend if you possibly can 😁

BookFace theme
I have added the BookFace theme to friendica.world. This is a variation on the default 'Frio' theme.
BookFace was created by @Pygoscelis Papua.
You can enable it in your Settings > Display > Custom Theme Settings, under Appearance you can now select the bookface light, dark and auto color schemes.

Haló, a Dhomhain
Our normal greeting is God be with you/youse Dia duit/dhaobh
But world is singular, but the phrase should be plural(in my mind anyway)
Dia duit a Dhomhain

Ciao mondo (italian)
Which I can't confirm myself.

So
"Namaste Duniya" IPA: /ˈnʌməsteɪ d̪ʊ.nɪ.jɑː/ (informalish)
"Namamste Vishwa" (more formal) IPA: /ˈnʌməsteɪ/: /wˈɪʃwˈɐ/
i.e. "greetings, world".
Hindi is very close to sanskrit so we have multiple words for similar concepts, as well as gendered grammar rules. IPA might be wrong since I don't know how to use it 😅.

A more natural translation of what is being expressed in the coding sentiment would be
「やっと来たよ!」 which is like saying “Finally, I’ve arrived,” or “It’s finally here!” ✌️

Add this one: A direct translation of "Hello, world!" into any given language presents as idiomatically as it does in English.

I mean, if it doesn't work in your language, you don't have to give it as an example, I guess! There are some great replies explaining the idiomatic difficulties in various languages, which I really appreciate.

’Terve maailma’ of course has a double meaning. So maybe a good message from us to the world ;)

in reply to Dr. Dr. Bethan Tovey-Walsh • • •is Hello World really a great phrase to use? I'm trying to translate it to Swedish but nobe come out naturally. I think this is because it's difficult to actually determine the meaning in English.
The best I can do is to interpret "Hello, World" as me saying Hello, while waving at the entite planet saying "World", just like you'd say "Hello, my friend". But "my friend" is a posessive form, and "world" is not.
So the literal translation in Swedish is "Hej, värld" or "Hej, världen" depending on whether you are referring to "a world" or "the world". But a better version that is closer to the original intent is likely "Hej, hela världen" which means Hello, the whole world.

That's why I think it might not be the best term to use, since I suspect other languages may have an evenharder time with it.
