You’re not wrong. Decided once a few years back to do Amtrak over driving for a trip and it took 4x longer than driving, and the train broke down at one point.
Even when it was going there were times where I could have got out and sprinted on foot faster.
@moof Similarly in Australia. Our fastest long-distance trains, the Sydney-Melbourne and -Brisbane ones are based on the British Rail HST, though run slower than you’d drive the journey due to poor track conditions. High-speed rail has been brought up before every election of the past 40 years, and has by now become a running joke, something like the monorails of the Jetsonian future.
Meanwhile, to our north, Indonesia has a shiny new (Chinese) HSR.
@acb @moof I've ridden the Sydney-Melbourne sleeper twice. The first time was great: the second was a month after the track got washed out and they decanted us onto buses at 3am to finish the journey. Utterly ridiculous governmental incompetence: if the road had been washed out instead it'd have been fixed stat.
@moof The last two times I tried to catch it, I was informed on the day of departure that the whole train was replaced with buses (with seats only)., due to a shortage of rolling stock or similar. An utter clownshow.
I know of people who successfully have caught it, so maybe I was just spectacularly unlucky.
@acb @moof I first caught it in 2007. Second time would have been 2010. Sleeper trains, when they work right, are a good alternative to a night in a hotel and airport frustration: when they go wrong, they're spectacularly terrible.
@moof They need to be run well, within a system that sees value in them and doesn’t regard them as a frippery that’s first to be jettisoned in case of inconvenience.
The Austrian night trains are excellent (I caught several of them a few months ago, would recommend), and the Swedish ones do a good job. The Australian ones have good, if aging, facilities, but seem to get 0 support from the people who run the system, who appear to regard the whole thing as a joke.
@acb @moof 100%. When a bridge on I-95 collapsed due to a fire, the estimate was *months* to repair. Instead, it took less than a week to get traffic flowing (basically Warp 10 in American Infrastructure Repair Time).
When we get a bad thunderstorm, every train line suffers delays over an hour, if not outright cancelation of entire lines, because the power infrastructure is Not Great.
hey now. Amtrak does amazing things with an incredibly dedicated crew on old as hell rolling stock, and more than any other system Ive used they will work their asses off to take care of you, and take care of their very old basically unfunded trains.
One thing that I find quirky about the US is that they love to put a bigger number on something than everybody else did, and at the same time they're a large, mostly empty country where trains have the room to go really fast, and yet they've completely ignored the unofficial worldwide race to have the fastest train in commercial service.
@quinn @Nicovel0 "Routing everything through [insert capital city here]" was a Thing in the mid-19th century; see also London. Germany *mostly* escaped because it unified relatively late but that's the best thing I can say about DB.
@Nicovel0 sncf is pretty great. No system is perfect, but as someone who takes a lot of trains, im pretty happy with sncf. Now, having to route everything through Paris is stupid and terrible, but also extremely French.
Yep, noticed! Building out high speed rail requires government backing, and there are powerful opposing interests in the USA—notably landowners/real estate industry—and no powerful proponents.
Could the US interstate highway system be built today? (I suspect not, for the exact same reason.)
There's also "the second mover advantage", aka why everyone else got better colour TV and cellphones than the USA (who got them first but worse).

I feel that China might have a forward-looking plan, perhaps for the next 100 years, whereas America currently seems to be looking back to the old days.
@moof we know, unfortunately our rail system is privately owned and Amtrak has to rent access from commercial freight lines, so yet another public/private partnership death spiral.
@moof there is one good section of rail in the US and it’s the DC to Boston corridor. It’s not great but can’t be replaced with bus or flight traffic, since there’s no other way to move as many people as it does.
@mrzarquon @moof I know: I've caught the Acela between Boston and NYC several times. Nice trains, but the track is a bitter joke by European high speed rail standards—not even up to British spec (lack of grade separation, i.e. there are level crossings, IIRC).
@Nicovel0 @quinn Look at a heat map of railway funding in the UK and your eyes will fall out. London gets about 70% of the entire national transport infrastructure budget.
(I now have an over-60 railcard, which helps considerably: it's still not cheap but it's now price competitive with flying, and far less annoying.)
UK's real problem is we sold all our railways to … foreign national rail operators! Who run them as a profit-taking business at our expense, to subsidize their domestic routes.

@Nicovel0 @quinn And for extra silliness, train stations in Paris are terminal stations so in many cases you have to push your way to another part of the city to make the connection. Because obviously why would anyone ever go elsewhere after coming to Paris. Still, even with that sncf is a lot of value and a significant contributor to the quality of life here.
@seachaint Yes: and you'll note that Musk later confessed that he was only boosting hyperloop as a spoiler against the California high speed rail project, which he thought might eat into Tesla's sales. (Why he thought that, I have no idea:the use case for a city-to-city high speed rail network doesn't have much overlap with "I need a car to commute to work and do the grocery shopping; I occasionally drive long distances.")
@seachaint Because Los Angeles was investing massively in improving its transit at the same time (it’s now very good and effective by US standards). The Bay Area already had pretty decent transit by American standards. Really good train service in between the two could actually get people to give up their cars.
On April 9, Colorado Governor Jared Polis announced that Swisspod, a company focused on pioneering high-speed, emission-free Hyperloop transportation, will be expanding its footprint in Colorado.
High speed rail would be great between Los Angeles and Las Vegas. It has the benefit of being mostly empty land, so less need for costly and lengthy battles over right of way.
@marcink @Nicovel0 @quinn IIRC London's CrossRail project cost significantly more in real terms than the Channel Tunnel and HS1 line. Some tens of billions.

Regular service passenger rail had a higher typical speed here in the US back when it was steam-powered. We’re even building a new steam locomotive with plans to use it to set a new speed record.
I live in a city that is heavily served by Amtrak, and here's a few thoughts: 1. Cost me $70 round trip to go to a city 2 hours away. Yikes. 2. Regional Rail is in financial straights and their answer is to close all the lines they rent from Amtrak (around 1/2 of them). Amtrak raised the rents because SURPRISE financial straights. 3. This is going to put a) way note cars on over-capacity highways and b) a lot of people out of work.
!Friendica Support Hello, I am having trouble searching for profiles and groups. Sometimes I get a hit, but other times I don't for the same search. Also, I start to think the search scope might be affected by where I am in the app, i.e. the Network tab or Home or one of the others. Can anyone explain this and is there a guide to performing the best search for profiles and groups, both Local and the whole network.
@Dennis Melhede They're probably from some servers that your server is not aware of, maybe? I'm sometimes copying the direct link to the said group or profile and paste it in the search bar, and repeating the process until it is found. It can take a while if you're the 1st person on your server to find them.
Also, make sure the other server is not blocking your server, and try contacting your server admin as well.
@Dennis Melhede I see. Sadly, I do not have any experience in server administration myself. Maybe subscribe to some relays? I've seen this option floated around sometimes.
Otherwise, as I said, I think it just takes some time for the servers to be aware and the accounts to be found.
How are you trying to search? Using their handle or the direct link to their profile?
@Dennis Melhede try this as well. And try for multiple times too if at first is not found. Also, for groups you can search with ! instead of a @ as well.

Je suis depuis 2022 sur Mastodon, et j'y suis plutôt pas mal. Je voulais réfléchir sur mon usage de Mastodon car j'ai plusieurs copaines qui ont entendu parler de Mastodon mais qui n'ont pas franchi le pas et qui voulaient en savoir un peu plus. Alors, pourquoi Mastodon ? Pour répondre à cette question, j'ai eu besoin de revenir un peu sur mon histoire sur les internets. Comme ce billet devenait vraiment trop long, je l'ai coupé pour mettre la partie historique de mon usage nombriliste d'internet sur un autre article de blog.

Et puis j'y passais surement un peu trop de temps. Je me rappelle que certaines personnes partaient déjà de Mastodon, mais ça me paraissait un truc de geek
La migration de 2022
En 2022, Musk rachète Twitter et commence à en faire n'importe quoi. Je me rappelle que ça m'avait fâchée, mais je ne sais plus exactement ce qui a été le déclencheur. Je me rappelle aussi que plein de personnes migraient vers Mastodon et donnaient plein de conseils. Ça donnait l'impression que c'était compliqué, un truc de spécialiste. Je me rappelle que le fait de devoir choisir une instance / un serveur était vraiment un point de blocage pour moi. J'ai une tendance à avoir besoin de tout comparer, de tout bien réfléchir quand je dois choisir parmi plusieurs options. Et puis un jour j'ai fait un petit comparatif des instances, et j'ai choisi chapril. Je trouvais le nom marrant, et puis il y avait des personnes que je connaissais qui avaient choisi cette instance. J'ai créé mon premier compte Mastodon. D'ailleurs, j'ai depuis rédigé un article de blog pour présenter différentes instances, et surtout désacraliser ce choix !
Au début, comme tout le monde l'a dit, c'était calme. Comme il n'y a pas d'algorithme qui te propose du contenu, tu ne vois rien si tu ne suis pas des gens. J'ai donc suivi des gens.
J'ai commencé par rechercher les gens que je connaissais de Twitter, à la mano. Maintenant il y a un outil pour faire ça (HelloQuitX je crois).
Puis j'ai suivi les gens qui répondaient des trucs marrants aux gens que je suivais déjà.
Et déjà, c'était moins calme 😆. Je suis tombée dans une petite communauté avec un peu le même esprit que sur Twitter, mais en plus bienveillant.
J'ai commencé à pouetter comme on dit sur Mastodon :
Des trucs de la vie de tous les jours en mode micro-blogging, et de nombreuses râleries sur les #JeanMichelBoomer
Des photos de mon chat (#CatsOfMastodon) ou de mon chien (#DogsOfMastodon) ou de mon jardin (#FleurisTonFil). Sur Mastodon, la règle c'est de mettre un ALT, c'est-à-dire une description de la photo pour que les personnes qui voient mal ou pas puissent avoir accès au média avec leur lecteur.
Quelques trucs de travail en mode vulgarisation, un peu de #BiblioDidactique, un peu d'écologie. Souvent, ça n'intéresse pas grand monde, mais parfois ça suscite des échanges intéressants 🙂.
Des réponses aux pouets des copaines, pour montrer qu'on les lit, qu'on comprend leurs peines et leurs joies, pour répondre à des questions quand on a une réponse, et évidemment... pour blaguer un peu 😎. L'humour est vraiment l'une des choses qui me plait sur ces réseaux sociaux.
Et évidemment des partages des pouets chouettes parce que sur Mastodon, l'algorithme c'est toi. Repartager les pouets permet aux gens qui te suivent de découvrir ce contenu.
Et j'ai commencé aussi à être un peu suivie.
Façonner ma TL
Il y avait beaucoup beaucoup de geeks qui installent des distributions linux et qui font du gravel le week-end dans mon fil.
Comme depuis Twitter je me suis un peu beaucoup sensibilisée aux questions féministes, j'ai décidé d'orienter ma TL (oui, je dis encore TL pour TweetList comme sur twitter... 😬). Voici quelques unes des pratiques qui m'ont aidé à avoir un fil qui me plait pas mal.
Une règle pour “suivre” les gens
Sur Mastodon, c'est classique d'appliquer la règle du “Follow-back” : si tu me suis, alors je te suis. Beaucoup de personnes appliquent cette règle à condition que ton compte ne soit pas vide, que tu aies une bio et un message d'introduction avec le mot-clé #IntroductionFR qu'il est d'usage d'épingler à son profil (le message, pas le mot clé !).
Pour ma part, j'ai décidé de suivre une règle un peu différente pour choisir les comptes auxquels je m'abonne.
J'applique la règle Follow-back pour les femmes ou les personnes queer ou racisées,
et je ne l'applique pas, ou très rarement, avec les hommes blancs cis. Je vais attendre qu'on interagisse un peu.
Le blocage facile
J'ai aussi pris l'habitude de bloquer très facilement les personnes que je trouve trop désagréables avec des copaines ou avec moi. Le profil type que je bloque, c'est le militant insoumis ou anti-spécistes agressif et condescendant.
Lutter contre le contenu qui ne me plait pas
Quand je vois un contenu qui ne me plait pas, je me demande comment il est arrivé sur mon fil. Trois options :
C'est quelqu'un que je suis. Je mets alors une petite note sur le profil (on a cette option sur mastodon) qui dit : “pénible”. Si quand j'ouvre le profil de la personne, j'ai déjà mis la petite note, alors j'arrête de lea suivre.
C'est un partage de quelqu'un que je suis. Dans ce cas je clique sur le profil de la personne, et je clique sur : Masquer les partages de ...
C'est un hashtag auquel je suis abonnée. Alors je réfléchis... Est-ce que je veux me désabonner de ce hashtag ? Mon cas de conscience actuel est le hastag #Vegan. Plein de recettes chouettes, pleins de militants pénibles.
Afficher du contenu qui me plait
Et pour avoir du contenu qui me plait, je suis certains hashtags : #BiblioDidactique (je crois qu'actuellement j'en suis la seule utilisatrice), #feminisme, #LesEcologistes, #jardinierdudimanche, #bordeaux, #HorsesOfMastodon. En vrai, je n'utilise pas plus que ça l'option de suivre des hashtag car je vais plus sur mastodon pour les interactions entre humain·es que pour suivre des sujets...
Mon usage de Mastodon aujourd'hui
Aujourd'hui, je passe environ une heure et demi sur Mastodon par jour. Je le sais car j'ai mis un bloqueur de temps pour l'application Tusky avec laquelle je vais sur Mastodon sur mon téléphone à 1h30. Je l'atteins environ une ou deux fois par semaine, mais je vais aussi sur Mastodon par mon ordinateur.
Un compte « officiel » et un compte anonyme
En 2024, j'ai changé d'instance, c'est-à-dire de serveur. J'avais envie de me créer un compte un peu plus pro, pour parler à visage découvert, et un compte plus confidentiel, anonyme, pour partager avec un plus petit réseau de trucs plus perso. Pour le compte pro, je suis allée sur l'instance sciences.re car c'est une instance qui regroupe pas mal de scientifiques, et c'est souvent de là où je parle. En vrai, les instances c'est pas si important. J'en ai parlé un peu plus dans un billet un peu plus technique. Ce qu'il faut retenir, c'est que si tu ne veux pas te prendre la tête, tu peux aller sur piaille.fr.
On ne va pas trop se mentir, quand j'ouvre Mastodon, le premier truc que je regarde, ce sont mes notifications.
Ce que je préfère, ce sont les mentions. Ça veut dire que quelqu'un m'a parlé, et que je vais pouvoir répondre. 9 fois sur 10, c'est chouette. Parfois c'est un·e relou·e, mais c'est rare. Donc si tu viens sur Mastodon, viens papoter, ça me fera super plaisir.
Ensuite, ce sont les partages. Je me dis : « Chouette, ce que j'ai dit t'a paru suffisamment intéressant pour le repartager ! »
Et enfin, les likes / favoris. C'est bien parce qu'on se dit : « Tiens quelqu'un·e m'a lue et me le fait savoir, merci copaine ». On a moins l'impression de parler dans le vide.
J'interagis aussi évidemment en répondant aux messages des copaines qui racontent leur quotidien et qui posent des questions. Et en racontant moi aussi un peu ma vie (ce qui m'amuse ou qui m'énerve)...
Poser des questions
Un truc que j'adore sur Mastodon, c'est de raconter une situation qui m'est arrivée, et de demander aux autres comment iels auraient réagi. Je suis toujours surprise de réparties auxquelles je n'aurais pas pensés. Et puis, c'est marrant de voir comment aurait réagi un homme blanc et ça me décomplexe un peu.
Et je pose aussi des questions sur un peu tout et n'importe quoi #MastoHelp, et j'ai toujours des réponses intéressantes.
Qu'est-ce qu'il faut penser de cette nouvelle application de messagerie bretonne treebal qui se dit écolo ?
Vous avez des recos de livres sur l'histoire des sciences pour un ado de 14 ans ?
Un peu de distraction de gauchiste
J'ouvre mastodon le matin sur mon téléphone pour me réveiller doucement. Je vois en général surtout des messages de la nuit, donc de ce qui s'est passé aux USA et au Canada, et puis des copaines qui ont mal dormi 😬. Je regarde aussi quasi-systématiquement le soir en me couchant.
Je suis abonnée à quelques journaux comme Mediapart ou LeMonde, ça me fait ma petite revue de presse de gauche. C'est le truc que j'ai oublié de dire depuis le début, alors que c'est l'une des plus grandes qualités de Mastodon : c'est un réseau social de gauchistes 🤩 !
Des recos
Sur mastodon, je me cultive en lisant quelques articles de blogs ou de presse partagés par les personnes que je suis. Et un truc chouette, c'est qu'il y a beaucoup de recommandations ! J'aime beaucoup le Hashtag #VendrediLecture par exemple.
Donc quand je tombe sur une reco qui me parle, je bookmarque. Mettre un signet sur un message (un pouet ou un toot selon les instances) permet de le retrouver facilement plus tard. De temps en temps je parcours mes signets et je mets à jour ma liste de livres à lire et de films et de séries à regarder, et de podcasts à écouter.
Partager mon travail
J'essaie de faire des fils / threads une fois par semaine pour parler un peu de mon travail : les sciences de l'éducation et la formation au sens large. Ça fait un peu partie de mon plan de com' global pour ma petite auto-entreprise, et je publie en général un contenu un peu similaire sur Linkedin et sur Mastodon. Maintenant, comme je le disais dans l'article sur comment quitter Facebook, j'essaie que les infos un peu intéressantes soient aussi dans un article de blog. Parfois, c'est plus spontané, je lis un article, et je partage en utilisant le hashtag #BiblioDidactique. Ou bien je partage juste mon quotidien au travail.
Militer un peu
Je partage aussi autour de mes lectures, ou de ce que j'écris sur les sujets de société qui me tiennent à cœur : le féminisme, l'écologie, la cuisine végétarienne, le numérique hors gafam...
Petite liste de mes plaisirs sur Mastodon
Ça va faire 3 ans que je suis sur Mastodon, et globalement, c'est une plateforme dont je suis très contente. Je voulais faire une petite liste à la Prévert des petits plaisirs de Mastodon :
Pas de publicité. C'est con à dire mais c'est vraiment trop bien. Je vis à la campagne, je surfe sur Mozilla avec un bloqueur de pub, et je traine sur Mastodon. J'ai perdu l'habitude d'être agressée par de la pub non sollicitée partout et ... pffff... c'est BIEN.
Des copaines. Sur mastodon on peut vraiment se faire des copaines, voir même des amies. On se soutient, on s'écoute, on se rend des services. C'est ... bien 🥰.
De la bienveillance et de l'humilité. Alors oui, ya du mansplaining et de la pureté militante : ça reste un réseau social avec beaucoup d'informaticiens ou de cyclistes hommes blancs ou de vegan hommes blancs, mais globalement, il y en a beaucoup qui sont éduqués sur ces questions. J'ai souvent lu : « est-ce que tu écris pour avoir du soutien ou tu souhaites avoir aussi des conseils ? ». Ou bien « Tu en sais probablement déjà beaucoup sur le sujet, mais ... ».
De la poésie et un peu de beauté. Ce n'est pas du tout ce que je venais chercher, mais #FleurisTonFil, #SilentSunday, #Caturday sont des hashtags qui font du bien à ton fil. J'ai par contre masqué #Mastobaba 😬.
De l'humour et de la rigolade. On cite évidemment la grande Scu , mais j'aime surtout les échanges de pouet où on enchaîne sur des mauvaises définitions d'un mot, ou bien le hashtag #Ironeme où l'on détourne des expressions toutes faites.
Une fenêtre d'overton enfin tirée à gauche. Ya plein de gens très engagés sur Mastodon. J'ai l'impression que les gens passent leur vie en manif (ou à faire du vélo), à lire des livres féministes trop intéressant et à cuisiner vegan. Parfois c'est un peu pénible car certains sont assez Yakafokon ou pureté militante, mais au quotidien, ça fait quand même du bien. Ça change de Linkedin on va dire.
Il n'y a pas une infinité de messages à lire, au moins sur mon fil principal. Alors je mets cet argument à la fin car c'était surtout vrai à mes débuts sur mastodon. Au début, comme tu ne suis qu'un petit nombre de personnes, bah il n'y a qu'un petit nombre de messages à lire. En 20 minutes, pouf, j'avais tout vu. C'est beaucoup moins addictif que les réseaux sociaux à algorithmes et j'aimais beaucoup ça. Sur mon compte, pro, ça n'est plus du tout le cas. C'est aussi pour ça que je me suis recréé un petit compte anonyme pour n'y suivre pas grand monde, et retrouver ce côté fini.
On entend souvent dire, sur les réseaux sociaux, qu’il est facile de mettre une alternative à une image pour qu’elle soit accessible. Pourtant, il y a de nombreux types d’images différents et la façon de les rendre accessibles peut varier.

Je suis un peu sur les mêmes interrogations, parce que marre d'avoir des micro agressions sur FB (genre hier, sous un post que j'avais fait en soutien à Harmonie Lecerf qui datait de plusieurs jours : "Mince, les groupies de Robespierrette ont encore perdu" : mais pourquoi ??). Bref, j'ai créé un compte Friendica, qui a l'avantage de faire le lien avec le compte masto. Et vous ?

@syd95 : moi j’y vois de la discrimination positive.
Les hommes blancs geeks cisgenre étant surreprésentés un peu partout et surtout sur une plateforme technique, il est logique de tenter de faire ressortir d’autres voix même si, au début, il faut faire cela artificiellement.

Same for video creation.
Here I consider the content (book/video) as a full entity, not a "composed media". CC By Sa artworks on cover for a book? CC By Sa viral should spread to the book.

If you live and breathe the terminal, then you are no doubt using a terminal multiplexer like GNU screen or tmux. But why not replace it with 100% all-natural Emacs? It can do everything your favorite multiplexer can do --- it can even edit text.
Unfortunately, there seems to be a bug in our recent 136.0-1 release; the LW settings page does not properly reflect the state of the settings. While this does not seem to be a very "consequential" bug (eg. not negatively influencing hardening, etc.), it's certainly not great - we are sorry about that!
We are looking into it and will try to get it addressed swiftly, and update this post with the progress.

"Old and alone" are two connotations no one wants to have any associations with. It's negative and hints thats you're washed up and no longer useful to anyone. And no other horrible term defines that as the phrase "cat lady", carrying the stigma that you're "old" because you have no friends but cats and they're the only ones who can fulfill your loneliness.
!Friendica Support I #boosted a #toot on floss.social this morning and saw it appear in friendica.world one minute later. I then #unboosted that same toot on floss.social. I expected the toot to disappear from friendica, but it still shows, saying that I reshared it. Is this normal behaviour or is my friendica.world instance messing up? I'd expect the toot to disappear, or at least the mention that I reshared the toot to disappear.
As far as I remember, the server sends a signal to the network that a message has been removed. Because the recipients created a copy of this message, it's left up to them how they deal with it. This requires cooperation and if different platforms are involved, then there can be misinterpretation or the feature simply isn't implemented yet.

It's good to have a few different browsers for website testing. I have an assortment of different browser profiles too. I use dedicated profiles mostly to keep Gahoogle and Zuckland noses out of my business.

@simonzerafa @protonprivacy @mozillaofficial I mean something as simple like text-to-speech or OCR or machine translation models (like Google Translate/DeepL) can be considered "AI" technically. I'm a student and many courses involving creating our own models from scratch and many of my projects involving use models like tesseract-ocr, turtle-tts, YOLO, LLaMA,... for some tasks and this is painful for me as many outputs don't even make sense and I had to tweak a lot.
@BluesHarp But Vivaldi is not free/libre and open source software... This is even not an option on my operating system as it is really impossible to know what Vivaldi dev are doing with your data.

@rejzor Yes, changing web browser can be difficult. My first hours with LibreWolf was a real maze. I'm really lucky I could speak about my issue on the Pepper&Carrot matrix room and received assistance from a more experienced user.
I updated on their bug tracker the thread that I found with the information I needed, for future users in the same situation as me.
I've tried and used so many browser in my life, but at the moment I have a priority of not using anything Google and to not deal with issues and BS. Firefox fits that despite all the idiocies Mozilla is doing as I don't have the time and nerves anymore to deal with random issues forks have that Firefox doesn't. Like, literally the first news streaming site for news I use didn't work in Waterfox and does in Firefox. So, there's that.
I do not like what firefox mozilla is trying to do but. I like librewolf just... they can not enhance security by (in the past) delay the code for (weeks to) fixes. It is not good but sometimes takes days. We need to pull togeather and if librewolf fixed this i am fine to change..

@ibrahim_cris For sure, yes, this is something I want to see in the long run: how quick LibreWolf get patched and released to security vulnerabilities.
But so far, this was really educative: I now better understand many Firefox privacy options not activated by default and that I never knew of existence. If I go back to Firefox, I'll be a more advanced user knowing the settings and the about:config options.

And the more I think about my web browsing usage, the more I wonder why I want to keep all my browsing inside a single web browser.
Probably a habit I developed with the early web.
I might start to install more browsers and split up my web browsing habit depending on activities and the level of privacy and security I need for certain website.
@elgregor That's a good solution! My initiation to LibreWolf made me aware of many settings I never thought existing in Firefox (because suddenly all were turned on by default). It was really educative, and I'll probably benefit a lot of it if I'm going back to Firefox.

@technikhil I just gave #Librewolf and #Zenbrowser a try. Both seem to work perfectly fine, and reimporting my date from #Firefox was easy (which seems logical since they're both based on Firefox). I'm not switching now though. I took a minute to check my Firefox settings and opt out from everything that seemed not to be data privacy friendly.
I'm wondering if those forks are actually viable if Firefox dies one day... So for now I'd rather not cut the branch I've been sitting on for 2 decades, wait and see.

@louischance Yep, perfectly rational... I too have not (yet) given up on Firefox, I have just started compartmentalizing what I use it for. The Firefox sync allows me to still keep parity between the 2 browsers, though given the direction Mozilla is going I am probably going to delete that account quite soon. The similarity with Arc is what drew me to the Zen browser initially. I also like the amount of space it provides for the content in it's "compact mode" layout.

J'éspère que l’installation sera facile sous Ubuntu. Ici aucune idée de comment ça se passe sous les système 'buntu-based. Pour moi sous Debian 12 KDE avec la doc c'était vraiment trois lignes de commandes à copier/coller et c'était fait.
Pour comparaison: déloger le Firefox-ESR de Debian stable et le remplacer par la repo officielle de Firefox au moment de mon install avait été un processus plus complex.

yes, LibreWolf is a great fork of Firefox. I also use it (and I haven't used the “main” version of Firefox in a long time now), and it took a little configuring before being usable the way I wanted.
Its strong privacy defaults remind me somewhat of Firefox Focus on mobile devices.
@confusomu If LibreWolf is stripped of Mozilla services like Firefox Sync how do you sync stuff between your different devices? Extensions, bookmarks etc.
@confusomu @saphkey Yes, it took me time configuring it too. And I wiped more than three time the ~/.librewolf pref directory to start anew and be sure to reactive things I need only. It's very educative to all the many comfort I need that can compromise privacy/security of browsing website these days. Very, very educative.

He recently announced moving to GNU/Linux. It's not the best period to do this for artists, with Wayland, all container war etc...I don't remember I saw an update of them about how they succeed to make it. Certainly hard time ^ ^ I hope he found my blog post about it.
LibreWolf is just a layer of community reviewing in case Mozilla pushes something bad to their audience. My metaphor about the layer of ash on top of a fox works for this reason.
I also worry for the future of Firefox. I hope their executives will see larger community forming around forks, and it will make them find back their focus to privacy, and security. I'll be back to Firefox if they do that.
@darkbeth hopefully we have to worry about that only a few years until independent engines become usable. #Verso and #Ladybird are candidates if #mozilla codebase rots. GNOME Web / #epiphany is another browser that has an engine not depending on Google (Apple webkit engine though, but at it it will be a real competition and even though they are bad to their own usets, they are not as powerful on the web like Google).

Is it worth running LibreWolf without fingerprinting disabled? It's kind of a dealbreaker that it doesn't save zoom options on websites. At least I could handle having to run another browser to use Netflix...
@Yingwu That's exactly where I found it educative to have to be personally facing this dilemma and having to choose.
Here I decided to allow fingerprinting, because mainly I really like when a blog or website switch to dark mode automatically. Without that, all website were in light theme, and it felt very difficult to me to browse the web like that now...
Even though selecting the dark theme would give a whole 1 bit of fingerprinting, browsers that serve the users really allow optionally keeping dark themes even with fingerprinting resistance enabled.
Download Dark Background and Light Text for Firefox. Make every web page (or just the pages you want) display light text on dark backgrounds. All color variations are fully customizable.
@ferran4 @peterainbow Vivaldi is not free/libre and open source software and I would find that using a proprietary freeware as a web browser really dangerous nowadays for privacy and security. So, not sure any distribution will think it is a good idea (except a community edition of Manjaro who tried it but , well, it's Manjaro, not the distro most concerned about FLOSS, imo )

😆 I don't think LibreWolf has view for market share and plebs. As far as I know it's a community initiative, not a company. Yes, it require time to install and setup, and understand the implication of what security and privacy setting one decide to lower. But I'm happy I took this time, I feel I understand even more how the web of 2025 is broken and how web browser interacts with it to try to ease the experience.

@DBG3D @Gonzalo I use only three or four extension here, one to skip sponsoring segment on Youtube, another one to auto-complete cookie, a css div box outliner, an extension also to get more info on pictures and be able to search by image. They all look like they work fine.
In a post-truth era, what companies state worth unfortunately nothing to me, personally. Only legal documents like a license can protect us as a end user.
At least they state: "We don't want your data and we don't care how you use our browser."
Mike Kuketz (Data Security Specialist) did an analysis of most browsers and Vivaldi opens nearly no connections to their servers (except e.g. to check for updates).
Still, it's based on Chromium ... so I guess we can only trust them.

Note that if you are concerning about security, you may want to enable Google Safe Browsing as well (I know this is from Google, but implementation from Mozilla is making sense and even Librewolf devs are considering enabling it if it wasn't for user self-compiling issues). I'm a CS student myself but I don't think I'm that savvy for checking every site I go though.
@praveen @darkbeth I mean this is one of the benefits of open source and free/libre software, is that it help users to have alternative in case the original went bad and have a voice to push back harmful changes.
Right...so what are people using for a #browser ? I'm ready to dump Firefox, but having trouble find a good alternative. Founder of BRAVE sounds like he's a homophobic douchebag, Mullvad doesn't seem great on a phone, and Vivaldi has an issue with some of its links. All I'm hearing second hand, so take it with a grain of salt.
librewolf? I just exported my bookmarks and passwords in firefox, removed it, and installed librewolf. Just remember to go into settings and tell librewolf to not to delete cookies and site data when LibreWolf is closed.

The service I use is 'print on demand', so they use the same file for printing as when I submitted it years ago and checked, and I hope their process is still the same. They are literally printing the books one by one.

So we're at the next hurdle in keeping Friendica.World stable.
We now hit an issue where a cleanup job hangs the database. The database query it fires takes too long, and after a while this starts locking other processes in the database. Then the database connections fill up to the maximum, and the site becomes available.
I've raised an issue for this : github.com/friendica/friendica… and someone proposed a workaround they are using, we might try that as well until a fix has been created.

Wow, I shouldn't have to dig up old emails from 2004/2005 to prove I was a member of the project. I just lost all respect I had for the Apache Software Foundation as a whole. My personal recommendation (absolutely feel free to not care^^) would be to just delete/archive the mail and be done. It's full of manipulation tactics such as flattery and seduction ('masterpiece/wonderful/beautiful/magical') , a call to social norm (eg. "many conservative parents worlwide", "different cultures"), playing the victim (eg. "more accessible", also a 'mirroring' tactic using a vocabulary used by people caring about other humans).
Showing it publicly might prepare and help more vulnerable authors receiving this.

Definitely, you should not "fix" that "not so" minor adjustment. I know a conservative parent, whose religious convictions and deep thoughts and personal analysis make him persuaded that same-sex love is not normal. But that person uses story like yours to teach his children why he thinks that some kind of behavior are not suitable.

Tolerance and inclusivity must logically be intolerant of intolerance and exclude those who loath inclusivity.
I always try to view things from both sides. So, as a parent, you may think that "cis heterosexual" is the path of least resistance and it may prevent difficulties for your child in the future. I have some understanding for this view.
However, apart from what they may think is right for the child, it won't change the reality that same-sex relationships exist and should be accepted as normal. Less common perhaps, but normal.
Instead, they attempt to warp reality for their children.
People can express their opinion, but at times we do so without being thoughtful or considerate.
How long do they plan on their children living with them so as to "avoid exposing" them to reality?
Have they reflected on how they are "exposing" their children to their devaluation of some people over others and the long-term effect that will have in their interactions with others?
Also, them asking YOU to change to accommodate them, ugh - Rude, no matter the sweetness.

I for one, never had an issue with this, ever since I was young. I managed to stay away from deep religious beliefs despite having an Orthodox upbringing up until I was 12.

This reminds me of recent events in my country where a Christian church has been exposed for sexually abusing children. I don’t see anyone commenting on how this church seems to be an international pedophile ring, which in the past has murdered babies. Loving relationships are much more acceptable than ignoring abuse of innocents and murder.

Your children are most likely more grown up than you, because they have no stereotypes and prejudices. Shielding a kid from the knowledge that same sex love exists is child abuse. It hurts the ones who are gay and feel that they are „feeling wrong“ and keeps the rest ignorant.

Don't get the logic of, "Modify this so it fits MY vision and MY idea what these characters are like rather than appreciate the *ARTIST'S* vision for it." The audacity is truly baffling!
The more time I spend with the letter, the more I see nuances.
Firstly, to their credit, the author isn't admonishing you directly, and they are saying their perspective out loud, which I think is positive. They aren't saying "This is immoral", etc. only that for her and people like her, this isn't acceptable, but he names who those people are, which is good.
...which is what it is. The work isn't for her.
What I think is interesting is how invisible culture is to people.
What might she think of the bisou. People kissing each other's faces all the time would probably freak her out.
But what if she was a Haredi Orthodox Jew, and you had two non-married people of the opposite sex holding hands?
Or what if she was a conservative Muslim offended by Pepper not covering her head?
Like I said, at least she acknowledges her specific perspective.
And anyway, they're free to modify P&C as per the license. 😀

I know I am in the minority of Christians that also believe that all people are children of God, straight, gay or trans or any other. I'm glad you are not changing your art; it wasn't wrong so there's nothing to fix. However, I will argue with fellow comments about "increase the fucking thing" just for the sake of "sticking it to bigots". Pushing the pendulum too hard in one direction only makes the pendulum come back harder in the opposite direction. We should strive for harmony.

An appropriate reply could be "Request for Adjustment to Views Regarding LGBTQ+ Presence".
Their argument, that their suggestion would be accommodating of different cultures, is quite erasive of the presence of LGBTQ+ people everywhere.
It's an example of misappropriating the language of inclusion towards oppression; i.e. it's another form of "tolerating the intolerant", where they want their intolerance of historically marginalized communities to be the dominant and only visible view.

censorship is a whip to hit all non-mainstream people. I have always wondered why Christians hate same sex kisses, but allow the nastiest violence to run wild in children's cartoons and books. Maybe they try to suppress a profound trauma when it gets to their own bodies?
I remember when my 8 year old daughter first saw this panel she felt confused and embarrassed, and it was an excellent cue for us to explain to her that yes, sometimes girls love girls and there's nothing wrong with it. I think it was her first introduction to the idea of same-sex love, and seeing it in her favorite comic made it easier to understand. Thanks for that!

Never seen anyone non religious talk like that, it's religious bigots getting emboldened by the trump direction 100% most likely also american exceptionalists ignorant that others don't share their culture and weird puritan beliefs. They have gone after me often enough.
I've tried that, but I grew tired of it, so now if I feel that there is reason for it I try to do benefit of the doubt, but in cases like this where I don't really see it, here is someone demanding that someone else changes their art because "it makes their feefees hurt to have people, they think should not exist, express joy" Then I have no real wish to even spare a thought on what they "may have meant"
Sure, but if you'll recall the original point was that this person may not be religious. I never meant to suggest that they have a justification for their behavior. As I see it we're not on different sides here.
Who else would have problems with two people of the same gender kissing, and then bring out the "would someone please think of the children!" arguement? I don't know, it might be my weird gang of people that I'm around but personally I've never seen anyone else that actually would care so much about it that they would actually write the artist. And I grew up in a very blue collar family.
There are so many people in the world, I bet you there are some that would do this without being religious. That said, you're probably right. Sometimes I'm just contrarian for the sake of it.
The ask was respectfully made and deserves an respectful answer. I can not ask someone else to be respectful of my values if I am unwilling to respect theirs. Respect does not mean agreeing with an opinion, but it means to hear it out.

these are not "concerned" individuals there are operational radical groups out there to censor accessible media such as yours. they may seem to be polite now but next thing they will start harassing you. consider outing their names and email addresses. please don't cover for them. it helps to know and document their reach and network.

It's full of manipulation tactics such as flattery, charm and seduction ('masterpiece/wonderful/beautiful/magical') , a call to social norm (eg. "many conservative parents worlwide", "different cultures"), playing the victim (eg. "more accessible", also a 'mirroring' tactic using a vocabulary used by people caring about other humans).
Respectfulness in surface but not at core is not respectfulness.
this is an incredible email to write ! How can people feel so much fear/hate toward a representation that : - Is literally a display of love - Is not about them or impact them in any way - Is a work of *fiction* (- and of course respect consent)
Wanting to impose your life choices on others, about absolutly harmless choices, is something I just don't understand. I feel so sad for the children raised by parents with this kind of consideration in mind 😞

Not that you have to but I would be so tempted to write back along the lines of, yes, isn't it wonderful that there are many couples, same-sex, opposite-sex, etc, who love each other and it is such a joy to write about them all! With your encouragement I'll write even more about same-sex couples!!
@RadicalEdward I will never understand the parents who think that they’re doing a good thing by “not exposing kids to” things they’d prefer didn’t exist.
I’d be doing such a huge disservice towards my kids if I tried to keep them from hearing about things like fundamentalism, for example. Instead of keeping it from them, why would you not want to simply discuss your values when such things come up?
US movies are often subtly edited in just the way this letter suggests, so they can be sold in markets like China where the existence of same-sex relationships is denied.
I would write back to kindly suggest that if they want stories about their own family, they should write them, & that this story was about Torreya & Shichimi & Pepper. 🤷 And that they & "many conservative parents worldwide" should maybe just lock up their kids & never let them out to see the rest of the wide, wide world.

In particular he frames God as a "mega belief" that's propped up by many smaller ones, so even if one smaller belief falls the overall belief structure remains

What I find most offensive about this "request" is the idea that somehow it's a good thing for you to compromise your creative vision so that it's palatable for an audience you have no interest in catering to in the first place.
I'd be inclined to say something like "Thank you for your email, but I fear you are mistaken about the nature of your relationship to Pepper & Carrot. It is not intended for people who aren't comfortable sharing same-sex relationships with their children."
@f4grx @Lulukaros @napierge hm, idk, I used to be a Christian as a kid (raised in an Orthodox Christian family) and then throughout high school I just gradually believed less and less until by the end I kinda just didn't at all
It didn't require any active effort from me or anyone else, it just happened, believing just gradually made less and less sense to me as time went on
I'm no homophobe, at least I think I'm not. I have gay friends, hell a very good gay friend was the best man at my wedding. With older folks, genZ and below Media did not portray homosexuality often.

The issue is media exposure from a cultural perspective. Homo/bi/etc sexuality was never a common thing in media over the ages.
