I hope this means that NY Langone Health will either get sued for denying on 2.2.25 gender-affirming care to 2 12 year-olds or will reverse their loathsome decision.

Authorities in at least three states have arrested individuals allegedly impersonating Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers at a time when real ICE agents have ramped up immigration enforcement efforts under the Trump administration, adding to existing fears of law enforcement among migrant communities.
In South Carolina, Sean-Michael Johnson, 33, was charged with kidnapping and impersonating a police officer after allegedly detaining a group of Latino men along a Charleston County road. Johnson is accused of “willfully and unlawfully presenting himself as an ICE Agent and detaining a vehicle of individuals from moving,” according to court records.
The incident, which was recorded by one of the victims, took place on Sullivan’s Island near Charleston on January 29.
“You all got caught!” Johnson is heard saying on the video. “Where are you from, Mexico? You from Mexico? You’re going back to Mexico!”
In the video, Johnson is seen taking the driver’s keys, mocking the driver’s accent, while jiggling the car keys in his face. At one point he is seen trying to take the driver’s phone.

The Chinese are far smarter than Trump. The Chinese aren't doing blanket tariffs, but targeted tariffs. They're targeting the areas of the USA that support Trump.
For example, my forlorn lackluster state of West Virginia is known for coal exports and extreme Trump support. We export coal to China, which Trump probably doesn't even know. So, the Chinese just popped a tariff on US coal imports.
Bahahahaha.

How do I find a community for a particular interest like ballet or gardening?
You can look at several places in the Fediverse. Let's start at home. At Friendica.
At the top you have the contacts button. With the people icon. One can look in 'the local directory' with the relevant keyword.
But it makes sense to go directly to the global directory. You look a group about a specific topic. On what instance of Friendica it is hosted is not important.
Click on the entry 'Global directory' in the contacts section. It opens in a new window at an external website.
There you can search. You will notice the number of lists is relative modest at present. These are user and groups from many different Friendica installations.
At present nothing can be found about 'ballet'. We do have one match for 'gardening'.

There is a button present to 'follow'. - That button does not work. Just click on the group listing itself.
There you find a button to 'follow' that works. Note the address in the address bar. You are now on an other instance of Friendica.
You get a screen to enter your Friendica handle. Enter it like it is listed on your profile page. And then you get the option to actually submit the request to join that group.
If the group you wish to join is not public you will have to wait to get approved.
The groups you have joined show up in the left side menu when you click on the 'network' button, what is the most left top button, the square.
Even if you have found a on-topic group that does not mean you will be happy with it. The 'gardening group' we found 'gardensplantshorti@squeet.me' has only a six posts and are 6 year old. - But you do have now a place to try to revive it.
If you can not find what you are looking for (and not directly interested in just creating a group yourself) looking at Lemmy makes most sense. Lemmy is presented as the Fediverse version of Reddit.
Friendica.world has a Lemmy sister at lemmy.world
There is the option to do a search in the community, including 'All'. Also nothing about 'ballet'. There are a fair bit of options related to 'gardening'.
While not a place with 'active buzz' the group gardening@lemmy.world is clearly the most mature.
Again, also that button there to subscribe does not work. You do the name of the group. And when you have the name you can go here at this Friendica instance and go to 'contacts' section. And enter that name of the Lemmy group via the 'add new contact' option.
That way you can just add a Lemmy group to Friendica.
Mastadon is the more mature pillar of the Fediverse . Most users.
I am not sure how it works there with groups. I think there is some group function also at Mastodon. In any case there is fair chance you will find users posting about the topic you are interested in.
And if you find those then you can also add those here. 'Contact' & 'Add new contact'.

He slapped tariffs of 25% on goods coming from Mexico and Canada, tariffs of 10% on Canadian energy, and tariffs of 10% on goods coming from China. He said he was doing so to force Mexico and Canada to do more about undocumented migration and drug trafficking, but while precursor chemicals to make fentanyl come from China and undocumented migrants come over the southern border with Mexico, Canada accounts for only about 1% of both. Further, Trump has diverted Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents combating drug trafficking to his immigration sweeps.
As soon as he took office, Trump designated Mexican drug cartels as foreign terrorist organizations, and on Friday, Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth responded that “all options will be on the table” when a Fox News Channel host asked if the military will strike within Mexico. Today Trump was clearer: he posted on social media that without U.S. trade—which Trump somehow thinks is a “massive subsidy”—“Canada ceases to exist as a viable Country. Harsh but true! Therefore, Canada should become our Cherished 51st State. Much lower taxes, and far better military protection for the people of Canada—AND NO TARIFFS!”

Today Ellen Knickmeyer of the Associated Press reported that yesterday two top security officials from the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) tried to stop people associated with Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency, or DOGE, from accessing classified information they did not have security clearance to see. The Trump administration put the officials on leave, and the DOGE team gained access to the information.
Vittoria Elliott of Wired has identified those associated with Musk’s takeover as six “engineers who are barely out of—and in at least one case, purportedly still in—college.” They are connected either to Musk or to his long-time associate Peter Thiel, who backed J.D. Vance’s Senate run eighteen months before he became Trump’s vice presidential running mate. Their names are Akash Bobba, Edward Coristine, Luke Farritor, Gautier Cole Killian, Gavin Kliger, and Ethan Shaotran, and they have little to no experience in government.
Public policy expert Dan Moynihan told reporter Elliott that the fact these people “are not really public officials” makes it hard for Congress to intervene. “So this feels like a hostile takeover of the machinery of governments by the richest man in the world,” he said. Law professor Nick Bednar noted that “it is very unlikely” that the engineers “have the expertise to understand either the law or the administration needs that surround these agencies.”

@jodmentum the New Hampshire GOP are trying to pass a state law that says the public has the right to inspect the list of people who request absentee ballots.
We can only vote absentee here if we are disabled or if we be traveling on voting day. It’s a great way to figure out who’s disabled or who won’t be home on voting day. People who vote absentee but who aren’t disabled will be letting the public know they won’t be home on voting day. It’s gross.
But after reading this thread I’m sure that list will be used for a lot more nefarious things than just potential robberies and disability discrimination.

@pkprotoplasm I just now (12:08 pm Eastern) followed the steps to apply for a new passport (not renewal) and this is the message I got when trying to open the application, “Passport Application System is undergoing maintenance”.

I was *just about* to renew my uncomplicated, no-changes passport online — but opted to apply for the RealID license first (which requires a valid passport)

It is not disproportional. The Executive Order is trying to stand in for actual law and is trying to grant powers the Constitution does not allow it to.

I just don't think the US is at that point yet where fundamental institutions of democracy are at the edge of collapse, like they were in Germany at that sad point in time.
Besides, US has been a democracy for 100+ years, I doubt it will suddenly fall after a few weeks of a lunatic's mandate.

1) sadly, the last month's events are the culmination of decades of work by ill intended folks at pleases like the Heritage Foundation.
2) it took Germany about 53 days to stop being a democracy. The fact the US has been a democracy for almost 250 years may help, but so far it is unclear exactly how, or if it will in fact.
3) "fundamental institutions of democracy are at the edge of collapse..." now more than they ever have been at any time in history.

Stop buying from Amazon.
