'“This is the stuff of nightmares,” virologist Dr. Angela Rasmussen told me earlier this week, as she discussed the rising chance of bird flu mutating this flu season.
Hospitals are treating regular flu and bird flu patients in the same wards, increasing the potential for bird flu to pick up genes from other flu strains in a way that would facilitate human-to-human transmission.
With DOGE-mandated cuts destroying vital public health systems, “we’ve disabled our monitoring. We’ve disabled our response capabilities,” she explained. In other words, if bird flu starts circulating in the community, the public health surveillance systems that DOGE has gutted likely won’t catch it until it spreads exponentially and hospitals are overrun. “It’ll be like one day everything’s fine and the next day it’s a bird flu pandemic.”
Musk-Trump’s first month in office has represented such an all-out assault on the functionality of government that it’s hard to comprehend the totality of what is happening. But one way to view it is that each Trump appointee heading a different aspect of the federal system has their own destructive potential. When acting in concert, the result will be catastrophic.'

Sometimes "quickly" is too late.
Even five minute delay can easily collapse the stock market, for example.
Indeed. One of the Fediverse's strengths is that, like ec.social-network.europa.eu/ any country or coalition could set up an official and hardened server that assures the public of a trusted source of information dissemination.
The time for this is now.

If Musk does that, it would only accelerate the currently rapid decline in usage and value of a server he paid $44 billion to gain control over.
@elCelio Musk seems to be following a 'chaos capitalism' model similar to Trump's where the gains of a previous venture give leverage in the higher stakes next one, all the while previous stepping stones are destroyed and abandoned along with their debts.

What stops Musk from cancelling Ukraine's ability to use Starlink?
Nothing. I expect that will be announced tomorrow at the latest.
@adventure_tense It's pretty clear now that X and Facebook have migrated into being tools of right wing propaganda. To be using them (as well as Threads), is to be willing to expose oneself to that toxicity and feel it won't harm one's self.

well, you still didn't say what services you meant but I see after checking that I asked about are what you meant. Here's actually an article on Fastly's site talking about how they provide free hosting: fastly.com/customers/mastodon
I will say this doesn't make what @Gargron pointed out moot since it is still the case that Mastodon is more than just the servers run by Mastodon GmbH and the European Comission probably does not host their instance in the USA. Ofc you didn't claim that.

Why to stop Musk or anyone in speaking?
Because nobody is skilled to answer him? Realy?
Free speech is the diverence between a freedom or tyrany. Are whe for a tyrany or for freedom?
Humanity know for ages, even since the beginning, misleading speaches. Whe have Sects, Kings, KGB, Mosad, CIA, USAID, NSA and a million other organisations with the most important purpose of misinformation. Freedom survived with al of them. But when speech is forbidden everyone dieds.
Technologically this is pretty easy to accomplish. For example, many (if not most) of the Fediverse-compatible server platforms allow for anonymous browsing of posts. So even now there is no real restriction for people that merely wish to read communications. Replicating those feeds onto a more “classic” website server instance is not that complicated from a coding or server admin standpoint.
So the capability to do that is already there.
that's going to be the point where world politics will hopefully no longer be played out on social media....
On the other hand: there is an expression in German "don't wake sleeping dogs", meaning: don't give them ideas they have maybe not yet had. @EUCommission

@Lazarou Yeah, I had a Proton account for several years and was *this close* to doing a big migration of 10+ years of Gmail to them, when the following happened in about a 6 month period:
- cryptocurrency integration. Ok, meh, don't like that sort of thing, but there's probably non-trivial overlap between "better privacy/security" people and cryptocurrency people so ... I can live with it. For now. Continue working out Gmail migration.
- "AI" doohickeys. Optional, and fairly restrained, but a classic entry point for enshittification. Put planned Gmail migration on hold.
- CEO kissing up to Trump, or at least thinking he can actually trust anything Trump says or does to mean anything: Start actively looking elsewhere for private email.
- CEO putting a disguised "88" in user name: oh hell no, this really is not someone I can trust. I don't care if they might have been born in 1988, they sure AF weren't born in 191011000, and they *really, really* wanted something that looks like a disguised "HH" in their user name...
Really? Oh boy. As a Proton visionary customer I am really getting annoyed by the recent 'news' created by Proton.

@v_raton @cadusilva I would suggest staying away from companies that provide "encrypted email". There's only one company that offers full encryption of everything (unlike Proton) which is Tuta. But you're locked into using their clients as they don't use PGP. You can decide whether you care about that.
I personally use Migadu. They're much smaller and require you to own a domain, but their support is excellent and their cheapest plan is very affordable.
Then again, almost any email provider is a step up from Proton.

What's important for you? Only encryption? A full suite of tools like Drive, Calendar, Pass etc? Support any business to compete with US-BigTech?
If everything you need is a simple e-mail, look for Tuta or Posteo.net. Tuta is the direct competitor of Proton.
I use Posteo and Proton. I keep a Gmail address for spam. I have nothing against Tuta, it's just that the other arrived first. 😀
I don't know any pro-privacy company that offers, today, a full suite with password manager and VPN as Proton does, only the classic suite (email/calendar/drive/office/etc).

Kort internationaal AI nieuws.
1

Of course the point of Solnit is that resistance is not spontaneously "popping up like mushrooms", but the fruit of the mycelium of years of organising.
Which doesn't mean that you need years before doing anything, but it does mean you need to start organising NOW if you didn't already.
Find people, at least one. Or even better: join an existing organisation.
Then do something.
Just a little thing. Call a representative, and ask them to put up a fight. Or print a poster of a burning swasticar and hang it in the street. Or collect clothing and food for the people who need it most. Or ask an activist or an organisation you like, what they need most.
You don't have to invent the wheel. You can be a little brick. We don't need heroes, we need to organise. And we need many people who take a little step, and another one, and another one, until the mushrooms bloom.

Democracies historically tend to fail.
We had such a good run that we forgot there’s nothing holding it together but us.
@gimulnautti in a long enough timeline all ruling systems break down. this is not useful information.
@thegarbagebird It’s not information, but a call to think about why.
After the fall of the Soviet Union, the west made all kinds of false statements about the inevitibilaty of #democracy.
All of it was wrong. And as we stopped working on keeping our democracy, it quickly degraded and is now slipping away.
I hope you catch my argument this time, have a nice day.
@gimulnautti oh i got it the first time, i just thought it was silly.
i know this isn't your intent, but you have phrased it like you only just found out that representative democracy hasn’t been real since the before the cigarette lobby. the horse has bolted. i don't think it is useful to talk about how important it is to keep the gate closed

Meanwhile the only country on earth qualified as a "tankie" nation is the US, who have been using armored vehicles and tanks against peaceful protestors since tanks and armored vehicles have existed. 😆
If a nation/state is going to have my data, Im going to wager that nations that have NOT terrorized the world for 100+ years for PROFIT are better off with it.
Re: "If you’re in the UK, cancel your iCloud subscription."
Surely even if you're not in the UK you should cancel your iCloud subscription. The government ordered a backdoor to iCloud accounts worldwide. The B.B.C. article even says "It is not clear that Apple's actions will fully address those concerns, as the IPA order applies worldwide and ADP will continue to operate in other countries"
@vascorsd The government *already* had access to your iCloud data, in or out of the UK, unless you had ADP enabled.
Pulling it from the UK didn’t change that, except on the edges for those who had it enabled (or would have done so).
ADP is a massive privacy improvement, but most customers aren't using it and were (and remain) vulnerable to spying.
This is an effective return to the status quo from before ADP was introduced in Dec. 2019.
And naturally, Apple won't leave this market.…
I suspect Trump will be taking notice of this. Will the US be far behind?
Me too…on both counts!

I’m quite confused when I hear my fellow European citizens worry about our dependence on American Big Tech, and that in case America goes full Nazi we have no way of building our future.
American Big Tech is overwhelmingly dependent on free and open-source software that is overwhelmingly built and maintained by volunteers on both sides of the pond.
From the Linux kernel that powers basically all the large servers in the world, to the most popular distros built around that kernel, to the most popular database systems (MariaDB, Postgres, MongoDB…) and messaging systems (Redis, Kafka…), to Elastic (based in Amsterdam), to Blender (also based in Amsterdam), to all the open programming languages that power today’s world (Rust, PHP, Python [also invented by a Dutch developer], Kotlin [developed by JetBrains, also headquartered in Amsterdam]), to the Web servers that serve most of the content (nginx, Apache…), to the Grafana+Loki+Prometheus+OTEL stack that makes the backbone of observability in most of today’s large companies, to the numpy+pandas libraries that are the backbone of all of today’s AI hype, large American companies could do NOTHING, and I mean literally NOTHING, without open-source software that is built out of collaborations between European and American developers (who are often unpaid, uncredited and on the verge of burnout).
If you want a glimpse of today’s technological avantgarde, you don’t have to go to flashy and hollow events like ESC in Las Vegas, or any Silicon Valley sponsored event. You have to go to FOSDEM in Belgium.
American Big Tech has the ability of putting together these freely available building blocks, building finished products with them, monetizing them aggressively through unethical business models based on addiction, stalking, profiling and digging monopolistic moats, funding them through some of the richest men in the world (because the VC world is still dominated only by rich white men), locking them up as services that run into their private clouds (companies like AWS literally fill up bottles with free tap water and make outrageous amounts of money by renting access to that water), and sucking up generous subsidies from the federal government, while the EU gives literally peanuts to those building this infrastructure - we had to wait for years and beg the commission before getting something like Next Generation Internet up and running, which provides these projects with literally 0.01% of the money that the US has provided to its already deep-pocketed giants through things like the CHIPS act, and we also have to periodically send them letters like this pad.public.cat/lettre-NCP-NGI# to make sure that we don’t lose even those peanuts.
Imagine what we could build in Europe if only we had coherent technological programs that just funded the talent that we already have.
Imagine what we could do if instead of a couple of millions of spare change (and Von der Leyen never putting her wallet where her mouth is, because if we had one million every time she said “EU 🩷 open-source” all the EU-based volunteers on Github will be millionaire by now) we had even a fraction of the funding of acts like CHIPS.
Imagine what we could do if European companies firmly grounded in the values of open-source and ethical business models (like Nextcloud or Blender) had enough funding to compete with the American giants, instead of having to hear technologically illiterate megalomaniacs like Draghi and Macron argue for “European champions” that simply mock the unsustainable and unethical business models championed by America.
Our cousins on the other side of the Atlantic lately are going a bit nuts (like Nazi nuts). It’s time to start decoupling and de-riskifying from them, nurturing our own sustainable open-source ecosystem, and, if they start leveraging their own Big Tech as a weapon against us, pull the drawbridge and cut them out of the European open-source software that runs their servers. We can survive without their products; they can’t survive without our free code.
In a world where code and data are the new oil, access to open-source software means access to the raw materials required to make your industry wealthy. We shouldn’t underestimate that.

Actually, all it takes for the US-based tech stack to collapse is for @bagder to change the #curl license so it can’t be used by American companies - unless they explicitly condemn Donald Musk and they pledge to be more accountable for all the user data that they scoop up.
Good luck rewriting their HTTP layers on all of their devices and services otherwise.
It's not that simple.
If we primarily define big tech as companies that most Europeans use and depend on, such as Amazon, Google, Meta, Microsoft, Apple, etc, then we can roughly divide each of those companies into two layers:
Hardware layer - stuff that makes Google's, Amazon's, etc servers tick. This stuff is not open source at all, and most of it is US owned.
Software layer: most of it is open source but there is also plenty of 'secret sauce' that hyperscalers use and never open.

"EU-based volunteers on GitHub" need to get off of Microsoft's GitHub, and onto something more free software and EU-based like Codeberg. It's really easy to move, and Microsoft will then lose access to harvesting their data.
You can't close off access to free software. It belongs to everyone. It's part of the cost of being a free software advocate.
Yeah really, most places I've worked the codebase has been nothing but a thin brittle layer over a giant heap of open source dependencies and a few paid services like AWS and Datadog.
That said American big tech still does control some critical OSS like React.

similar to how much of the bs from MAGA land is deeply hypocritical bullshit, it's a witty and ironic thing to do to call a racist erasing black history "critical race theory"

That's something even The Onion would hesitate to write about.
That is so fucking sickening that I don't even know what to say.
Worst thing to say about genocides is that “there are plenty of examples from the 20th century”. Yes, there are.
We call it the hall of shame.
I can't stand clickbait headlines from any publisher. I would really need to see the article before getting outraged. A lot of times lately a headline like this is trying to get stupid people to read a story re "Why not do this thing that Trump says is reasonable?"
Since you don't link the article, your toot is also clickbait. Please, do better. Linking the source is basic internet etiquette (unless you're trying to sell something, then withholding the source is the way).
There were no problems with India Pakistan partition were there?
The Muslims remaining in India are perfectly well accepted with zero discrimination. India and Pakistan are peaceful neighbors with zero tension.
If we did partition, what is the worst thing that could happen? Two nuclear states, in perpetual tension, waiting for the chance to nuke each other into oblivion.
Hard to see a down side to that.
Well you know, Hitler did it.
I'm imagining the WSJ add for an editorial writer:

Elk ander type identiteit is inherent verdacht.

It's fascism, plain and simple.Matt Novak (Gizmodo)

Thinking of Aaron Swartz today & I’m stuck on this photo - he & OpenAI CEO Sam Altman (both circled) each scraped 1000s of docs but one did it to make the knowledge free for all while the other did it to make $$$$ through probabilistic plagiarism. The US DOJ only came after one of them & the other is feted by tech bros and executives.
Thank you Aaron for so much, for RSS, for Markdown, for Creative Commons and more. I’m sorry our society failed you.

I'm all for making sure creators are rewarded for their work. When third parties are allowed to buy and "own" that output, that creates seriously perverse incentives, like destroying someone who is seen as threatening your financial stake while conducting legal activity. Even if Swartz's actions were questionable, the reaction was out of all proportion. He was crucified to scare away anyone else considering exercising their legal rights.
Did I get that right?
Please know that I'm saying this with the understanding that you may just not know what to say, and that I hope it doesn't come off as rude, even though it probably will.
Meme images like this don't make it look like you actually feel anything or that you care, it makes you look flippant and irreverent. That's not the tone I think you're trying to convey. If it is though, that kinda sucks.
@delric In situations like this, memes are like greeting cards. They're a stand-in for when you can't, or can't be bothered to, think of something to say.
I'm not trying to virtue signal, I just see things like this and it feels so impersonal and not respectful at all.
Oof that hits hard..
Aaron is such in incredible loss for all of humanity
Barrett Brown, in his recent book, referred to the culpability of the government in his suicide:
"This entirely unnecessary tragedy brought national attention to the DOJ's habit of pressuring defendants into pleading guilty to lesser crimes by threatening them with inappropriately lengthy sentences if they took the case to trial."
Brown has also, in several interviews, made sure that he is not forgotten.
@shinmera Swartz didn't create Markdown, no, but John Gruber credits him with a pretty instrumental role in its development:
@shinmera According to Wikipedia:
In collaboration with John Gruber, Swartz co-created Markdown – a lightweight markup language for generating HTML – and was the author of its html2text translator. The syntax for Markdown was influenced by Swartz's earlier atx language (2002), which today is primarily remembered for its syntax for specifying headers, known as atx-style headers
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aaron_Sw…
So it seems he was a co-creator.
@DeltaLima Yes John is the creator but scroll down to the "Acknowledgements" section:
> Aaron Swartz deserves a tremendous amount of credit for his feedback on the design of Markdown’s formatting syntax. Markdown is *much* better thanks to Aaron’s ideas, feedback, and testing. Also, Aaron’s html2text is a very handy (and free) utility for turning HTML into Markdown-formatted plain text.

Ugh… that’s freaking HORRIBLE!
Makes you wonder about the utility of IP a little... if corporations disregard others' IP (ie. Everything on the Internet) then perhaps we do away with IP altogether. Or greatly reduce copyright protections in favor of copyleft perhaps.

aaronsw was an acquaintance in real, and we had exchanged emails and were FB friends.
He was principled, charming, talented, and much loved.
But he was also entitled and arrogant.
MIT blocked his access to JSTOR passively a number of times and he kept working around ip blocks, etc.
MIT had very good surveillance abilities, when we had a compromised guest laptop at One Laptop per Child IS&T called me in like 5 minutes and told me you have five minutes to get this off the net.
