I've been playing around with what I can achieve with #Blender. I'm truly amazed at what my 10yo laptop can handle.
This is made from a ready-made assets, including the mother and child, the grass, and the textures. The landscapes, and trees I made myself. I think the trees still need work, but it's a better start than I hoped.

Re: Nicole ~ This alleged Polish student in Toronto attending George Brown U. for pre -med sent me an unsolicited private message. I didn't engage, but curiously got some scam phone call from London, England today. Did not answer or engage with that either. Then, I got a scam email with a bill attached, also, did not open or engage. I must be on some geezer hot list in Scamatopia. Feel like I'm fending off cyber predators with a feather duster. ๐
For a real-world example of a crypto-centric pig butchering scam which made its way into the national news recently, the "Heartland Tri-State Bank", which went under in 2023, shows a lot of the steps. The mark even went so far as to steal from family and friends -- and an entire community -- in order to try and recoup his losses before they all came down on him.
Heartland Tri-State Bank in Kansas failed after CEO Shan Hanes caused $47 million in wire transfers to be sent to scammers running a pig butchering scheme.

I like the show 'Catfish' (MTV), and while most stories are about younger people, some stories are heartbreaking; people who really believe the person is real, and who keep sending money.
I like that the show, which really evolved, is so well done, with respect, and fun. I really enjoy watching Kamie and Nev helping out.
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. I was in the middle of one of these scams and partially blinded. Heck of a wake-up call, and rather disappointing that I didn't spot it sooner.
Fortunately, I hadn't got to the stage of handing any money over, and I blocked the person as soon as I read this.
So thank you for saving me from scammers. Lesson learnt: if they look too pretty, it's probably a scam.

If your profile picture isn't an anthromoporphic animal, and you're following me without interacting with any of my posts, AND your profile/posts don't feature *something* that matches the things I talk about, well, I have to wonder why you're even here.
This of course works for everyone (well, except fpr the anthromoporphic animal part, heh)

@amberage Re: Scam calls/texts Mine weren't too bad until recently. For a few years I had some guy asking for Mohammad and promoting a local mosque. ( Long lapsed RC here currently an agnostic) We spoke courteously and I got off that spreadsheet call list. But recently it's a several times a week thing for fake deliveries, toll roads, bills for no services rendered. I smack them down and report all of them. It's exhausting and I'm pretty sure it's age and gender related. You have my empathy. ๐ค
for a while, I reported every one to the Bundesnetzagentur (German FTC equivalent, I guess?), in the naive hopes they could, idk, get phone companies to block the numbers or smth. But they wrote back they can only act against German phone numbers, and my phone provider doesn't seem to offer any means of reporting malicious numbers.
I kind of expected there would be shared blocklists, like there are in email.

my folks have ~15-20 chickens at any given time. (they don't butcher, but there are coyotes, foxes, raccoons, hawks, eagles, etc. around, and the weather is harsh, so there's an attrition rate). they got the chicken coop for the price of hauling it away and mostly added on to it with salvaged lumber, spent some on fencing... just spitballing, i'm guessing they might have gotten it down to a dollar an egg after ~10 years or so.
yeah, i mean, like i said - just spitballing on the specific costs - but it's firmly in the range of "worth it, but you couldn't justify it on paper in pure dollar terms".

I sell mine for $6/doz (CAD), and when I'm pretty regular about it (which is...definitely not always, depends on time constraints), that pretty much exactly covers feed.
But, that is not counting the benefits I get from chicks for future chickens, occasionally getting to eat a few mean roosters (so, meat), fertilizer, + all the eggs my family eats.
So, in my particular situation, with my setup (self-sustaining, minimal work, free-ranging flock), I think that's a fair price.
I should add that I had farm buildings already on this property when I bought it, and I'm very aware that my lovely setup could come crashing down at any moment due to a predator or bird flu. So, I'm grateful for what I have right now.
This hen (I don't know her name!) came to Poplar Spring Animal Sanctuary fairly recently. She's missing a lot of feathers (typical when chickens are rescued from situations where they were living in cages), which will grow now that she has plenty of โฆ

Chicken retirement homes are a real thing. The US egg industry just kills the chickens when they are no longer productive (probably goes into canned chicken soup?). I don't think most chicken owners have the heart to kill the chickens who have been laying eggs for them, but instead they just hang out with the flock.
Happy Hen Animal Sanctuary is one of the largest farm animal sanctuaries in California. We have a full time-time veterinarian and onsite clinic which allows us to take in animals in the greatest need of care and rehabilitation.
Still better than the price of meat after relatively recently taking up hunting as an adult, which currently stands at several thousand dollars per pound ๐

And nobody will complain about the most expensive part - the hunting licence - during the coming depression so there that. @TonyYarusso mine is two quail and a rabbit. One flushed so close to me it "blowed up" and the other, left it on a cliff and could not get to it. But rabbits are good protein. Well, rabbit was protein. I'm not a good hunter. But I can get a blacktail or a cottontail anytime I am hungry enough*, so there is that.
* Not because I am a good hunter but because there are 100 blacktail hares and 200 cottontails in my yard ...
I had chickens for many years, and have many family members with chickens. My summary would be that in general, backyard chickens are cheap pets but pricy(ish) eggs. However, this is a tough question, as there is a price range on grocery eggs, and also different ways to own chickens, with wildly different costs (and egg production). The biggest single cost for owning chickens is the coop (and run). If you can build that yourself, it helps a lot.
and of course, the breed of chicken matters too - some lay occasional eggs, others reliably produce 1 egg/day most months (when daylight hours dip, to get eggs you need to supplement light). Do you want cute chickens? Friendly chickens? Egg laying champs? Chickens that forage?
tangential - this video and channel are the best source i've seen that actually breaks down costs, both including bought feed and grown feed, comparing breeds from ancestral to current ones, diet variety, and on and on.

@dank as much as I hate YouTube, I gotta see where this person gets their numbers. I raised laying hens and sold their eggs thru the local co-op, and $37.61 for "lifeโ looks like a decimal mistake.
I got my first house/coop 11 years ago for Xmas (expensive). Purchased my second house/coop with a stimulus check during the early part of the pandemic. I don't put a lot of effort into my miniature velociraptors, they really don't care about anything except free-ranging. Not including the houses/coops, my eggs run about $4/dozen, depending on how well they are laying. Have to have a rooster though for free replacements every other year, and be willing to cull unwanted roosters.
it's been a decade since I had a flock but in 2015 prices it would be about $2-3/dozen in Oregon with a flock of 30-50 birds. So with inflation, I would hazard a guess at $4-6/dozen.
The main thing that I see drive up the costs of people I know with small flocks is they don't know what they're doing and they make mistakes that cost money.
Like our neighbors can't figure out how to keep their birds safe from the neighborhood bobcat ๐
There are intangible benefits beyond the eggs, of course...the gentle background noise a small flock makes is one of the most peaceful and therapeutic sounds I know of.
When my neighbors moved to Texas last year their flock went with them, and I seriously miss them.

You need around 1/4 pound of chicken feed per chicken, per day and the cheap runs around $8-$10 for 50 pounds in the US, before they start raising the prices because there is a run on the backyard chicken market. You're looking at around 5 cents a day in chicken feed.
There is more, but the feed is a good starter
I think the solution will be local egg co-ops, where feasible.
At peak, I had 16 hens & had a combo of sex-link brown extralarge & fancy colors hen flock only. Fed organic & they ate scraps. Sold at $5 a dozen or $8 for 2 dozen. Gave a $1 discount for reusing the cartons. That covered their feed, wormer & bedding. I couldn't sell them fast enough to keep up.
I have 7 now. We have enough eggs to glass for the winter & all we can use. They're older and balanced by summer layers & winter layers. None are daily layers by design.
Sorry, got distracted. Two coops, $300 each for materials. We hired a homeless guy to build them, let him camp with us & fed him. Add another $400. The yard is already stockade fenced. My husband built the runs, 8' high wire interior fences, and netting (Hawk issues). We added solar powered doors (raccoon issues). Add another $1000. I have a brooding set-up & raised all my friends' birds for veggies. Another $100? My birds lay for 5-7 yrs & I raise peeps every 3-4 years.

I speak for the runner ducks. We have a flock of a dozen runner ducks. They are members of the gardening team. They are priceless contributors. They do pest control from caterpillars that eat the garden greens to mice in the coop. They are responsible for converting bedding to fertilized bedding. They also lay eggs. The duck chores keep us healthy. Laughing with the ducks is wonderful. The flock is all female. #compost, #ducksofmastoson, #minnesota, #growyourown.
@Pollinators How long do runner ducks lay/live? That's the one problem with chickens, they do great at rototiller duties off- season but not so much with veggie pests!

The error is in treating the chickens in isolation. Consider them as a component in a system and the payoffs come from many angles: waste reduction (they eat food scraps and weeds), pest control, soil improvement, and intangibles like entertainment and companionship.
Reducing everything to a narrow set of inputs and outputs is the same sort of mistake that commercial agriculture has made in promoting swathes of monoculture dependent on fossil inputs.
it depends a lot on the coop you get, the feed, if you buy chicks or pullets, etc. I might guess like, $8-10 with a nice coop starting from pullets to 3 years out. Maybe more... But you also get amazing fertilizer, eggs to give away to friends, and cool chickens to hang out with, so yeah, maybe you would almost break even before. Probably better than break even now and over the next few years.
Edit: coops can range from a under $100 in scavenged materials to $20k+ for crazy luxury coops. I think "very nice" is towards the low end of that, and "completely absurd" is maybe half way up. We had a nice one, but that also meant that it was built for us and assembled on site by the builder. We never had racoons or rats.
We went a little overboard with ours but our coop didn't ever stink. We dug out about 2 feet down under the coop, built a base from cinder blocks, and filled it with sand. The base of the coop was raised up, so the litter was always dry. We used wood shavings for litter (iirc, pine... Which wood is important because chickens have delicate respirator systems). When it was time to clean, we'd scoop shavings out to the yard and let them decompose. After a year or so we could dig down and get the best compost ever.
We also made PVC feeder and waterer so daily we'd open and close the coop, and weekly we'd clean and refill food.
So yeah, also important to consider the work involved but I feel like that was nice and it helped order our lives. Also the kids loved the chickens.
When I was younger, my mother had a few dozen of backyard hens and a handful of roosters. Feed is pretty cheap, and leghorn layers (the cheapest and most productive breed) are also pretty cheap as chicks ( which they send to the post office rather hilariously)
A coop, heaters, water and food dispensers, and, most of all, your own labor, otoh aren't cheap.
It isn't a good investment, but can be a hobby that helps pay for it's self. You're MUCH better off growing expensive "fruits" like peppers and tomatoes if you want to reduce your grocery bill. IME
This is an awesome thread. Sadly I think we are very close to our government saying poor people should eat grubs. Maybe farmers can let them pick insects off crops.
The big picture cost depends totally upon how crazy you go with chicken housing and accessories, and how much ground they have access to.
Our flock has the luxury of roaming our acre in the summer, so food costs go to basically zero since they eat all the bugs, seeds, and plants they can find. Electricity for heating their coop/water in the winter is a factor to consider depending on your climate. Food pellets are a negligible cost.
hot take: the cost depends about 90% on where you live.
If you live in a place where chickens are comfortable in the climate year round, you already have running water through a nearby paddock, you have a place to put the waste and you have plenty of excess scrap fruit/veg being produced on site, then chickens are probably free. In fact they are unpaid workers. Maybe they pay you.
If you live in an apartment, all those ecological services (temperature control, water provision, waste disposal) are provided by you/the grid and a chicken becomes extremely expensive.
In suberbia, small towns and rural fringes it's much harder to decide if it's economical, because you have a mix of ecological services and human provisioning.
I couldn't even begin to make an accurate guess, but it's definitely not cheaper. A buck an egg or maybe even more.
If people think it's about cheap eggs, they're way off - it's about self-sufficiency and getting healthy eggs from healthy birds that aren't abused in a factory farm.
We always joke that it's only a money saving proposition if they start laying jewel-encrusted eggs๐
@N3VEM Exactly this. I have never calculated the cost of the birds, set up, the building, fencing, straw, maintenance etc. I only want to make back the cost of feed as I go along. It was a few years ago that I raised my price to $7 because I was feeding organic feeds. It's not that I think organic is better for the birds or the eggs, but more that I wanted to support organic agricultural methods. Now since the price of organic feed is twice that of conventional, (and conventional is the price that organic was only 5 years ago) I feed conventional and charge the $7 per dozen. My wee hens are happy and, so far, healthy. (seriously fuck bird flu) I could sell any number of eggs I could produce but I'm keeping my flock small and only sell 3 dozen a week on top of what we use.

we sell $5 USD per dozen chicken eggs, sized large, CA complaint, local mom-and-pop grocers. Feed cost is always a concern, but it's the hours in labor that gets you (people misunderstand that it is farming). We cover costs but profit isn't there; we think of it more as good thing to do for folks around us.
Backyard chickens is a whole other thing; I had calc'ed cost at $1.04 a dozen for 6 hens (the max we before the farm back in 2010).
I spend about $6/week in food for 8 hens and get 2-6 eggs a day. Add treats like mealworms and it could cost more, maybe $10. Ditto on them being great for pest and weed control, and adding great nutrients to the soil if you've got a proper compost set up. Farmers markets are a good resource for extra food scraps, & no food goes to waste. We're in the city & built a strong, enclosed coop (dug down 2 feet and laid wire underneath their run cuz of critters and haven't had any problems).

I've been playing around with this during my free time. Getting the lighting right has proven quite a challenge. Those that follow me on Mastodon might know I made an earlier version with just the blood moon. For this, I almost completely remade it. The only thing I kept was the moon. I even used a higher resolution star map.
It looks much better against a darker background. Lighter backgrounds drown out the stars, ripples in the ocean, and even the iceberg.

@dannycolin Ai in itself is fine. Local LLM translation in Firefox is really good and I'd take it over Google Translate any time. If Mozilla is planning on adding local LLM summary of webpages, fine. If they train it on their own systems and not on user's I'm fine with it.
Firefox is the only browser that still gives us flexibility with about:config. Don't like the Labs panel? You can turn it off. Don't like this or that? You can turn it off. They just need to fix their communication.
The question now is what are the alternatives? A fork of Firefox not doing that crap would be very nice if it had all the same features. I really need the container tab function.

@itsmeholland No, I've been using keepass for years. I'm talking about being able to have two tabs open with a different X account or Google round open in each. Something other browsers don't seem to have that I can tell.
@GoatsLive @itsmeholland you mean profiles? That is in all the other browsers and annoyingly difficult in FF - edge even has built in automation rules so you can for example open outlook in your own profile and admin portal in a separate profile, maintaining separation but allowing links to work.

For me part of it is that in my efforts to engage as little identifying usage information as possible with any one piece of software, I typicaly don't make full use of all available features, even ones that might be useful or convenient. I'm likely to dismiss something called "profiles" as an extraneous feature that would likely turn out to be siphoning data at astonishing rates LOL ๐

I'm already securing the computer enough that you need physical access to it, but that's why it is important to me to have a secure browser that won't do shit with my data, just letting me doing daily stuff without a hassle.

I think ruining projects is a side-effect, not the purple/goal. Management/CEOs want to wring the most short-term profit they can out of an organization while they are running it. That usually means damaging the product/reputation in the long run, but they'll be retired by the time their greed becomes a problem.

Firefox lost a long time ago, but had guaranteed income from the default search engine deals. They tried many things over the years to create another revenue source but failed.
I heard from a Mozilla insider that upcoming fallout from court cases (from even before the current administration) will make those default search engine deals illegal. Which is kind of a good thing but now the org is facing its end and dissolving in predictable ways

I still think appropriate coders, orgs of privacy, online rights, democracy and the intertubes ๐ hold a conference ๐ on enforcing standards, transparency and control to the user.
I wondered too whether this was a ploy to intentionally destroy their browser. I'm at a loss for better explanations why they'd destroy their reputation so meticulously.

@Billyinghart Good question. Both have internal democratic processes, but with coops that process encompasses the entire organization hierarchy, all the way up to owners and executives. With unions its more of a competition thing. And union management's interests aren't always 100% aligned internally. @nixCraft
When the Mozilla Corporation was spun up and Firefox was transferred under it, the writing was on the wall: Mozilla had been captured by VC techbros whose long-term mission will be enshitification. Freemium services, acquisitions, data collection. It's the only formula for value these VC types know.

Yesterday, I tried to help a friend by looking up a kitchen appliance on the Sur La Table web site to see if they carried the product. A few minutes later, I got some spam from some nonentity calling itself surlatable@safeopt.com thanking me for "checking us out." I had not logged in and Firefox was configure to delete cookies when it closes.
I put both on my shit list: what would you do if visited a store and they had someone follow you home and put trash in your mailbox?

@0xF21D @nixCraft @thunderbird I agree but, at the same time, what they did to K9 Mail absolutely sickens me and genuinely makes me question if they have some nefarious motive.
@thunderbird The account drawer was the straw that broke my back but for me it's more about bloat. Before Thunderbird's involvement K-9 was one of the quickest apps on my phone and it just did it's job. I don't need my mobile to sync with my laptop because that's exactly what IMAP is for. If I need something powerful I'll go to my laptop but on mobile I just want it to be quick and painless. Nothing wrong with forking K-9 and creating Thunderbird for Android on top of K-9 for those that want extra features but the majority that were using K-9 were doing so *because* of it's simplicity. Telling us K-9 would continue to exist and then essentially just building Thunderbird and releasing a "branded" version was the wrong thing to do. I miss when K-9 ran on old and under-powered phones - it no longer does that.
Maybe you don't have a nefarious motive but forcing features onto people who don't want them isn't a good look... And is kinda exactly what Mozilla is self destructing over. @kkarhan @0xF21D @nixCraft
Should we make the Bookface theme the site's default for friendica.world? Or should we leave it at the standard 'frio' theme and let users decide for themselves.
I'm just thinking users might not know about the Bookface theme. And in my opinion it makes the site more user-friendly.

Bookface appears to run faster for me. That's a bonus, if it's universal. However, it looks less like FB, which some might find off-putting. My opinion is to try it and see how it goes. We can always change back.
#bookface confuses me. Is it a #theme or a theme #customisation? When I go to Settings, Display Settings, Themes I only find the themes #Frio and #Vier. Theme Customisation is the only place afaik where bookface is mentioned. It offers a choice between three bookface appearances; auto color mode, dark, and light. Am I looking in the wrong place?
@Ruud from my five seconds of testing: it looks much nicer on mobile and fixes Frio's weird tag spacing issues. I'd like to give it a go on desktop before I make a determination for myself, but it's looking good so far.

Haha, I also have the impression the logo is upside down but actually it's still the same. The coloured space and the white space/yellow space both form an "f", one the right way round and one upside down. I never noticed, until I changed the theme.
@Ruud There's obviously some personal preference at work here but I think that making BookFace the default theme (err.. style) is a good idea. For me, it definitely was part of the reason I went from playing around with Friendica to moving here. It really just looks much more modern than the stock Frio theme.
I put my vote for it as the default theme. I've switched to Bookface auto color mode right after your posted your question. It does indeed feel better and cleaner. I especially like the bigger counters for the comments, shares, quotes, likes and dislikes.
@ruud user-friendly should always be default. Us tech nerds will find out how to change things to our liking.
Do you know if any development is on a official Friendica app on android like Pixelfed has a app?
I tried Raccoon, which is fine but if it replaces facebook it needs facebook features which imo is events and big groups. I can't seem to find out how to make a event on raccoon, may not be supported.

But... If you are currently using the standard theme (and are on the account settings page) you can click ">>" in the top left corner to get to other settings.
After you've changed to Bookface it will be the bottom left button that does the same thing.
The >> take me to different things depending on whether I'm in the NEW or CONVERSATIONS or COMMUNITIES tab, but there's never any settings! Your link works, though, thank you!

@Jonas โ no, not intended... I think you discovered a "feature" ๐๐๐ if you manage to read the logcat it would be helpful. Since it crashes at startup I don't think enabling bug reports with Sentry will produce anything beneficial, because it may happen before SDK initialization.
@Jonas โ Ok seen it. It is due to encrypted shared preferences (used to store on device your auth token). It fails to open after you restore the app, probably due to failure to decrypt them because the key changes when you reinstall it. I'll investigate more to see if there are workarounds.

I’m not really much of a comic reader. I like comics, in general, but my standards are very high, especially for graphic novels. Although I had read Phantom, Captain America, and a few other comics before, my first graphic novel was Watchmen. When you start with the best, it’s hard not to feel that everything else is a let down. So it was unsurprising to me that I found Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow lacking. What was surprising was just how lacking it was.
The story is simple. It’s a linear quest. So linear you could use it as a plumb-line. Our narrator, Ruthye, finds her father murdered and desires revenge. She tracks the killer, Krem, which leads her to meet Supergirl. The two women ultimately team up (because reasons) to hunt Krem as he reeks havoc across several galaxies. That’s it!
There’s no twists. We’re told that they succeed in their quest in the very first chapter. The story unfolds in a rather banal fashion. I found myself with no motivation to find out what happens. There’s also little to no character develo

Thereโs no twists. Weโre told that they succeed in their quest in the very first chapter. The story unfolds in a rather banal fashion. I found myself with no motivation to find out what happens. Thereโs also little to no character development. The characters end the same way they started (it is a superhero comic, after all). Effectively, you could read the first chapter, and the last chapter, and save yourself a lot of time. Time you could spend reading another book, watching a movie, or staring at paint drying.
This is the second Tom King comic Iโve read and unfortunately Iโve noticed a trend. He has a touch of JJ Abrams about him. He grabs you with an intriguing beginning, only to allow it to wither away into mediocrity because he doesnโt know how to end it, or middle it (in this case).
The comic tries to end with a hand-wavy, butโฆbutโฆthe subtext, as if the entire story is a morality play. However, it falls flat and comes from nowhere. If I was going to make a sub-textual reading, I would say itโs about an impoverished girl being lectured by a nepobaby. Donโt do the things I just spend the entire comic doing. Itโs bad.
I canโt recommend this book. Itโs truly awful. BTW, thereโs a movie scheduled for release in 2026. Ughh!
