I was catching up with my youngest uncle, who is a big computer nerd like myself. I told him I had finally ditched windows for #linux, (ok, technically I tried doing it back in 2002 but it wasn't ready for primetime back then). He just sent me a copy of The Linux Phrasebook in the mail. While I'm pretty comfortable in the command line, I think this might be a required item for anyone dipping their toes into *nix for the first time.

Dear Network,

I am searching for a new PeerTube Instancefor n816 Life project to complete the instance I already own on infosec.exchange (video.infosec.exchange/a/tofm2…).

Topic: professional Life Sciences video.

Technical specs requested:
- 200 GB available space (illimited is better)
- Immediate account creation (a couple of hours max, urgent need)

I know some lists of PeerTube instances already exist, but I am rather searching for real users experiences, especially concerning the account creation delay.

yeah, it is pretty solid stability wise; the only issue is holding back kernel updates and some oddities with mounting new datasets and such that I find a little awkward.

I suppose I could use Ubuntu, but I am a spite motivated creature and two years on from the absolutely awful interview experience Canonical forced on me, I’m still mad about it and refuse to use Ubuntu 😅

it varies a lot depending on needs (hardware, packages, need for cutting edge well integrated software, etc); currently Arch and Fedora here and there, but NixOS has been in the mix in the past and I have nothing against Debian. I feel like there’s one I’m missing. Oh! Gentoo 😂
But yeah, it usually boils down to the individual machine and what I need out of it. I guess that’s one reason I’m not too into the idea of keeping more than one machine dependent on an out of tree kernel module (this is technically true for proxmox, too, but they obviously handle it on their end rather than me having to use the AUR on Arch, for example).

Nachdem ich nun meinen #raspberrypi samt 8 TB HD fertig mit #NextCloud und #pihole installiert habe, versuche ich mich gerade daran, eine lesbare Version der deutschen #savewikipedia auf der #NextCloud zu installieren.
Ich habe zwar gesehen, wie man den Dump aus der #wikipedia zieht, aber keine Ahnung, ob es möglich ist, diesen dann auch lesbar auf der Cloud zu machen. Wenn irgendjemand eine Idee hat, würde ich mich sehr über Hinweise freuen.

Slowly trying things out...

I've been playing around with the webapp a bit. Trying to update my info, finding people to follow. I've not used FB for years now, so I don't know how much this app differs from what FB was/is these days. Some things make sense, some I need to learn about.

I'll try to write a better profile soon, and do a proper introduction post. Tomorrow will be a busy day, so I'll probably have some time this Friday to finally get things sorted better.

In my rebellious journey against the US oligarchs, Zuck (Facebook) and Bezos (Amazon), I have managed to find alternatives to:

Facebook with Friendica
Twitter with Mastodon or Blue-sky
Google Chrome with Brave
Amazon Music with Qobuz
Spotify (who have donated £150,000 to the orange man who should not be named) with Qobuz

I can confirm that there are very good alternatives and, they are better, because they don't have ads and have better ethos. My journey was interesting and not complicated.

Qobuz has even automatically downloaded my playlists. Impressive.

Curious about downloading #AI model weights

We usually download these pre-trained models from sites like HuggingFace GGUF, Ollama, or vLLM. The companies that build these things tell you if you want to use their models locally, just download their apps or Python scripts, then run a command and it pulls the models for you. Great, nice and easy.

But what if the servers are down, or being blocked by the government or something? Is there anyone out there BitTorrent-ing model weights and paramaters like #DeepSeekR1 ?

Ich weiß, es ist ein schwieriges Thema. Manche Menschen haben nicht die Löffel die aktuelle politische Situation zu ertragen. Möchten mehr Flausch in der Timeline. Mehr Social, weniger Media.

Aber mal als Mahnung. Wenn die #Faschisten an der Macht sind, wird es eine #Gleichschaltung der Medien geben.

Und "wokes" Social Media, inklusive des #Fediverse, wird dazugehören.

Die Instrumente gibt es jetzt schon und Admins leben hier im Graubereich.

Evtl. gibt es bald keine freien Plattformen mehr.

Offering really good specs and a wide variety of #Linux OS such as #kubuntu , #linuxmint , #Ubuntu2404 and many others. Any help would be appreciated

Ich bin #neuhier auf fedi.at. Im Fediversum bin ich schon ein gutes Jahrzehnt unterwegs. Jetzt habe ich mir hier einen Account angelegt, in der Hoffnung mich in meinem Heimatland Österreich besser vernetzen zu können.

Mich treiben vor allem technisch sociale Fragen um. Besonders die zunehmende Abhängigkeit gegenüber internationalen Großkonzernen besorgt mich.

Ich setze mich für digitade Selbstbestimmung ein, was für mich auch freie (im Sinne von Freiheit und nicht notwendigerweise gratis) Soft- und Hardware beinhaltet. Hauptberuflich entwitkle ich auch, leider nicht so frei wie ich gerne würde aber zumindest muss ich nur in Ausnahmefällen Windows anfassen.

Auch übers Gärtnern und über Fahrräder tausche ich mich gerne aus, hiervon habe ich aber weit weniger Ahnung.

New to site

Hi all, just starting to learn how to use this site after leaving facebook due to their hate speech changes.

Just so you know, I am what everyone now refers to as trans. This is not something that you decide you want to be you are born this way and cannot change it any more then you can change being human. Yes god made me this way and so the best way to look at it is that its like a major development as a fetus that doesn't develop along the same line as what is considered normal development. Some think of it as a birth defect like so many others that they know about. However too many accept all the misinformation about us and call us perverts/pedophiles etc and just want us destroyed.

I could go on and on about this and how it has effected my life but it will not change how all the lies that has made life harder for me.

Feel free to ask questions and I will answer as best I can.

Interacting with Mastodon conversations

I guess I'm doing something wrong, but I'm trying to comment on Mastodon conversations from this Friendica instance, but it doesn't seem to work.
I have follow a person, and replied to one of their posts a good 6 hours ago.
I logged in to my mastodon account and found the same thread, but could not see the reply from my Friendica instance, though I could see the same replies from other people as I can via Friendica.

I'm completely new to Friendica, so I'm guessing I have overlooked something?

Disclaimer - I have no specific knowledge, and this is an educated guess based on what I know as a user of distributed social media.

Friendica advertises that it has integrations for various ActivityPub/alternative social media services. My guess is it's one-way only. Friendica gets content from other sources, but without buy in from Mastodon devs, Friendica content won't show up there.

@Peter Sørensen I just signed up for Friendica and I'm noticing the same thing. I'm not sure what's going on either, but I did notice that replies to Mastodon from Friendica seem to be hit or miss so far (mostly miss, but not completely). I noticed that someone else's reply from another Friendica instance than my own shows up in Mastodon, but my replies don't. I'm starting to wonder if it may be something broken with specific Friendica instances.

I told my wife about the new meta rules carving out that it's ok to call lgbt+ people mentally unstable etc, but nobody else.
She said she couldn't believe i fell for such obviously stupid headlines, so then I went to their website and showed it to her.
Yep this is real life!
The pendulum is gaining a lot of momentum for intolerance of assholes and actually giving a shit about people.
I for one cannot wait.

I'd like to point out, apropos of something I saw this weekend, that the suggestion to write an #introduction post assumes that new users *want* to be found.

Some people are here because they've had bad experiences on other social media sites--or even other instances--and would like to be quiet for a bit. It's OK to be a wallflower and watch from the shadows for a while until you feel comfortable. And you are in no way obligated to disclose more about yourself than you wish to.
