As JD Vance delivered his speech about “European overregulation” and criticized “endless compliance costs imposed on the US companies by GDPR” I have seen some voices from Europe who said something to the effect “I don‘t know a single EU company happy about #GDPR either”.
Well, it’s kind of obvious companies aren’t happy because GDPR was not made to make companies happy but to protect the privacy of consumers 😄
This regulation is based on fundamental differences between US and EU legal systems. In EU, you own and control your personal data. In US it’s owned by whoever managed to extort it from you, and then aggregate, personalise and resell to any other entity anywhere.
For example, if you want to pay higher insurance premium because you have genetic tendencies to diabetes or obesity - well, that’s the US way of doing business, but it’s not the only one, nor it’s somehow axiomatically “better”. And yes, high insurance premiums also have the effect of increasing overall country’s GDP, just as a house burnt and rebuilt also does this magic, yet somehow few people celebrate it 😉
Then someone asked me if I really “feel that my data is better protected thanks to GDPR”. And yes, as a matter of fact the most invasive behavioural profiling aren’t being rolled out by companies like Twitter or Facebook to EU specifically because of GDPR, while in US they just roll them out without asking anyone.
Anyone… of course except for the states which have regulations very similar or even more restrictive than GDPR, such as California. Yet, because California is “their”, these companies and their CEOs with high media presence simply shut up and make their apps compliant with CCPA without all this barking about “how GDPR kills out business”.
It’s the same with EU VAT, about which Vance also whined, whereas US sales tax accounting rules are not even harmonized across states. But hey, you know what? An US business that has to emply a tax consulting company to get multi-state accounting right also increases overall GDP! 😄
So effectively what in US is perceived as each state’s fundamental right, sign of their diversity and key part of their autonomy, in the EU is portrayed as something equivalent to Soviet Union style central planning. And when they post all the memes about “bottle caps” in EU, they of course never mention a gazillion of state-level archaic or absurd regulations which are nonetheless binding, especially if someone likes to build a class lawsuit around them.
And now as Tesla opened a new factory in #China, I’ve never seen Musk make a single critical remark about the overregulation in China, even though it’s even more complex than EU and US taken together due to its vast geographic and administrative diversity.

Besides, if anything needs attention, it's the final status of Formosa.

To be fair if we forget Russia a moment, diverse sources of energy is ALWAYS better than one, so it's really not crazy for someone to have that thought, especially when we KNOW Germany has been struggling with energy for years now.
People need to stop labeling someone a Russia bot as soon as they have a different opinion than them.
(And going on the person's profile, it's the most German thing I've ever seen, Russian bots have empty or generic profiles).
And I meant in my toot only an real independence and its definition. Nothing more.
we haven’t been struggling for power, despite what right-wing media want to make you believe.
The profile says Luxembourg, but the rest does quite reek like bot, it doesn’t feel germanish enough, so I’m on the side for that. Blocking is a good thing to do at this point, too.
@richlv The heck you want from me and my wife, dude?! Do you even know any of us both to state your idiotic opinions about us?
Did any of us written something about your person? Or to you? Did we?!
So, be so kind and keep your sticky fingers away.
And if you are searching for something fishy, go to the bathroom and look into the mirror. There you will find it.
Greetings and have a great day.
@MartinaNeumayer Freedom never was free.
Freedom from Putin will cost all of us dearly, but it is oh so worth it.
@EUCommission
I don't think that russia delivered the power for free.
@gunstick I didn't written anything about country, one or another, nor political thing. I did written about sematic.
And yes, the most nicest thing is to not have any bills at all. That's an true independence. Not being related, dependent on anyone, and anything etc.
Do you think why so many people are going off grid in recent times? Why they don't want to have anything to do with power companies and similar?
That's why.. To not have bills. Not pay extortion to these companies.
Having a continental interconnected grid helps.
@MartinaNeumayer Same thing as it was with gas. How much did they raise prices? 300 percent in a matter of year? Do I remember correctly? People almost had heart attacks when they saw their bills. It was supposed to be so beautiful, but the stinking shit came out from under the pink wrapper very quickly.
My friend paid circa 250 per month, and now he is paying almost 600 for the same amount of gas. And only a year has passed. One year only! It's a frickin joke! 😡🤬
And ordinary people cried because they did not know where to get money for the next pay rises. That's why the whole idea about moving away from this gernan/eu driven mess.
@MartinaNeumayer@mastodon.social 🤡 you clearly stuck to ruZZian propaganda!
plugged into "European union".... Russia is also partly in Europe....
Nice move, though, now how about a real trans EU power grid? It's more than annoying when some parts of the EU burn Energy from renewable sources into waste heat, whilst at the same moment, other parts fire up coal generators....
This is a monumental step for Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania! Disconnecting from the Russian power grid and integrating into the EU energy market showcases resilience, unity, and strategic foresight. It’s a testament to the power of collaboration and long-term planning. A historic leap towards energy independence and a stronger, more unified Europe. 🇪🇺

BUT WHY we should celebrate a disconnection from Russia???

@Aknorals I am sorry if I was unclear. All you said I also see.
I see the power cable going from Finland to Estonia. And from Sweden to Lithuania. There is no power cable going from Latvia to any other country - thus that was why I made my comment.

@dzedus
Gahh, yes, the PSE in Poland is the main gateway. I know that. And thanks for the link. But it has nothing to do with where my thought was. I was talking about redundancy, such as back up systems.
The map used is showing the power cable between Finland & Estonia, and between Sweden and Lithuania. There are no power cables going to/from Latvia.
I think it would be good if each country had a back up system for power transfers.
For the uninformed commenters.
This isn't "changing dependencies" as the Baltics also generate their own electricity, sometimes buying and sometimes selling on the regional energy market Nord Pool. This change just syncs the grids with the rest of the EU, meaning smoother transfers and a hopefully more varied and sustainable mix of electricity for both sides. Also a more stabile grid for the Baltics and one less thing Moscow can leverage against them.
Alex@rtnVFRmedia Suffolk UK reshared this.
And to combat another Kremlin propaganda talking point being parroted here: energy prices in the Baltics were around the EU average a year ago (I believe several years earlier as well) and will almost certainly continue to be in roughly the same correlation going forward.
The idea that being connected to the Russian grid (while not even buying from them) kept prices lower in the Baltics somehow is nonsense.
ALN reshared this.
so I might start calling it "european" once they're up to the "european" standard, e.g. not inviding their neighbours
CC: @stfn@fosstodon.org @EUCommission@ec.social-network.europa.eu
Interesting question: what now happens to the electricity grid in #Kaleningrad? It's obviously now isolated from the Russian grid, but this map shows it now isolated from the new #BalticStates grid, too.
Does it become an island, in power grid terms?
The EU is investing in clean energy sources, and the Baltic countries have, for years, invested in alternatives to Russian fossil fuels. They aim for most of their energy to come from renewables. Lithuania, for example, aims for 100% renewable electricity by 2030. We see a shiny future ahead for the Baltics!

Anyway, they are sure better than Swasticars and Trucks.
For one thing, if you are in a stalled Pinto on a freeway, and are rear-ended by a bigger Ford Galaxy, it's not going to turn out well.
I also believe that people would have still bought Pinto models if Ford had disclosed "This could have been safer, but we didn't choose to do that. gas tank behind axle is not best-practice. Rear end beware".
But safety standards do reduce risk, as you know !
@jab01701mid
I had a '72 Pinto (in 1985-1988). It had a hole under the driver's side floor mat, and more holes under the seat itself. I once soaked myself and all my high school friends, hitting a puddle at 30 mph. I also nearly wrecked it avoiding a raccoon in the road, because I knew it would come up through the floor either in pieces or very angry.
The passenger seat adjuster was broken, so the seat just rolled forward a bit when I stopped, and back again when I accelerated. Luckily, the adjustment wheels were rusted, so it didn't roll quickly, but it was known as The Ejector Seat, and I got very good at easing up to stop signs. The Pinto did have seatbelts, but that was pretty much the only safety feature. It was clear that, in an accident, the only thing the Pinto would bring to the table was an added risk of tetanus.
My rule of thumb was to drive fast enough to never be rear-ended. And that thing could go, too, shedding rust flakes and small nonessential parts all up and down I-95.

So many things feel like metaphors these days.
Amusingly, this car had previously been an Official Government Vehicle. A family member had been mayor of our town, and city officials insisted he have a "city car". He thought this was dumb and wasteful, and authorized the purchase of the cheapest thing he could find. I'm not 100% sure why he still had it, but I think the same officials who insisted he get it insisted he take it with him.
No seriously EVH or Jimmy are high compliments for a wannabe guitarist and Pinto mechanic.
@jab01701mid my mom also had a Pinto she remembers fondly, but I don't know what year. It was the early models with the fire hazard right?
Also are we irony poisoned enough as a society that Ford could bring the Pinto back and kinda wink and laugh about it? I don't think it's impossible.
We lately seem to get inured to statistical information. I mean even "17% more likely to kill you by fire than a Pinto" should be a frightening risk in a modern car, and notable news.
But here they're talking 1700%. Yet somehow in this 'modern' reality that's not grounds to pull it off the road.

There is one that drives around my neighbourhood. The problem is, every time I see it, I can only think of it as a truck trying to look like a utility, but having zero utility functions.
It's pretty useless, other than as a really expensive way to get around. And now apparently, a frikken death trap lol...
I read the article on #Cybertruck explosions at fuelarc.com/evs/its-official-t… and left a comment because I figured maybe some positive feedback would be a good thing. The reply: "Got your note - glad you survived your Ford Pinto! I'm reading through a pile of death threats and hate mail from Tesla investors and their associated bots, pleased me to hear from you."

The system definitely scans photos for nudity already. Today they claim the feature only runs on certain apps but as we've seen with Apple and various world governments there's a major tendency for these sorts of features to creep into all of your content whether that's what Google intended in their first release or not.

A few folks are questioning if AI scanning like what Android is doing can be missused. The last time a similar feature was coming to Apple's iOS the media rightly described it as an extremely dangerous warrantless surveillance tool.
Regardless of what Android developers intended this client side scanner to do it will be enlisted by governments of the world to spy on you and break strong encryption.

Of course it's possible that Google is lying, but the evidence to support the main claim of surveillance isn't here.

To me it's not clear what this app does, in particular if it sends data back somewhere. That is the problem. That an OS regularly installs new components seems normal.
So once again, people complain about the wrong issues, and I feel this doesn't help, even if it is popular. It doesn't help, because Google can now say, all these complaints have nothing to do with reality, which is not wrong. But instead we should ask for more transparent and easily accessible info.
And I'm not saying this App is harmless. I just seem to have difficulties finding info about it.

"The app doesn't provide client-side scanning used to report things to Google or anyone else. It provides on-device machine learning models usable by applications to classify content as being spam, scams, malware, etc."
Forgive me if I'm not understanding correctly, but to clarify:
That statement could be misconstrued to suggest that "on-device machine learning models usable by applications to classify content" is different and distinct from "client-side scanning". To clarify, those're two ways of saying the same thing, with one being more specific. Do you really intend to just point out that it doesn't report things to Google or anyone else by default, and/or that the "client side scanning" is a scan-on-request thing, and not a let's-scan-the-whole-device-by-default thing?
What's stopping any app from using the output of the "on-device machine learning models" to report to third parties?
I've said it before and I'll say it again, really appreciate what you do.
Right now, in the January patch of Android 13, I don't seem to have it

I'm not sure if that app specifically scans photos, AFAIK it only scans for malicious apps- although if they broadened the scope that wouldn't be surprising to me either.
I however do know that the EU and USA both mandate running CSAM scanners on any cloud platform, so if you upload anything to Google Drive, OneDrive, Dropbox, iCloud, etc, you will definitely get screened for CSAM and alike.
As much as I hate that, the only way around that is to run your own infra from scratch.
Exactly. Right at a time when SMS(RCS) end-to-end security is improving isn't it odd that suddenly there's so much helpful client side AI that wants to read your messages. 🤔
Is -accidently- sending a nude really this big of a problem that ALL android users need this feature turned on by default without warning over night?

The way Graphene handled releasing this feature (opt in, not installed by default, thorough risk analysis) is exactly the opposite of how Android released it(opt-out, installed OTA by default, limited explaintion)
While I agree with the Graphene team's analysis(client side AI can work in the user's best interest, some people might want & like this one) I think the style of rollout on Android alone is enough for many privacy minded folks to not trust this new feature

The wording of this paragraph is very specific and we should not paraphrase this.
> All of this happens on-device to protect your privacy and keep end-to-end encrypted message content private to only sender and recipient.
which i think would imply it doesn't get sent to someone else either? it sounds like they're using an on device machine learning model to classify images then only use that result locally

@GhostOnTheHalfShell I think "deplorian" and "wankpanzer" are more generic terms for the unnecessarily large vehicles that so many people drive these days.
Not going to comment on weak minds or small penises, I'm sure some people really need them, have their own plans for coping with the impending doom of climate change, and drive extra carefully to avoid the carnage that others with similar vehicles cause to other road users and pedestrians.
"Swasticar" and "swastitruck" I feel should be reserved for vehicles made by actual nazis such as Elon Musk.

Calm down, friends, in a real rotten state ransacked by some fascist militia you'd never be told in advance that they'll come for you, even less so would the gangster in chief in person be the one to tell you.
Honesty, both are wrong. Naming private individuals publicly is just as wrong as giving access to someone like Muck. The ones who have to be hold accountable are the once agreeing to it in the first place. All of this is giving me the ick.
Edit ot add:
In Bulgaria we had a very nasty anty LGBTQ law managed to pass in schools and there are a list of teachers signing a petition against it. The petition and the names are technically public. The farthest right wing party posted a "black-list" of those teachers to their far right audience and excused themselves saying it's public information. There was harassment, there were dead threats. It was a mess. Do you see now why technicality means nothing in these situations? Wrong is wrong, morally wrong. Is it technically a crime as per Musky suggestion - probably not but still not a move I can support.
Second edit:
I'm absolutely not against information being public as I wasn't against the petition being public. But it's one thing having it avaliable to whoever decides to purposely look for it and a whole other thing to post it as a sort of black-list to an angry crowd on the other side of the political spectrum as some sort of silent punishment -esque move.

@mayaisloading I kinda get your point here, but we have public accountability for a reason.
If someone is using that accountability for retaliation, then you address the retaliation. That is the morally wrong part.
Once you start bending accountability rules, both sides have a right to play the game of "but you'll just misuse it" and then the whole system fails.
@mayaisloading You're getting sidetracked by circumstance.
There is a basic right in a democracy for transparency. How you feel it is being used is completely irrelevant. That right allows for accountability and must be upheld.
Accountability is even more important when the individuals being named are a direct threat to the democracy.
And hey, just because you and I can't do anything about these guys doesn't mean no one can.
People break laws and get away with it so why have laws at all, eh?
Who cares if the people know what's going on in their government? If transparency and accountability are not 100% effective then why have them at all?
No. I do not agree with this.
@mayaisloading I'm afraid your point wasn't really clear at all.
You came into the thread complaining to multiple people about naming these guys who are actively and illegally working to undermine our nation. Naming them offended your sensibility.
We are in a constitutional crisis and unless you are going to actually submit some of those more useful strategies you mention, maybe don't pull down others who are doing what they can to inform.
@jimbob @solitha @mwguy
I mean they might be handpicked because of their knowledge or because of their ignorance. The second is also a possible strategy. I don't like assumptions.
But the point is, if they just disappear into thin air tomorrow, half an hour later there would be a new team assembled. Nothing would change. But if Trump or Musk disappear, everything would change. So any strategy against the tech guys is basically fruitless at this stage in particular and not worth moving the focuse from the core issue. On top of the lack of morals I see behind black lists.
@mayaisloading They are Elon loyalists. They've worked for him before.
And we know that because they've been IDENTIFIED PUBLICLY so that people could look up their backgrounds.
As @jimbob says, they are collaborators. Co-conspirators. Acting illegally and knowingly.
While it would be utterly delightful for Trump/Musk to "disappear" as you say, the odds of that happening are nil. But naming and shaming might keep other script kiddies from stepping up.
@mayaisloading Literally no one said that being a Musk fanboy is a crime.
No one. Ever.
You really have a problem with trying to stop more criminals from committing crime? Seriously?
I literally listed a paragraph of more useful strategy to a comment of yours. And you chose to address none of it. And now you act dumbfounded as if I just said nothing works and suggested no alternative. Nah, I didn't suggest a detailed (for a social media comment) alternatives I believe to be much more fruitful.
Also, I don't know what "complaining to multiple people" suppose to mean. I came into the thread, I presented a different viewpoint, which apparently doesn't happen much on social media echo chambers unfortunately. Than I proceeded to answer the comments that popped under my original comment. I'm not like picking people from the thread who didn't interacted to me..?
Lastly, naming them didn't "offend my sensibility", it reminded me of this approach being used to scare and silence people into obedience to a very discriminatory law. Which is apparently the second thing you have failed to read before making the points in your comment.
If you mean the really long one? It was vague and more than a little difficult to comprehend, I'm afraid. I took what I could out of it, and addressed what I thought was important and understood well enough.
I'm not trying to be mean; I gather you're not a native English speaker? And perhaps there's a bit of a language barrier.
Yes, I do.
I also understand we're about to lose OUR WHOLE FREAKING COUNTRY and do immense damage to the world economy and maybe the time for singing Kumbaya is not now.
I am not interested in us making friendly gestures towards people who would like to jump in and help destroy us.
Triage. We need to stop the damage before trying to repair.
you think it will be a minority if the treasury goes down? I don’t.
As far as normalizing this approach? MIS-use of a thing is a problem. But that doesn't mean the thing is the problem. Your Bulgarian teachers? That's a societal problem.
@mayaisloading I hear they are pushing new code directly into production, which means it could go down at any given moment.
Honestly, it feels like you're indulging in magical thinking. We cannot rely on Trump or Musk just "disappearing" and in Trump's case it wouldn't matter. We cannot just talk this out against decades of propaganda.
1/2
@mayaisloading Okay, you're editing posts to be longer and longer and I don't have the character limit you do.
"Complaining to multiple people" means I am bad at following threading. Apologies.
Re: "offending your sensibilities"... you're worried these poor innocent kids might get in trouble. But naming them allowed us to see they are not, actually, poor innocent kids. They know what kind of person they're working for, and they very likely know they are acting illegally.
Sorry, didn't know charecters limit is an issue. I'm not that concerned about them in particular, more about normalizing this approach makes it into a good weapon towards other people (for example the ones protesting the law) and being justified by "well, you did it first".
@mayaisloading @mwguy stupid college kids with decision making power...
Come on dummy, keep the fuck up.
@mayaisloading @mwguy Following orders is not an excuse when committing a crime.
Expect them to suffer the consequences, while their bosses will get out of jail pardons.
there's even a concept of citizen's arrest in many countries, including USA; these kids are committing a crime.
If a private citizen (usually this just means literally anyone, the citizenship doesn't matter) arrests, leave alone names, any of them, it would be perfectly legal.
Crimes only matter if significant enough portion of the people understand they are crimes. Work on increasing this, the rest is counter productive.
If tomorrow more than half of the world decides murder is not a crime, you can scream the names of murderers to your less than half of the world echo chamber all you want and you will achieve nothing. Trying to shut my points with technicality is precisely why this has even been allowed to happen in November. Because instead of a welcoming open conversation, the liberals are crying "nazis" in the liberals echo chembers and basically change the opinion to no one. Then when the vote was clear, it was such a surprise because one could have never guessed it from the highly liberal echo chamber. And it's very unfortunate turn of events. But yeah, by any means, continue doing the same mistake over and over again.

I might misunderstand what that visa means but I can't imagine living my home country for a country I feel is in need of revolution.
@mayaisloading home country? oh well, not everyone really has one. Our home "country" can be perhaps described, qua our passports, as European Union, at best; the only EU language everyone in the family speaks is English. We relocated from UK, where medical services didn't provide our not very healthy son adequate care (any idea how inadequately treated epilepsy looks like?), and schools were routinely excluding him. At least the latter two things are much better here in Illinois, believe it or not.
H1-B visa is a standard temporary employment US visa.
@mayaisloading hi Maya, do you think that they do not understand what they have agreed to be the instruments of?
I suppose they know perfectly well what they are doing, and do not care at all that it is illegal because they are aware that once there is no democratic administration, they will never face any consequences. I would not absolve them of their responsibility.
I think people agreeing to dismantle a country under a fascist are the issue.
@mayaisloading we clearly have different perspectives and levels of faith in humankind.
I see these men as complicit in a coup. If they do not care to check if their actions are criminal, that's less important. "I didn't know it is a crime" is not really a defense, and here we're not talking public consumption of alcohol, or advocating for a repressed minority, but dismantling a country. It's serious and deserves public outcry.
We won't agree on it but thanks for the reply.
Thank you for the "agree to disagree" aproach. Just wahted to clear I'm not against a public outcry here, it's needed, I just disagree with the way it's done.

I would say, keep a known database with government figures that everyone could access if they want to, don't just flash them to a social media angry crowd that has a good amount of toxic individual in any side of the molitical spectrum, focus on the ones enabling the actions, rather than the ones doing the "diry work" because without being enabled it wouldn't have happend and also strongly focus on the action itself and why it is the wrong choice not in a "us vs them" manner but in a more open conversation manner so it could actually get to much more people and not just the once who already know it's wrong and a problem. That's my 2 cents, that's how I would try tackling a similar situation. It's not perfect but I believe it's at least a tiny bit more effective than mockery and silent intimidation to a handful of collage kids.
@mayaisloading
I don't see how these are the same things. The teachers in your example were signing a petition protesting a law and were singled out for that.
These guys are *committing crimes* against the government and people.ot.the US. They may even be stealing from us. So they need to be identified publicly to make sure that that can be held accountable for any and all crimes they commit or abet.
Ok, I might misunderstand the situation 'cause I'm not following closely at all but isn't it basically Trump creating a new government agency with Musky who is given the power to bring whoever he find fitting? (I'm not saying any involvement in Musk or another billionaire with no political experience is ever a right option but if that's the case, it's not a crime, it's dumb governance, or if it's a crime /I don't know the US legal system/ it is a crime from Trump, not from random tech guys brought for the job)
Btw, the far right said also they are outing the teachers because "those teachers are threatening to break the law and families should protect their children from them and ask the schools from explanation". I'm not saying they are right in the slightest but using this argument enables the far right of saying it through their prism and using it to promote hate and alienation so I feel it's just a shaky ground to step onto. Information has to be public but listing individuals on social media is a different step. Information could be public without this too.
@mayaisloading
You are close but not quite there yet. There is no official government agency. Musk has been given carte blanche control over federal information technology systems, even though he is not a federal employee, has not been approved by any government entity, and does not hold the requisite security clearances for 99% of what he's doing.
They just show up and say give us the keys.
There is no audit. This is 100% criminal.
Even if I repeat myself: I still don't get why there's no protests, people on the streets, turmoil.
Because the conversation is kept to a very closed liberal crowd who already knew it's a problem and are using the time to mock a bunch of college students and silently intimidate them instead of making an open conversation about why the action is problematic and getting more people on their side. The same crowd who hasn't been enough to prevent it in November and wouldn't be enough by doing the same thing that was done then - laughing among themselves how stupid the republicans are and alienating instead of educating anyone who dares to get to the liberal part of the internet with not "liberal enough" opinion. Great PR, guys.

Transparency might be a helpful tool if the political system is still intact with checks and balances. Without those it becomes a violent way for the powerful to show themselves being untouchable. A forceful way to say "resistance is futile".
I tend to favor radical transparency myself but we can't trust *this* regime to do it honestly.

lonE just wants to be the only one painting targets...
Btw, good screenshots which, in my oppinion, would be even better with the original timestamp. The fifth one just hasn´t one.
The fact that he is financially dependent on china and has un-monitored phone calls with Putin obviously should have no bearing on this. I am certain that any US government employee applying for a security clearance while receiving massive payments from China would be cleared without any problems.
On the other hand, Musk and Thiel do make Trump's statements that emigrants are destroying our country more plausible.
Great so when is Elon releasing his tax records and that of all of his companies to the public as a gesture of good faith and all his companies government contracts.
I don't know why they let them in. If they don't have valid building passes they should not got past the security area. Next time when they show up detain them and have the police escort them out in handcuffs.
If they are to be allowed access then the type of passes that is for visitors is issued and they are escorted 100% of the time, no exceptions.

Hypocrisy doesn’t matter, because they don’t see it as hypocrisy. While the video is primarily about Jon Stewart, it applies to pretty much every attempt to try and lay “hypocrisy traps” for the right. They don’t care because the point isn’t that _no one_ should do those things, it’s that they believe in a hierarchy and only those at the top of the hierarchy should do those things.

We Choose to Fight: Nobody Elected Elon!
**Rally at the Treasury building to stop Elon Musk’s billionaire takeover.** Nobody elected Elon! We need everyone to fight this hostile takeover at every level—that includes Democrats in Congress, who need to unite and do everything in their power t…Mobilize
Actually he and his team are legitimate government personnel (Musk is a Special Government employee). Doge is a legal dept. within the OMB. It's a reorganization and rename of the United States Digital Service (which was also created by an EO under Obama).
Also, every federal agency is staffed with unelected people, none of the employees in these agencies are elected and many of them have access to your information every day. So this is nothing novel.
I understand partisan/ideological biases are at play but I would actually have thought everyone would be in favor of uncovering waste and fraud in the government, regardless of which side is in power. We are already seeing tons of waste being uncovered, much you can't possibly debate as not being ridiculous.
The real problem though, is government itself. Both parties are corrupt in their own way (though both love wars). Government always increases in size and becomes more corrupt since government attracts the sociopaths in society. I challenge people to open their minds, think outside the box, step outside of tribal politics and read books such as "Democracy, The God That Failed" by Hoppe, "Anatomy of the State" by Rothbard, "Road to Serfdom" by Hayek, "Chaos Theory" by Murphy. A big part of the problem is education (because of our horrible education system). Most people don't even know what federalism is or how the US was structured (tldr; it's a union of states not a single nation state).
Also, and not quite related to this post but realize everything goes in cycles, everything. From milankovitch and lunar cycles, climate, financial markets, and even generational cycles. These days are playing out similarily to past war/generational cycles and so these last couple decades promised to be turbulent based on the timing of where we are in these cycles. (Highly recommend reading both The Fourth Turning and The Fourth Turning is Here to understand this).

what's your opinion about Mastodon vs Bluesky?
it would be an interesting topic for a video. think about it.
of course not the differences about how they work (decentralized vs centralized, open source vs proprietary etc: there's already too much content about that), but how is your own personal experience different in the two platforms.
I can't find anything about this topic around as for now.
@elCelio great input. Thanks.
To make a YouTube video that is watched by more than a few, I have to find an angle that would appeal broadly, and an idea that would make a good thumbnail. Sadly, YouTube is full of content no one watches. Not saying I applaud that. Just saying, this is how it is.
I want to make this video, but I have not found this idea. Making a thumbnail that tells people they are on the wrong social medium will not be effective, because people are very resistant to change.

in reply to kravietz 🦇 • • •GDPR is indeed designed to protect consumers, not make companies happy. Nevertheless, it is very common for companies to be satisfied that protective regulations exist, because they act as deterrent against fly-by-night operations undercutting their offering.
It's akin to saying that European electrical suppliers weren't happy for CE testing. Sure it's difficult, but the outcome is a safer market.

Actually, this is a very bad source for GDPR advice, because it’s a website run by ProtonVPN whose purpose is to present GDPR as a scary thing that only their VPN protects you from 😂
And yes, on this website it indeed is unclear, but it’s done on purpose (see above). On the ICO guidance which I’ve just referred you to it’s quite clear - you need a combination of indicators that together uniquely identify an individual for that data to be PII. If it’s not unique or insufficient to identify that person, it’s not PII.

They use conditional statements (“often sufficient”) because they deal with a generic topic. If you ask them about your SSH server, they will quite certainly answer “nah, it’s not PII”… unless you explicitly assign your users with usernames like
john.smith.dob.07-03-1998
… in which case the IP will be the least of your worries 😀@samueljohnson

in reply to kravietz 🦇 • • •My problem with GDPR is the opposite - namely how it harms big corporations least.
For example, me running a SSH server on my personal vserver became technically illegal as the SSH protocol does not support the necessary disclosures, and happily logs every login attempt to the system log (where it tends to age out after 7 days as no one ever looks there anyway unless something is wrong).
I am aware that this kind of log would be permitted under the GDPR if it were properly disclosed. I would also be required to disclose my home address to the entire world just because I run SSH.
IMHO the very least GDPR should have done would be an exclusion so entities that do not use data in a way that requires explicit permission do not need to comply with the disclosure, legal entity etc. requirements. Maybe further conditioned by not making any profit.

in reply to SamuelJohnson • • •@samueljohnson It's not been decided by a court, but:
- SSH port is open to anyone.
- Anyone who connects to it - and be it by entering http://ipaddress:22 in the browser address bar - will cause log lines to be written.
- The logging includes the source IP address, which is generally considered PII.
As such, it quite obviously falls into the scope of the GDPR.
As for the logging of the IPs itself, that clearly falls under "legitimate interest" as per Article 6(1) GDPR - so that is fine per se.
Art. 13 GDPR is the real problem with SSH - the right to be informed. The protocol doesn't even provide a _way_ for the connecting individual to be informed about these things.
Clearly the authors of the GDPR did not _intend_ to place 20 million EUR penalties on private individuals who happen to run a vserver with SSH access. And I also presume it won't actually be _applied_ like that. But ultimately it depends on whether someone will file a GDPR compliant, and how the DPA will treat that report. I suppose unless a wild #Gravenreuth appears, people should be safe.
SamuelJohnson
in reply to divVerent • • •@divVerent Your assertion that an IP address is "generally considered PII" is entirely false and you cannot provide a citation from any credible source to support that proposition.
I suggest you look up some definitions of PII and then consider the many reasons why an IP address is never included.
Better not to spread misinformation.

in reply to kravietz 🦇 • • •In fact, there are many companies happy with the EU GDPR. When you allow a company to cheat their customers, spy on them and sell their data for billions, that company can use their ill gotten gains to undercut other companies, driving them out of business. As with any regulation, companies that aren't hurting people will prosper, and companies that are hurting people will fail.
That politician is just conveniently ignoring all the small businesses completely unimpacted by the GDPR because they don't collect data, who make more money, and achieve higher prosperity since Faceboogle is too inconvenienced to steal that money and prosperity from their customers first. Apparently he "doesn't know" about them.

Except when you make prostitution illegal. Then all the pimps that survive are conveniently evil gits. Funny how that works out...
