In fact, there are many companies happy with the EU GDPR. When you allow a company to cheat their customers, spy on them and sell their data for billions, that company can use their ill gotten gains to undercut other companies, driving them out of business. As with any regulation, companies that aren't hurting people will prosper, and companies that are hurting people will fail.

That politician is just conveniently ignoring all the small businesses completely unimpacted by the GDPR because they don't collect data, who make more money, and achieve higher prosperity since Faceboogle is too inconvenienced to steal that money and prosperity from their customers first. Apparently he "doesn't know" about them.

Also pimps are totally in support of sexworkers rights. That's why they operate brothels to protect their employees from abusive customers and inclement weather. Except when you make prostitution illegal. Then all the pimps that survive are conveniently evil gits. Funny how that works out...

Women need to follow Quebec's model: Under the Civil Code of Québec, both spouses retain their respective names in marriage and exercise civil rights under those names. Consequently, if a married woman wants to adopt her spouse's surname, the Directeur de l'état civil will authorize that change of name only in an exceptional situation.

Where were they when Giuliani and cohorts roamed the realm bloating false claims for years? Or Roe v. Wade was overturned by a biased SCOTUS?

I mean, Giuliani got the boot finally but what about the rest? Shouldn't they provide some oversight over the profession in general?

Plugged into Europe! 🔌

Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania have officially disconnected from the Russian power grid, marking a historic leap towards energy independence.

After preparing for the integration into the EU energy market for almost two decades, the countries now have proper infrastructure linking them to the European continental grid.

This EU-supported initiative allows to fully benefit from the European common energy system.

A bold move of resilience and unity 🇪🇪 🇱🇻 🇱🇹 ⚡️

Hey @Remittancegirl! We can’t send sunshine from Spain to the Baltics, but we can share the power of renewables! 🌞
The EU is investing in clean energy sources, and the Baltic countries have, for years, invested in alternatives to Russian fossil fuels. They aim for most of their energy to come from renewables. Lithuania, for example, aims for 100% renewable electricity by 2030. We see a shiny future ahead for the Baltics!

On Blocking, Mastodon HOA Edition.

One of Mastodon's biggest barriers to entry is the Mastodon HOA, the massive volunteer army of scolds who take it upon themselves to tell strangers that they are doing it wrong. It's like you're waiting in line at...

A bigger question would be. What is really the function of the #Fediverse. Is it passive content consumption or curated passive content consumption. Or is it really for interaction of users? These knee jerk reaction from user in order to "control" what others say, do and think are really to ingrained in ourselves (Humans) and we will bring them everywhere we go.

Major privacy alert for Android users.

You remember #Apple scanning all images on your #mobile device?

If you have an #Android #phone, a new app that doesn't appear in your menu has been automatically and silently installed (or soon will be) by #Google. It is called #AndroidSystemSafetyCore and does exactly the same - scan all images on your device as well as all incoming ones (via messaging). The new spin is that it does so "to protect your #privacy".

You can uninstall this app safely via System -> Apps.

I'm sorry but this refers only to the recognition process.
It is absolutely unclear how the recognition actually works and where the data or procedure comes from, that is used for this purpose and what happens with data, that is not explicitly mentioned in this text.

It is once again time to give thanks to Brian Fox, the Black American programmer that has given us BASH and echo! Thank you for your INCREDIBLE contributions to open source software, Unix, and Linux. It literally would not be the same without you. BASH is still absolutely foundational to all computing today. Happy Black History Month to an absolute icon!

Thank you Mr. Fox.
When I was in #BigCorporate I was the only one with /usr/bin/bash as my logon shell; everyone else was on stock /usr/bin/csh.

BREAKING: Elon Musk is reportedly furious people keep calling Tesla vehicles “swasticars.”

So don't do that.

in reply to David Penfold

There's a shitload of them in my 'hood so I see them all the time & literally cannot think of them as anything *other* than Swasticars.

Well, ain't that a kick in the nuts..? My RTL-SDR stopped working.

Hello, Mastodon family! It's been a long time coming, but Xubuntu has officially left X behind!

x.com/Xubuntu/status/188675427…

If you're still using X, consider sharing our update to spread awareness. We'll continue to bring you the best of #Xfce and #Linux... all in one place.

(edit: because everything is confusing and nothing makes sense... we're leaving X, formerly known as Twitter, not X11. Wayland is still very much in the future!)

that's actually a big part of why this episode really stood the test of time. If you show it to kids today, they love it. No one likes the ones that punched down (even Chuck Jones directed one obligatory racist short in the 40s).

Goodbye to support for the arts and culture... 😡

US president Donald Trump has done away with the President’s Committee on the Arts and the Humanities (PCAH), which advises the president on policy decisions and engagement with the philanthropic and private sectors. It also endeavours to boost support for the arts, humanities and museum and library services at the federal level.

@michaelrussell Not sure, but that's another issue as I remember it being a big deal with our last census.
