Social Security never in danger of bankruptcy
From LinkedIn
The social security administration “never had a data breach" in its 85 years of operation. TikToker lnkd.in/ev73WSJa , policy nerd Kathryn Anne Edwards, talks about the SSA for 53 minutes and somehow makes it interesting: lnkd.in/emueVBEN
As a young person (age 22) she wrote “A Young Person’s Guide to Social Security” and clearly has been obsessed with the topic since then.
Apparently the SSA was never in danger of bankruptcy. Even the 2035 milestone of having to reduce payments is 70% solvable if they remove the cap on payments for incomes over $170,000 (5% of the population). The cap was introduced in 1983 at the same time as 50-year planned change in payments rates to safeguard beyond 2035. The plan had two mistakes: one, adding that cap, and two, not predicting that wages would stagnate for people below the cap while skyrocketing for the people above the cap.
In other words it has nothing to do with the ageing population – that was predicted, priced and planned 50 years ago, with regular updates from the government’s actuaries.
She wrote her book back then because young people keep on being told social security will not last. This is not true and it is an amazing welfare program.

This Is Not a Drill: Trump’s Day-One Order Sets the Stage for Martial Law
This Is Not a Drill: Trump’s Day-One Order Sets the Stage for Martial Law
By Tony Pentimalli
On January 20, 2025, while the press focused on the optics of Donald Trump’s indoor inauguration, something far more dangerous was set in motion—off-camera, away from ceremony, and beneath the radar of a public lulled by spectacle.
Trump signed an executive order declaring a national emergency at the southern border. But the most alarming part? It gave the Department of Defense and the Department of Homeland Security just 90 days to deliver a joint report on whether he should invoke the Insurrection Act.
That deadline is April 20.
This wasn’t about immigration. It was about power.
The Insurrection Act, passed in 1807, gives the president the authority to deploy the U.S. military on American soil. That means troops in our cities. That means bypassing governors. That means suspending protest rights. That means the death of democratic dissent—under the false pretense of restoring “order.”
And Trump’s not hiding it. He’s preparing it.
We’ve seen this before. In June 2020, after the murder of George Floyd, millions of Americans rose up in protest. Trump didn’t respond with compassion—he called for “domination.” When the military hesitated to invoke the Insurrection Act, Trump sent federal forces to violently clear peaceful protesters from Lafayette Square so he could wave a Bible in front of a church. Not an ounce of remorse followed. He was angry the generals didn’t go far enough.
This time, he’s made sure they won’t hesitate.
Since returning to power, Trump has purged the Pentagon of independent thinkers. In their place? Loyalists. Pete Hegseth is now Secretary of Defense. Tulsi Gabbard runs intelligence. And J.D. Vance—Vice President—is openly on board with using military force against Americans on American soil.
Then, on March 19, those three—Vance, Gabbard, and Hegseth—staged a photo op at the southern border. Not a routine visit. Not a strategy session. A performance.
Think about it. Why would the Vice President, the head of military intelligence, and the Defense Secretary all need to go to the border together? Why make a media spectacle of it?
Because it wasn’t about the border. It was about the optics. It was about laying the emotional groundwork for invoking the Insurrection Act. They were building the narrative. “We had to act.” “We had no choice.” “The crisis was too big.”
And what comes next?
It’s June 2025. Trump goes on national TV and declares that Democratic cities are under siege by “radicals” and “illegals.” He signs the Insurrection Act order. Troops hit the streets of Atlanta, Chicago, Philadelphia. Protesters are arrested under “emergency provisions.” Journalists are detained. Social media accounts vanish. Immigrants are swept into detention centers. The press is told to stand down. The public is told to shut up.
And it’s all legal.
Some of you might think, “He’s bluffing. The military won’t go along. The courts will stop him.”
Really?
- Were they bluffing when federal agents brutalized peaceful protesters in Lafayette Square?
- Did the military refuse? No. The National Guard was deployed. Many in uniform carried out the order. It was only later that a few expressed regret—after the damage was done.
- Did the courts stop January 6? No. They prosecuted rioters after the fact, but the attack happened. Congress fled. Democracy was nearly strangled live on TV.
- Did they stop the family separation policy? No. Thousands of children were taken from their parents before courts intervened—long after the trauma was inflicted.
- Did they stop the Muslim ban? No. The Supreme Court upheld it. Entire families were stranded or banned simply because of where they came from.
- Did they stop ICE raids or CBP abuses? Rarely. A handful of rulings. A few headlines. But the system kept grinding, unchecked and cruel.
So if you’re waiting for “the system” to save us, you’re waiting for something that has already failed.
The April 20 report is coming. If it recommends using the Insurrection Act—and let’s be honest, it will—Trump will frame it as a reluctant but necessary move. He’ll say he tried everything else. He’ll claim it’s about protecting America.
But what he’s really protecting is his own authority.
This is how authoritarianism arrives: not with tanks, but with legal memos, press events, and a scared public hoping someone else will stop it.
So what do we do?
- We speak now. Loudly. Forcefully.
- Call your representatives and demand they investigate Trump’s January 20 order.
- Push the media to report on the Insurrection Act report before it’s too late.
- Demand public statements from military and intelligence leaders—now, not after.
- Organize. Educate. Resist.
- If you’ve never joined a protest before, this is the moment.
- If you’ve never spoken up politically, this is the time.
- If you’ve never thought it could happen here—it already is.
The threat isn’t coming.
It’s here.
And silence is exactly what Trump is counting on.

I wished the copyright on books would be shorter. Around 20 years seems to be right to me. You get 20 years to earn money with your book, and then it goes into the public domain.
Shouldn't they have made enough money from that one book for 20 years?

heartedly agree. On the other hand: The US has a lot of nuclear warheads. Saving by invasion like Germany 1945 is not an option.
Edit: The "saving" term was chosen because I have seen some US people writing "save us" on social media.
Let's face it, Europe (and other parts of the world). The USA is not our ally anymore. Trump and his robber barons have their own agenda (if they really have one, I can only see short-sighted action causing immense damage and chaos).
The earlier we accept this and act accordingly, the better for all of us.
This is my very personal opinion.

Agreed. Together we stand, divided we fall.
The issue is, of course, that the worm is already in the fruit, so to speak: people like Meloni, Orban, Le Pen, Fico and others (AfD...) will need to be brought down if Europe is to succeed. They took money from Putin and should be treated as compromised.
Le Pen, in particular, could end up in serious trouble soon as a French court could declare her ineligible.
Even though we have challenges in Europe as well, that should not be any reason to not work for a European unity. Not all EU countries will join, fine - they can join in later when it is appropriate for them.
Political parties contributing to division must and need to be held accountable and stopped. Through true and honest democratic processes. These battles can't be won through cheating and dishonesty, even though it might seem so in a shorter perspective.
It won't be easy. But Europe needs it. And Europe needs brave politicians who dare drive the politics into a new and courageous directions, to stop this alt-right-wing trend. With the help of the population, this is doable. But it won't be easy.
Sad but true.
When I finished school 20 years ago my thought was, whenever fascists rule Germany again, I can move to USA and be on the good side. History proves me wrong.

I have done this a few years ago and switched to another reader, buying my German Books at Reuffel.de as EPUB.
But Amazon says, you are not bying a book. You are buying a license to read it on a kindle.
Want to have some fun? Ask Amazon for your personal data. The amount of kindle data was unbelievable. (How many seconds you stay on each site of a book)
a book license. what next? if i wanted to borrow the book i’d go to the library where it’s free.
no we own what we paid for, or amazon can refund it for false representation
and that goes for disabling the usb feature I PAID FOR THAT, they can’t just turn it off
It is a legislative failure that DRM is allowed to strip you from these liberties, while all of us still continue to pay that fee, every time we buy some storage media. Also when included in a phone or e-book reader.
Another example: Using DRM for ink and toner cartridges for ink and laser printers.
The entire purpose of DRM is to lock customers in, to keep them tied to one company.

Pocketbooks are probably the most compatible with any format.
Do check the resolution, because this seems to be a bit lower than for the Kindle (and the page turning may be just a bit slower than you are used to).
It claims to be a tablet. If you think of it as a tablet, it is slow. As an e-reader fed epubs, it is quite fine.
I personally decided to go with an Onyx e-Reader. They're basically fullfleshed Android tablets, but with a e-Reader-like design and screen. I needed this mostly to deal with a bunch of different DRM reader apps, some of which are only available on Android/ios
This gives you maximum flexibility, but likely doesn't fulfill your price criteria I would assume
I believe the kindle will also read mobi formatted books, so if you convert your books to that format you can still use your kindle to read them (Amazon actually bought one of the original ebook formats - mobipocket - and that format is the format used to build its drm laden now in use).
My first ebook reader used the mobipocket format and I have read those books on my Kindle (circa 2015).
Thanks for the heads up about this change in policies.
I have always done this because I wanted to read without being restricted to certain software or devices. But I will also buy elsewhere from now on. Hopefully books I want are available elsewhere so I can give them my money.
I did my liberation and DRM removal a few years ago, and then I promptly removed my amazon account (which I hadn't used in a very long time anyway).
I read my ebooks on a Remarkable 2 now (which is great, will not be suitable for you, because it doesn't have a backlight).
it's dead to us. Given the way things are going, I just revisited my list of "books to read before I die."
But, unfortunately, Amazon won't let me. And I don't have a Windows or Kindle around to try to grab it.
Sigh. Moral of the story: Don't subscribe to or buy content from corporate monopolies.
Stupid Amazon.
I’ve got 559. I’m about 140 into it now. Loading up on my new Kobo Libra via Calibre.
I also just pulled and DRM stripped all my books out of Apple Books. Thankfully not nearly as many, because that’s a wild process.
Thanks for this hint – I didn't notice they will remove this option!
I'm using a Kindle, but without connecting it to my Amazon-Account, WiFi off. Put my books on it via calibre. So will need a new eBook-Seller, too. I'm just testing a Remarkable 2 an put some eBooks on it, but this device is too heavy to use it as an eBook reader 🙈
I’m about to do the same. Already downloaded and liberated all my ebooks, canceled kindle unlimited.
Next up is choosing a new E-Reader (Kobo / Tolino probably) and getting used to different shops for books.
As an academic I already use @zotero for all my pdfs, so I've moved my epubs there to. Unfortunately the zotero epub reader is only available on a computer, but since it also works in the browser I'm reading in the browser on my two booxes (eink with android and pen support). Kind of a work around at the moment but when epub support comes to the android app it will be great.
Thanks for the heads up on the removal of the feature, I'll have to check that all my books have been freed. (A problem as a European is that in not always able to buy certain ebooks from other stores than Amazon.)

And of course, I can understand your concerns.
For myself, I despite the power Amazon has over things.
I tried but I can't even download them.
I dont have much there, but I just want to get it before it's too late out of spite.
I have been looking. Didn't find anything.
I have considered other readers, but I could not yet find a marketplace as good as Amazon's, especially for buying new english eBooks from germany.
I'm very upset that I'm still stuck with amazon for the ebook gifting -- Apple lets me gift books, but I have to purchase them one at a time.
Can you copy the ebooks off the Kindle if it's attached to a computer?
bookshop.org just started selling ebooks! Purchasing through them helps your local bookstore. Unfortunately, they're not DRM-free, but certainly a better option than Amazon.

oh interesting, I guess I didn't realize that be only on the color displays had different speeds than when using color.
I appreciate you sharing your story and spreading awareness of amz ebook practices. I have been sideloading ebooks forever, and I'm glad more people are choosing that option.

How do I find the mastodon(?) feeds I'm following?
I'm completely new to Friendica and finding it horribly confusing. (No problems with Mastodon, PeerTube, etc. and a Linux user since 1994.) At some point, I subscribed? followed? suggestions that weren't Friendica but were Mastodon? (I think.) Now, I cannot find them or how to unfollow them.

They are in your contacts and unfollow button is there also.
It seems that anything you follow is a contact (e.g. an RSS feed or a Bluesky account).

Hmmm... I thought I'd started following some flipchart / flip-something thing, and it seems that a lot of the feed I see comes from such a source, but the contacts doesn't list the that as one of the feeds I'm subscribing to. So, maybe my beer- and age-addled brain is misremembering.
(Also, I see the heading "3 contacts" with four contacts listed under it. These are the kinds of things that gives one pause. 😉)
